The objective of this studio was to develop a prototype for a given program [medical clinic] that could be used in developing countries. Factors that were to be incorporated into the design of this prototype were: use of available construction materials, natural daylighting, natural ventilation, and availability for future growth. Each given site had an existing building [church] located on it.

Time frame 14 weeksType Medical ClinicInstructor Prof Jae ChaLocation Urubo, BoliviaSetting Rural Local population 10,000

The village of Urubo is located directly across the Pirai River from the city of Santa Cruz. The surrounding region outside of Santa Cruz is very poor, thus lacking proper infrastructure and services for its residents. The immediate site is located directly adjacent to a church and off of a heavily traveled road.

The concept of growth as pertaining to this project is partly taken from the urban growth of the nearby city of Santa Cruz. Just as Santa Cruz has grown outward from within, the clinic will grow outward from the church. The clinic will grow on the successes of the church that have already impacted the community. The following Bible verses were used as inspiration:

The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and through all of its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ.1 Corinthians 12:12

Also a magnitude gathered from the surrounding cities to Jerusalem, bringing sick people and those who were tormented by unclean spirits, and they were all healed.Acts 5:16

Worship the LORD your God, and His blessing will be on your food and water. I will take away sickness from among you.Exodus 23:25

The driving concept of this project was “strength of many” More precisely, I was interested in constructing an object that was heavy in nature [wood] to be supported by something weak in nature [accrylic]. While one strand of accrylic could not bear the weight of the table, many strands together could support the weight.

Given the continued rise in the use of public transportation in American cities, the need for enhanced connections between modes of transit is needed. This is especially true in Chicago where the current rail systems [CTA L - metro rail and Metra - suburban commuter rail] are aligned in a “spoked system.” Because of this, transit users are required to ride to the city center [the loop] in order to transfer to other areas of the city. This project aims to act as a transit connector between several modes of transit: Metra UPN Line [Kenosha - Chicago], CTA Brown Line[north side neighborhoods - Chicago Loop], and the Future CTA Ashland BRT [north-south rapid bus route on Ashland Ave] while also creating a public space in the unused area underneath the elevated CTA L tracks.

Time frame 12 weeksType Multi-useInstructor Prof Ian HoffmanLocation Chicago, ILSetting Urban Local population 2,695,598

The transit connector is located underneath and along a portion of the CTA Brown Line from N Ravenswood Ave to Ashland Ave and continuing on as another portion designed by a fellow student. The main vehicular thoroughfare is Lincoln Ave, which runs in a diagonal direction creating a six - way intersection with W Roscoe St and N Paulina St. While the Lincoln Ave corridor is made up of mostly 3+ story multi-use buildings, the surrounding area is mostly single family residential homes.

The design strategies applied in the transit connector were done so to allow for the space to become more than a connector from point a to point b. Street level access points and a cafe were put into the program to encourage use outside of transit use. The walkways under the elevated tracks are wrapped in a shell to both shield sound and debris from above trains while also creating a unique spatial feature.

Portions of the town center of Monroe, Wisconsin were selected as areas for development. Having a population of approximately 10,000 residents, Monroe’s town center is focused around a large courthouse square which sits in the direct center of town. The ultimate goal of this project was to build upon the elements that have allowed the town center of Monroe to be successful. These include: walkability, use of public space in the courthouse square, locality of retail, commercial, and public services within the square, and available housing in close proximity to the square.

Time frame 5 weeksType Urban PlanningInstructor Dr Christopher MillerLocation Monroe, WISetting Rural Local Population 10,000

For my focus, the area in and around Spring Square was chosen. Located at the corner of 16th Ave and 12th St, the actual square is currently used as a parking lot. The square sits across the street from an empty and mostly unused lot to the west and a popular local eatery to the south.

A masterplan was developed which included changes that would occur within 3 months, 2-5 years, 10 years, 25 years, and 50 years. The major changes and developments include a multi-use building to house a grocery store, a row of retail / commercial space lining 16th Ave, rowhouses along 13th St to the south, an outdoor beer garden addition to the local eatery, and a parking garage.

The work for this project involved creating a three dimensional BIM model of a proposed residential project. The result of the BIM model was a full set of construction drawings that included a site plan, floor plans, elevations, sections, and mechanical and electrical drawings as well as construction notes and specifications. During the process of work there was constant communication and collaboration with the owner / architect.

