Journalism Associate in Arts Degree An Option within Liberal Arts and Sciences
This program focuses on developing a student’s written communication skills alongside mastering modern storytelling techniques in new media and broadcasting. Students employ a variety of software programs and applications that are standard in the industry today. The Journalism emphasis allows students to specialize in particular beats including sports, crime, government, politics, entertainment and education.
Career OpportunitiesStudents in this program will be prepared for careers in print media, online media, new media, social media, advertising and public relations.

The Youngtown EditionWorking on the campus newspaper, “The Youngtown Edition,” is a requirement for journalism majors. Each year, the paper is entered into the New Jersey Press Association competition for college newspapers. In the past 10 years, “Youngtown” has received numerous awards at the collegiate

state level. The Columbia Scholastic Press Association also conducts a thorough yearly critique of the newspaper and has awarded it Gold and Silver Medalist rankings.
Internship OpportunitiesStudents in this program have internship opportunities with local print outlets and online media.
Scholarship OpportunitiesStudents who work on the campus newspaper are eligible for Campus Life monetary awards that are given each semester. In addition, the Edith P. Margetts Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to an outstanding member of the “Youngtown” staff.
FacultyProfessor John Soltes teaches all journalism production courses and is a freelance journalist for various print and online publications. He has a Master of Science in Journalism from Columbia University.
FacilitiesStudents work in a state-of-the-art, multi-purpose journalism classroom with access to the full Adobe suite.
Transfer AgreementsThis program allows students to transfer as a journalism or communication major to state universities in New Jersey, as well as to other public and private universities.
Students in the program have transferred to William Paterson University, Kean University, Ramapo College, Montclair State University, Rutgers University and Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey, as well as to Syracuse University, the University of Maryland, Penn State University, Emerson College and the University of Pennsylvania.
