1987-1988 Research Specialist, SaLUT, Inc., Columbia, Maryland.

Designed and conducted short rotational forestry research to determine the effects

of 2,4-D, a pesticide/growth regulator, on biomass, pulp, and extractive

production. Examined the production, marketing, and consumption systems and

the constraints limiting development of short rotation woody biomass. Conducted

wetland assessments. Prepared domestic and foreign project proposals, and

technical reports on wastewater treatment.

1983-1986 Peace Corps Volunteer, USAID Forest Land-Use Planning Project, Peace Corps,

Designed simple water harvesting and agroforestry techniques can make drought-

stricken and degraded land economically productive. Results appear in a refereed

journal. Developed planning maps for agriculture, range, forestry, and wildlife

management based on landscapes, soils, and vegetation communities by using

satellite images, aerial photographs, and on-site investigations throughout Niger.

Provided technical assistance and training to CARE, Lutheran World Relief,

Africare, Peace Corps, and the government of Niger.

Organized and directed multisectoral rapid assessment of the earthquakes impacts

on resident and displaced households in the Artibonite Department for Save-the-

Children (SC). The assessment focused on health, education, food security,

livelihoods and child protection. Designed survey, trained local SC staff how to

conduct key informant, focus group and household interviews, and recommended

activities for SC relief efforts.

Conducted a mid-term evaluation of the USAID Guinea Natural Resources

Management Project. Assessed the overall soundness of the project's approach

and effectiveness to promote soil, water, and forest conservation and utilization.

assessment focused on how to direct agriculture and forestry policies and

interventions so that they have minimal negative effects on the forests and

wildlife habitat of Cameroon.

1991 Soil and Water Conservation Specialist, The University of Arizona / Institut du

Sahel / CILSS, Mali, Cape Verde, Senegal, Niger, Burkina Faso, and France.

Assessed the soil and water conservation research activities in five Sahelian

countries. Interviewed researchers, governmental officials, technicians, and

managers in each country on how the Institut du Sahel could better encourage soil

and water conservation research.

1990 Soil Scientist, University of Missouri-Columbia / USAID, Nairobi, Kenya.

Trained Kenya Soil Survey personnel how to correlate indigenous land / soil

classification systems with scientific based soil classification systems

(ethnopedology). The survey helped guide agricultural research and extension and

provided insight into resource tenure systems. The survey area included the

coffee, maize, sorghum, millet, and range agro-ecological zones of Kenya's

Eastern Province.

1989-1990 Director of Soil Survey, Dames and Moore Ltd. / OMVS / USAID, Senegal;

Mali; Washington DC; and Paris France.

Designed and directed 1:50,000 and 1:20,000 scale reconnaissance soil and land-

use surveys for the Upper Senegal River Valley's master plan in Mali, Senegal,

and Mauritania. Trained and supervised four teams of Senegalese soil scientists.

Combined conventional survey methods with an ethnoscientific approach that

allowed close integration with other natural resource and socioeconomic aspects

of the master plan. Wrote sections of the master plan that concerned soil, water,

and agriculture. The results of this work were published in a book and refereed

journal article.

Conducted a 30,000-hectare soil survey and watershed management study for a

community development project in the Maïssade Commune. Advised and trained

technicians how to improve their soil conservation activities. Wrote an
