1 Joshua Comaroff I am an architecturally trained designer, who comes to Singapore via the United States and Britain. During the last 14 years, I have been living in Singapore-- researching topics in Asian urban life, while exploring design ideas in building and landscape. My research areas have grown spontaneously from my interaction with this city and its equatorial, highly anthopogenic environment--perhaps the world’s singular example of a mix between tropical energies and human intention. Likewise, the city presents an unusual relationship between governance and design, in which state regulations cover the national landscape to a degree of detail not commonly found elsewhere. Against this backdrop, I work with my firm Lekker Architects to explore the typologies, materiality and programming of architecture suitable to such a unique environnment. Our method works through urban phenomena, to look for innovations that might lead to a language of “Singaporean-ness.” Such a language might combine climatic solutions with questions of history, materiality, and new social forms arising from necessity or by design. This investigation concerns public as well as private buildings, homes and retail spaces. In particular, we have worked in the field of early learning, creating spaces for children and families--as well as exhibitions and facilities for the arts.

I am an architecturally trained designer, who comes to Singapore via the United States and Britain. During the last 14 years, I have been living in Singapore--researching topics in Asian urban life, while exploring design ideas in building and landscape.

Due to training in both architecture and landscape, I remain interested in the overlap of the built and the natural. The interplay of these is a major area of exploration in my work.

With my firm, I continue to be interested in the exploration of domestic spaces and programs, particularly in the SIngapore context.

We have completed a range of experimental house projects, which study complex interiors and the relationship to nature.

I remain interested in the design of public places, from seating to landscape and commercial spaces. This has been manifested in a series of projects in Singapore, each with a high degree of public engagement.
