(NOTE : During my research on the life of Sri mail A.dya Sankardcilrya for the Ph.D. degree of the Poona University, I was able io collect much new information_on the subject. It is proposed to place this information before scholars and the public interested in the subject for their opinion and further research.)

SRI SANKA.RAC.ARY A has been a very great figure indeed in Iridian history. It was quite natural that many persons were

inspired to write accounts of his life and life-work. Mr. T. N. Narayal).a .Sastri in his 'Age of Sailkara' refers to ten such biographical accounts, written in Sanskrit.1 Out of these, the first two, viz.,(i)B:rhat-Sailkara Vijaya by Cit&ukha and (ii) Pracina-.Sankara Vijaya by !nandagiri afs Anandajiiana did not become available to me even after an intensive search for them .throughout India. · We, however, .get references to and

only eight, the first two still remaining untraced. In addition to these eight, I. was able to procure the following biographies of Saiikara.

(i) Salikarii.ca.ryamahima bY. Balagopalayati. . (ii) Saiikara Vijaya or Brhat ~aiikara Vijaya by Brahmii.nanda Sarasvati.

(iii) .Acaryavijayacampu by Parame&:vam Kavi Ka~t;birava. (iv) Saiikara Vijaya Siuilgraha by Puru~ottama Bba.rati. -(v) Salikarabhyudaya by '!'irumala Dixit.

(vi) GuruvarilBa-Ka.vya by Kasi Laxman Siiri. (vii) Saiikaramandii.raSaurabba by Nilaka\lt;ha.

quotations from both these works, about the genuineness and the very existence o.f which scholars ru:e extremely sceptical. I, . therefore, intend to record my findings in regard to these two works.

(i) Br. S. V. of Cit.

We read about this work from the following sources:

(a) Mr. T •. l{r~Qamiciri mentions this work as a biography of Sankara3 and following him, the editor of Vyisacala's Sankara-Vijaya, refers to it as '!he 9th biography of Sail~a. 3 . . . '

(b) Prof. Baldev Upadhyaya refers in two places' to a manuscript of this work ~d ascribes it to S~vajfia Citsukha. · .

(c) The editor o'f Citsukhi, published by U dtsina Sanskrt Vidyilaya, Kasi says clearly that ' Citsukha has also written one biography of Sankara and portions thereof are available here and there.' • ,

My efforts to trace these references further, by contacting the last three persons personally and by correspondance failed to yield any fruitful results·.

(d) Sufi!ania, a commentary on Guru-ratna-Malika, alist of Gurus of Kanci-Kamako~i Pitha, distinctly refers.,. to and quotes from Br. S.V. of Citsukha, who is described as "Sri Sarvajiia Citsukhicarya who served the acarya every minute, was witness to the entire happening (of Sailkara's life) and associated with him without break throughout his life."& Recently, I have been reliably informed thatthe Mutt's library contains even today a manuscript~copy ofthe Br. S.V. by Citsukha.

(e) The best evidence is supplied by :Mr. T. S. N. Sastri who tells us that this Br. S.V. consisted a1 three parts (i)' p,firvacarya-Satpatha, (ii) Sankaracarya Satpatha and (iii) Suresvaracarya Satpatha, out of

which he was able to procure a mutiliated MS. copy of the second part only. 7 . Mr. Sastri worked on this copy and has given in his incomplete book, an account 6f Sankara's life, upto his meeting with Kumarila Bhatta, according to the version of Citsukha, and while doing so, he has given quotatio:r;ts from the original work in m!tny places. He gives th~ follo;wing ·information about Citsukha, as culled by him from, the said work.

In the Upoddhita prakaral)a oj his Br. S.V., Citsukha states that he was a native of Gokarl)a in the Kerala state. He canie in contact with Sailkara when the latter was a boy of five years only, read~g in a Gurukula. · Thereafter, when Sailkara started in search of a Guru

' ' Citsukha joined him on the way at Gokarna and followed him clos~ly without break till Sankara laid down his body at Kal'lci; in the t~mple of Kamaksi. · Citsukha was senior to Sankara by five years and was thus an eye-witness to his life and doings almost' from the beginning to the end.

Citsukha's original name was Vifi!J;lUsarman while Citsukha was the name given to him by Sankara himself, when at the former's request, he initiated him into the order of Sannyasins and made him· his. first disciple. Citsukha ·has described this incident after narrating the story of Sankaia's initiation at the hands of Lord Siva Himself, manifested as Dakfi!il}.amiirti, ori one,of the peaks of mount Kailasa in the Himalayas.

