Modeler / Draftsman JG Johnson Architects - 2011-2013

As a member of the Union Station Alliance, JG Johnson Architects won the opportunity to restore Denver’s historic train station into a LEED Gold multi-modal transit hub and boutique hotel, reconfiguring the interior of the entire building.

I was involved in the graphic design of the original competition materials, built the 3D models used in marketing renderings, and helped develop DD and CD packages.,

Oceanside Springhill SuitesStylin’ by the Surf

Two blocks from the pier in Oceanside, CA, this new build full-service hotel is a key element in the city’s urban redevelopment plan. It is designed as LEED Silver and redefines Springhill Suites brand standards.

I built and managed the original Revit model for this project and was heavily involved in all stages of modeling, drafting, and design.

Lead Designer JG Johnson Architects - 2011-2013

JG Johnson possessed a laser cutter but did not have employees who knew how to use it. I was hired as the manager of the firm model shop. I replaced their computer protocols, created office standards, conducted materials research and did purchasing, and took charge of machine repair and maintenance.

Our models included large-scale topographic maps, site plans, mixed-use, multifamily, and hospitality complexes, city massing models, concept studies, and rapid concept prototyping.

Modeler / Draftsman JG Johnson Architects - 2011-2013

This 310-unit apartment building spans a full city block and is currently under construction in the trendy LoDo district of Denver.

In addition to working on construction documents for this project, I laser cut and constructed two physical models of the full site.: a basswood model for our office, and a colored matte board model as a marketing tool for the developer.

Working closely with the local historical society, city government, and building owners, we evaluated historical structures, created phased restoration plans, and produced a comprehensive report on the downtown district for its application to the National Historical Register

International Expositions explicate representational methods and political goals. They foreground cultural aspirations while distracting from and concealing subversive sources of power. As spectacular urban interventions, they showcase important cities and reshape their infrastructure to reflect cultural ideals. They provoke nationalist competition and architectural power politics.

Politics of Projection explores hypothetical Expositions, utilizing affective strategies to make explicit all the aspirations and deceptions of the host state, contributing nations, and associated organizations.

Expo Master Plan, at left

Formalizing a dream, the Belize City Expo is an urban intervention that the impoverished country would never be able to implement on its own. Involving the reclamation of swampland west of the city, the construction of new sea walls, and the addition of a grand Baroque concourse, the Expo would provide a new image of power and confidence to the government while upgrading the urban infrastructure.

Page 17: Joshua Smith Online Portfolio

The Central Plaza focuses on the theme of the Sun and is based upon traditional Mayan temple design. The pyramid’s iconic Solar Beacon funnels light into interior presentation spaces, while solar panels cover the broad roofs of its flanking exhibition halls. While still grounded in local culture, these elements are designed to create a vision of progressive and scientifically oriented development for the country.

Site plan of World Expo in downtown Tripoli

The Tripoli Expo is a forum to discuss government structures. Centered on the Court of Unity, the concourse is anchored on the south by the Court of Authority, shown at left, representing the strength, singularity, and tradition of existing forms of government.

Occupying the site of Tripoli’s existing Green Square, the north anchor of the concourse is the Court of Voices, shown at right. This gathering space is a center of commerce, prayer, ora-tory, dialogue, disagreement, and, if necessary, protest.

Working from unmeasured drawings, the goal of this project was to reconstruct a Renaissance church utilizing only its proportions. This partial model of Bramante’s St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome was modeled from the interior out, with all details derived from a single proportional system.

Harris Studio University of Michigan - 2005

This elementary school highlighted the natural biodiversity of a sprawling riverside park, tracing the intersection of upland forest and lowland alluvial biomes. The gym and main entrance are visible from the street while the academic spaces are sunk into the ground, minimally disrupting the ecosystem and allowing the existing forest to extend over the structure as an occupiable landscape.
