Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework COMMUNICATION – Outcome 5: Children are effective communicators.

The children were confident to share their holiday adventures in front of the group and listen to others.

Lexi: I went to Kids Space with Ruby, Bella, Darcy, Bridget and Ava. They are our friends from child care. Me and Bridget and Bella went down a fast slide. First the blue part was really slow then it went really fast. We went down a bumpy slide.

Milan: I stayed at home. We played games.

Taj: I went to Cairns. There were little baby frogs. I went in a beach pool. We went scuba diving. It was on an island far away. We had to jump off the boat. We saw clam and sharks. And we saw Nemos’ and Dorys’. The clam had a big pearl in it!

William: On the school holidays I went to the cinema. I saw Ninja turtles with Mum and James. I got Maltesers. Mum and James ate popcorn. I like the red turtle the best – Raphael.

Aiden: I went to Kyral Castle. I saw knights fighting. The red one beat the blue one. Knights are people with helmets and they protect the kings and queens. Lots of people wanted to look for gold. The river was super long. I got some gold leaf from the shop. We stayed in a hotel for two nights. It was so cold in Ballarat. We had to wear our beanies, jacket, gloves, pants and even our jumper. We couldn’t wear a t-shirt because it was so cold.

Ruby: I went to Disney on Ice. There was Elsa and Anna and Rapunzel, and Belle. I went with Bella. My favourite part was when Belle didn’t see the teapot was talking.

Billie: I went to Jump Central and a climbing place with Harriet, Evie and Freddie. I went on the highest one ever. I went and saw ‘the Whale and the Snail’ with Gigi. The funniest thing was when they squirted out water at us.

Isobel: I only played with Claudia. I went to ‘Disney on Ice.’ I liked when Elsa did her magic and she made some fireworks.

After sharing their stories the children choose to recreate their holidays using a variety of different languages to express their ideas.

Liberté Egalité Fraternité On Thursday, Fabian came to share with the children about Bastille Day.

Fabian: Today is a very special day for the people of France. Does anyone know what day it is?

Ruby: Thursday.

Gigi: July.

Fabian: It’s called Bastille Day.

Fabian: Where does the story take place? What city is the Eiffel Tower in?

Felix: It’s the Eiffel Tower, it sends signals.

Fabian: This is the story of the 14 of July. Over 200 years ago in Paris there was a King and a Queen. The King and Queen lived in a castle. Versailles was the name of the castle. It had huge, beautiful gardens – the gardens were so gigantic it takes you hours to walk through them. BUT there was a problem! The King and the Queen had all the money, candles to keep them warm, lots of vegetables and beautiful things. All the other people in Paris had nothing. They were cold in their houses.

Is that fair?

Alexandra: They could get jobs to buy things.

Thomas: They could go to their houses and say it’s not fair.

Fabian: All the people in France wrote a letter to the King asking if the King and Queen would share their things. BUT the problem was the King and Queen did not want to share.

What do you think the people did?

Felix: Take over the castle.

Alexandra: Give the money to the people.

Fabian: They got together in the streets and they walked all the way to the castle. From Paris to Versailles is 30 kilometres.

What do you think happened when they arrived?

Gigi: They fighted the King.

Fabian: Who won?

Gigi: The people.

Fabian: The King and Queen escaped outside France BUT someone recognised them and they were caught.

What do you think might have happened to the King and Queen?

They went to jail. This is called the French Revolution. The most important thing for all the French, even us in Australia, are these three things.

Liberté Egalité Fraternité

On all the schools in France these words are above the entrance. It means, Liberty, Equality and Fraternity.

When the King and Queen went to jail new rules were made in France. There would be no more Kings and Queens because it’s not fair that someone has everything and everyone has to share, which is called the French Republic.

The French Revolution said we will write those 3 words everywhere – on school, libraries, town halls and even on the money.

Liberty means everyone is free.

Equality means no one is bigger and better that others – we are all equals.

Fraternity means brotherhood. We all care for each other.

To celebrate every year there are big fireworks the day of the French Revolution. Which marks when we changed the rules. We wrote a letter called the declaration of the citizen. Everyone can be happy, free and feel equal.

During our Creative Movement session with Mrs. Zachest, we used the story that Fabian told us about the history of Bastille Day and recreated the story through drama. The children role played being the greedy King and Queen and then used movement and mime to create the castle walls. They then transformed into the people from Paris and showed the contrast between the characters. The children in Moreton Bay were able to bring stories to life through drama and present their work confidently in front of their peers.

The story also had a strong influence of the children’s play in the outdoor environment. The children wanted to recreate the Versailles castle using the blocks and the sand, as well as role playing kings and queens.

LEARNING – Outcome 4: Children are confident and involved learners.

The children showed curiosity in the history of Bastille Day. They were enthusiastic participants in their learning and were able to transfer and share the knowledge they had learnt.
