Entry #1: Historical Influences - February 1, 2014

Punk Fashion has been brought back in

style, but in a different way. This includes

leather skirts, studs, spike collars and other

items having to do with fashion. Almost every-

thing in the past of punk has been brought

back to today's fashion scene. The last time

Punk was in was about the early 1980's. Punk fashion has been fused with high

end fashion and sort of makes a new look. The use of leather jackets, chains and

boots give a new glamorous look. It gives you the tough look without over doing

it. Elements are fused which give you a new look that will have people looking.

Punk in the past focused more on showing you were a bad ass and didn't

care for much unlike how they use it today. Today it expresses style.

A company from Japan Called Kose' Corp. plans to buy 93.5

percent stake of New York- based Tarte' cosmetics. The

cost will approxiamately 135 million dollars. By buying out

most of Tarte' this should put Kose' Corp directly in the U.S. market. Tarte' is consider- ed one of the fastest-growing cosmetics companies in the U.S. The founder of Tarte' believes that by joining together they can build on to what has already been accomplished and target new markets. Kose'

ranked 21 on last years WWD Beauty Inc top 100 list. I think tthat this will be a good

partnership, or business opportunity for both Tarte' and Kose Corp. to grow and

expand to other parts of the world better.

Japan's Kosé to Acquire Tarte Cosmetics

By Amanda Kaiser with contributions from Belisa Silva

TOKYO — Japan’s Kosé Corp. said Monday it is buying a 93.5 percent stake in New York-based Tarte Cosmetics for $135 million, giving the Japanese company a foothold in the U.S. market.

Kosé is buying out Encore Consumer Capital’s entire stake in the American beauty firm, a mainstay on QVC, as well as most of Tarte founder Maureen Kelly’s shares. Kosé said Tarte’s existing management will remain in place. Encore Consumer Capital is a San Francisco-based private equity investment firm focused on the consumer products industry.

Tarte is described as one of the fastest-growing cosmetics companies in the U.S., logging growth approaching 30 percent annually, according to sources. The company finished 2013 with revenues of $68 million. Last year, Intrepid Investment Bankers LLC’s Beauty Care M&A Report singled out Tarte as one of the industry’s takeover targets.

Kelly, who founded her brand 15 years ago in her bedroom, said that “by joining the Kosé family and adding to that rich portfolio, we can build on what we’ve already accomplished with powerful products targeted at new markets.”

Described as “eco-chic,” Tarte is infused with ingredients such as superfruits, plant extracts, vitamins, minerals and other naturally derived ingredients. In 2010, the company received a boost through an investment from Encore Consumer Capital, and since then, according to the brand, “Tarte has significantly expanded its footprint throughout North America open-sell environments and specialty distribution channels with market-leading retailers such as Sephora, Sephora Inside JCPenney, Ulta, QVC and Macy’s Impulse.” In addition, Tarte has also grown its international presence with Sephora in Southeast Asia and QVC U.K.

Considerably smaller than Shiseido and Kao, Kosé is a distant number three in terms of Japan’s biggest beauty companies. It ranked 21 on last year’s WWD Beauty Inc Top 100 while Shiseido came in at spot number five and Kao ranked number seven.

Kosé does the bulk of its business in Japan but it entered the Chinese market about 24 years ago and it has a small presence elsewhere in Asia. The company’s portfolio of brands includes Cosme Decorte, Awake, Sekkisei as well as licensing agreements for Jill Stuart and Paul Stuart.

Kosé’s net profit for the nine months ending Dec. 31 rose 76 percent to 8.74 billion yen, or $88.27 million at average exchange for the period. Operating profit grew 55.7 percent to 13.67 billion yen, or $138.1 million, while sales grew 7.8 percent to 137.29 billion yen, or $1.39 billion. International sales accounted for only 12 percent of the company ’s turnover.

Kazutoshi Kobayashi is president of the family-run company that his grandfather founded in 1946. In 2010, he told WWD Kosé was interested in making acquisitions but hadn’t found a suitable target.

Paris-based Ohana & Co. advised Kosé on the deal.

Entry #3: Report on Oscars” Red Carpet - March 18, 2014There were a couple of common trends during the 2014 Oscars. One of the trends were nudes and nuetrals that stars like Cate Blanchett and Kate Hudson wore. Simple colors and seethrough fabrics.

In my opinion I think that Lady Gaga was "best dressed." She had on a figure-huffing strapless mermaid cut Versace gown that was metallic with pink accents, along with a shawl hitting two trends that night. I feel that she just looks absolutely gorgeous in this dress and it just fits her body so perfectly. Also this dress seems to capture my eyes more than any other dress. Nobody looked better on the Red Carpet in a dress than she did.

When I seen her she stood out to me. She looked as if she was a famous or important person. The way she dressed made it seem that way, because

I could see someone famous wearing this. The way she walked also helped me choose her. Her style just appealed to me and I liked the way she

put her outfit together.

I could see this being worn overseas somewhere. I think this is a nice combination, and I would

not mind anyone I knew in this.

P.S.

It looked better in person.

Varsity Ripped Biker Luxe Jeans Jeans• I feel this will be a trend

because it is unique, and a lot of women are more interested in big attention getting upper wear. Along with the see through fabric. I would even wear these items. I think they will do great when they release. Asian designed clothing are used as ideas on how to dress and Varsity type clothing is in right now

People are still wearing ripped, distressed, and destroyed jeans as of right now. They can go with a lot and depending on the amount and type of rips they can give you a certain look. Another trends is seeing this in shorts. You can wear these jeans in the summer and not be hot, especially with all the access of air to get in and out. And these jeans can be for men and women. I even wear ripped jeans

I think that biker jeans will be coming in more as trend because other clothing lines that are cheaper are making thm now. The weird way they look and how they turn makes you want to get a pair or try them on. At first Balmain was making them and they were high. I think this will increase the amount of biker jeans we start seeing

Patch work or recyclingPleats in furniture

Color trends and designs

They get some of their inspiration from seeing fashion and apply it to furniture, but just slightly in a different way. Sometimes certain parts of clothing can play a factor such as pleating. Pleating is seen in a lot of clothing and it is also applied to furniture and furnishings.

• I think these trends exist for one because they are good ideas to use in furniture, and the same rules seem to apply to each other.

• Other times people tend to do this to emphasize, whether t be the clothes or the furniture
