In the film Hotel Rwanda, director Terry George portrays an accurate image of
the recent Rwanda Genocide of 1994. The film overall convey a strong message of up
standers and bystanders through the usage of lighting effects and explosion/violence.
Characters such as Paul Rosesabagina made the film more intense.
The lighting effects contributed to the suspense of the film that gave this film a
high rate of a four. In the beginning of the film, viewers are listening to a brief radio
broadcast over a pitch black scene that foreshadows a horrifying, dehumanizing message
that surfaces later in the film. Director Terry George utilized this dark scene to establish a
sense of tension and gave the audience an intense feeling throughout the film. Another
scene in which lighting effects intensified the film was when the whole city was in a
black-out. The black-out increased the fear of the Tutsi people as the Hutus took
advantage of the night and persecuted them to later kill them all. However, Paul along
with his wife risked their lives for several people who were not their family. The lighting
effects intensified the scene because Paul could have perished in the persecution of the
Hutus if they figure out that he was helping them.
Explosions and scenes of violence intensified the films plot. When Paul was
driving on his way back home to his family, an explosion was heard very close and loud
to his van. The explosive was so close and loud, for a second one could have thought that
the explosive hit Pauls van and died because he helped rescue Tutsis. A violent scene
that impacted the most was the scene when a bazooka shot hit the hotel as Paul was
caring for the Tutsis needs. The explosive was both loud and unexpected, which shocked