This same Citsukha: is said to have ascended later on, the Dvaraka­Pitha as the 2nd a,carya and a successor o.f Sri Brahmasvariipacarya an,d passed away 24 years thereafter-, at the ripe old age of 80 years.

Citsukha•s "\\·ork is also called Guru-Vijaya because of its very great bulk and gives the various works, major as well as minor-including the devotional hymns written by Sankara, with their occasion, time and place. The smaller works like hymns are given in full while the longer ones have only been referred to.

• It is _important to note that the information about Citsti:khi,

given by Mr~ Sastri corroborates the one given in Sufi!ama, referr~d to already, although the latter is not so exhaustive. It is· also ~ortli noting that Citsukha's version of Sailkara•s life as given by Mr. Sastri, which differs from the versions of the same in all the.other biographies in

· Sanskrit, eminently agrees with the one as culled from the quotations from Br. S.V. in Sufi!ama. The quotations in the latter, 'however, are

few and far between and a~~ not sufficient for a regular rec~>nstruction of S~:~oilk8.ra~s life-accowit aloug altogether fresh lines~ a.S found in the work . o1 ~· S~tri. ·This obviates a possible obj~ction tJ::tat Mr. Sistri has orily b~ed his version pn the quotations contained. in the Sur~ama., :w~ch has to .. be placed at least 200 years Rl'ior to the work of~· Sastri (19i6 A.D.) ..

. An interesting piece of information in this connection is supplied )>y the .works of Cidvila.sa and Sadinanda ($a~a-Vijaya-Vila.sa and 'Sail~a-Digvijaya-Sii.ra). Sadinanda lW stated at the very com-· m~cement of his work that he. had- before hiln an atmet~tli'ii<f~Nilf .which he was trying. to sUIIliiiarise for purification of his mind, while Cidvila.sa tells us that he was narratmg .what was 'transmitted. to him by his Guru. Mr. Sastri, who had with him these t~o works also, says that these two biographers have followed Citsuklia.'s work, more or less, though I have found that Sadii.nanda deviates from Citsukha more than otherwise.

Now, while describing Sankara's encounter with Kumii.rila, Mr. Sii.stri has quoted a whole passage of'29 stanzas as from Br. S.V. o'f Citsukha, in which (passage) Kum&rila is said to give an account of his own previous life: to SailkaJ:a. Sadinanda and Cidvilasa repeat, in the same. context, many 9f these stanzas almost verbatim, of col.!rse omitting many and making small but very important changes in those .they hav:e adopted. The most important· alteration is that the Jainas. . . and V ardha.mina Mahivira in Citsukha's version- have .been replaced· in both by Bauddhas and a Bauddha GU1"1h8 _Th~ correspondence, however, between Citsukha and Cidvilasa and Citsukha· and Sadinanda is too obvious· to be overlooked . and leads us tO infer not only that such a work aS· Br .. S.V.- must 'have existed but also that it was the same as the orie p~ssessed by :Mr. Sa.stri and the one which these two writers· had before them.·

From the foregoing evidence, it seems fairly well certain that Br. S.V. was not only a genuinely existiiig biography of Sa..ilkara~ and not a mere name, but also that the version of Sailkara's life given by .Mr. Sii.stri as from the same has at least sufficient prima facie claim to_ our attention as one based on the same.

The second wo~k to· be considered is Pr. S. Jaya of Anandajiiana · .afs Anandagiri.

At the very outset, we have to rem~mber that .this ~Jliff~ent ~rom another _work called Sailkara Vijaya by Anantinandagiri .(the a~t_ho~~~ . name sometimes being given wrongly as A.nand~iri) ~~ pr~~c;l in· 1886 in the· Bibliotheca Indica Series. I have p_roved thi~ )oin_t ~t some length in my thesis and also that :most possibly, this second work is grel..tly based on the former. The following pieces· of emdence .tend to prove the existence of this Pr. S.V. till recently. . :_ . .

_ (i.) Mr. ·T. S. N. Sastri seems to have had. this work ·with ~,' though he di>es not expressly say so; He quotes ,from it a few starizas;­Su!i!am& quotes from this work profusely.; By curious coincidence,­both Mr. Sii.stri and Su!i!amii. quote as from this same work, an i~entical stanza, I! relating to the d~rivatiori of ' Govindamuni ', Sailkara's GurU.!.