As unused land is becoming increasingly more difficult to find in urban areas, structures that span and share space with forms of infrastructure including highway and train lines will become more common. This project in particular utilizes space that is constructed over an IDOT highway and CTA rail line.

Time frame 12 weeksType Multi-useSize [with parking] 200,000 ft2

Instructor Prof Sean GallagherLocation Chicago, ILSetting Urban Local population 2,695,598

The site selected lies about one mile from the Chicago Loop on the Eisenhower Expressway [I-290]. There is easy access to the highway via Van Buren St, and Congress Parkway as well as access to the CTA Blue Line Racine Stop via Loomis Street and CTA Bus lines. The site lies near the UIC campus to the east and the medical district to the west.

There are two main points of entry for the building. Entry from the parking garage levels is located on the east side of both parking levels, while pedestrian, CTA, and drop-off entry is located off of Loomis Street. There is also a streetfront entry for the retail component located off of Loomis Street.

With the ever growing cost of operating and maintaining a building, the problem was presented to design a worship facility to be located in the greater Chicago metropolitan area that could be utilized by both the Christian and Jewish faiths. The facility would be designed in a series of two phases. Phase one would be centered around the worship experience while phase two would be centered around a community aspect.

Time frame 8 weeksType Religious/communitySize 50,000 ft2

Instructor Prof Thomas JaegerLocation Evanston, ILSetting Urban Local population 74,486

After a detailed study of the greater Chicago area, the conclusion was made to use the northern suburb of Evanston as the location for the proposed building. Evanston was chosen based on its high number of transit options including the CTA Purple Line, the Metra Union Pacific North Line, the CTA Bus System, and numerous bike and pedestrian routes. The site was also selected for its racial diversity which was perceived to be a possible advantage for a multi-faith facility.

The main entry for the building was designed to be very open and welcoming to the community. This was done through the use of a large glass entryway and took advantage of its location on a prominent street corner. Upon entering, one was met with a sequence of spaces located off of a large atrium space. These sequence of spaces were meant to signify the important aspects of the building that included a sanctuary for worship, an outdoor courtyard for self reflection, and a gymnasium for community growth. Altogether, the facility strives to help strengthen the community.

Situated in the densely populated suburb of Chicago, the proposed public market would serve as a nice addition to the Oak Park community and would include space for an interior and exterior market as well as a community gathering and banquet space.

Time frame 8 weeksType Urban marketSize 30,000 ft2

Instructor Prof Ian HoffmanLocation Oak Park, ILSetting Urban Local population 51,878

The site for the proposed market is situated along Lake St. just west of Oak Park Ave. It is bordered on both sides by residential buildings while the public library and a small park are located across the street. With the location set in such a highly pedestrian used area, the thought was that the market could be used as a connector between the park and the other pedestrian areas.

The curved nature of the market was designed for the purpose of creating a connection to an ally located in the southeast corner of the building. This ally is a connector to many shops and other forms of retail while also connecting to a main thoroughfare and rail transit. The main structure of the market as well as the banquet room was designed to appear as if they were protruding out into the park. This was done in order to establish a stronger connection with the adjacent park.

Located just south of the heart of downtown Crystal Lake, IL and employing a large number of blind and non-sighted individuals, Horizons for the Blind was designed to house the offices and production spaces needed for the company that specializes in the printing of service bills and other such documents in braille form. Along with the production and administration needs, there also existed a vision to create a community-oriented aspect that would bring awareness to the work and vision of Horizons for the Blind.

Time frame 8 weeksType Office/communitySize 21,000 ft2

Instructor Prof Sean GallagherLocation Crystal Lake, ILSetting Suburban Local population 42,142

The site holds a very prominent location in downtown Crystal Lake. Because it sits on the major intersection of Crystal Lake Avenue and Williams Street, it is seen by numerous amounts of traffic every day. The site is also accessible by a Metra line and the Pace Bus service.

A large, multi-level atrium was designed in order to create an open space that could act as both an entrance/reception area as well as a buffer between the public and private spaces of the building. This element created a two-winged approach that held a majority of the production and administration functions to one wing of the building and the community spaces to the other. This was done to help with the circulation of the facility as well as to allow for minimal disturbance for employees while still having the capacity to allow members of the community to use the designated spaces.
