Young Mike Zerwer Karen Zoufal WELCOME President Terry Ruiter called the meeting to order at 9:32 a.m., followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and welcome to everyone in attendance. APPROVAL OF MINUTES The minutes of the July 5, 2016, minutes were formally accepted. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Terry Ruiter Mini College is coming up this next weekend. People can still sign up and there are still scholarships available. Several courses we initiated are being offered. There will be a tour of member gardens on September 18. People should sign up to participate. There is also going to be a wine tasting tour in September. Nominations closed on July 15. The committee has been calling people and will be finalizing the roster and then send out the ballots. MASTER GARDENER COOORDINATOR – Karen Pleasant Saturday/Evening Classes. The soil testing class has been changed to September 15. Otherwise, the rest of the schedule is correct. Next year’s Master Gardener classes will run from January 19 to April 6 – 12 weeks, all on Thursday. There may be occasional field trips on the regular class days.

OLDBUSINESS• DemonstrationGarden.DianeWickstromandJodyLaChancepresentedsomeideasfora

demonstrationgardenoutsideoftheExtensionAuditorium.SeeExhibitA.Basicallyitwouldbeinthespacebetweenthebuildingandtheparkinglot(approximately17feetdeep)andwouldhaveplantersofvariousmaterialsshowingdifferenttypegardens.Treesincontainerscouldprovidesomeshade.

Adiscussionfollowed,andsomepertinentcommentswere:

– iftheasphaltisremoved,itwillbealoteasiertodothewateringsystems.ThisissomethingJohnPuncheswillhavetodiscusswiththeCountylaterthismonth.

– Sincewearelookingatawheelchairaccessiblegarden,wehavetohave48”wideaislesandasuitablegroundsurface.

– Thereisahosebibononesideonly,butifwehadapergolaovertheentryway,wecouldrunlinesoverit.Wecouldpossiblyalsorunlinesoverthebuildingentrance.

– Wecouldshowavarietyofplanters:bench-type,horsetrough,cauldron,clawtubbathtubs,winebarrels,etc.aswellasmodifyingtheexistingblockplanters.

– Fordiscussion’ssake,ifthesuggestedplanwereimplementedandcontractedout,thecostwouldbefrom$10Kto$20K–inadditiontothecostofremovingtheasphalt.Therewasadiscussionofwritinggrantsandaskingforcommunitysupport,andtherewasasuggestionthattherebeplaquesonthecontainersacknowledgingmembersorbusinesseswhocontributed.

– SincethisisaCountyfacility,wecan’tgoforwardwithanythinguntilwegettheirapproval.JohnPunchesshouldholddiscussionswhilethecurrentcommissionersarestillinoffice.

– KarenPleasantpresentedaslideshowofothercounties’displaygardenssothatwecouldgetideas.