(2) Mii.dhava (popularly but wrongly known as Vidyarai')yli) expressly refers to the work Pr. S.V. by. name in the very first stanza10

of his work, which he says is going to be ail epitome of the same. In the absence of the original work, it is not possible to say how· far he has kept to this· object but one circumstance,, though min~r, is worth noting. While describing the creation of a hot water lake by Sankara for his Guru Govindamuni, for daily bath in the cold Himalayan regions, Mr. Sii.stri quotes as from Pr. S.V. of Ananda tWo stmi.zasi1.iil that connection. Mii.dhava repeats both these stanzas.- in·.' the ~f!me connection, as Ch. XVI: 101 and 102 but substitutes the word fit16lf~'l

. (i)- While· commenting on the first stanza quoted already· from Madhava's· work, · Acyutaraya. has clearly identified Pr. S. Jaya as Pr. ·S. Vijaya, written by Anandajnana afs Anandagiri, the disciple of Suddhananda and the writer of commentaries on Sailkara's Bha~yas.12

(ii) While.col.lliilenting upon XV: 3 of Madhava's work, Acyut­araya says that th~ amplified ·version· of the story (etat-prapancah) should be seen in· the work of Anan(!ajfiana_ afs Anandagiri the disciple · of Su(!dhananda, ,~hich.i~ the })asis of the present work (of Madhava).13

Afi;er this remark, Acyutara~.actually quotes as from tl!.e -same Pr. s.v., 58 stanzas, whichcanf!Otbe traced to any of the existing Saftkara­Vijayas (about 15 in number) including the printed one by Anantananda: giri. . It is precisely for this reason as alSo for some. others, 14 that even though in two other places, the same commentator Acyutaraya ·seems to identify the two works P1·. S~ V. and S.V. of Anandagiri and Anat­ii.nanda-giri respectively, the idntification has to be ruled out as erron­eous and the two works have to be kept distinct with two distinct authors.

(iii) While commenting upon XVI: 108 of Madhava's work, Acyutaraya quotes from Sivarahasya and once more refers to--the work of .Anandajiiana afs .Anandagiri.16 . _ . ·

(iv) While commenting on other stanzas .of Madhva's work, Acyutaraya names the author or the work or both thus :

(a) At I: 3, he explains, the 'previous poet' as '·the author of Sailkara-Vijaya already defined.'1& · ·

All these details seem to show beyo~d doubt not only that -a work called Pr. S.V. by .Anandajiiii.Ila afs Anandagiri· existed but also' that it was before A.cyiit&.raya m. 1830 A.D: and that .he used it for his c.oin~ m~ntary on -~adha,va's work.. Dhanapatisiiri, an earlier commentator of Madha\)'a's work confirms this finding re : Pr. S.V. as follows : . • · .

Madl!.av~, as ~e have-seen, is ~ummarising the_Pr. S.V. Ch.:xv ~f Madhava's work deals with· Sankara's. triumphant tour. ~han~pa~­suri quotes ·58 ·stanzas, 402 stanzas and 851. stanzas res~ectively m his commentary on st. 2, st. 4 and stt. 28/2!J of this chapter, with the common introductory remark 31ij'~+t"iEiiql( and ends ~he qu~tations with the remarks .tteffifi ~ G:~4fcr (st. 2), er~~ ~ ~~ry (st. 4) and ~~ m~s~ 4fd<t.P~_fd. (st. 29). From this,_'It seems that according to Dhanapatlsurm, the stanzas quoted were the relevant portions o~'Pr. S.V. intended to be summarised :by ~adhava in those particular stanzas. We, ho":'ever, are not left to surmise only. The first ,?8 stanzas, quoted by Dhanapatisiiri, are. the same ~ the 5,8 stanzas quoted by Acyutaraya in his commentary on XV: 8 of:Madha~~ ~. work and Acyutaraya, as se~ a¥ea9-y, has ascribed all of them~ !nand­ajiiana -afs .Anandagiri; This shows that all. 811 stanzas ~d not merely 58 quoted by Dhanapatisiiri must have be~~- taken by hnn, fr~~ one and the same work viz. Pr. S.V. by Anii.IldaJnana afs. Anandagtti~. Not even one of these 800 a~<! odd stanzas_ is to b~ found in ail~ of t~e existi.D.g Sankara Vijayas nor do they form part of Sankara-VIJaya of Anantanandagiri in. particular~ · · · ·· · · ·

The conclusion, theref~re, seems quite clear· that both the, co~m~F-~·· t~rs ofMadhava's work had bef?re them and have utilised, mor~ o~ ll;ls~, the work called Pr. I}..
