CHRONOLOGY OF EMPLOYMENT
2010-present Assistant Professor, Center for Rural Health, Mel and Enid Zuckerman College
of Public Health and Adjunct Assistant Professor, Office of Arid Lands Studies,
School of Natural Resources and the Environment, College of Agriculture and
Life Sciences, The University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona. .
1986-present Consultant. Tucson, Arizona.
Conduct environmental assessments, project monitoring and evaluation, natural
resource mapping, project identification and design, research, training, and
teaching. Direct experience with environmental and infectious disease
epidemiology, GIS and GPS, aerial videography, satellite image processing, on-
site wastewater treatment, water harvesting (results in a refereed journal),
irrigation management, ethnoecology (results in a refereed journal), rapid rural
appraisals, food security, and household surveys. Clients and funding agencies
include CARE, Save the Children, Catholic Relief Services, City of Malibu
California, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, USAID, USDOJ, USDA, WFP, IFAD,
UNDP, and Universities of Arizona and Missouri. Specific contracts are listed
below.
1999-2010 Associate, Office of Arid Lands Studies, The University of Arizona, Tucson,
Arizona.
Advisor to Drs. Andrew Comrie and Steve Yool and conduct environmental
analysis of LANDSAT remote sensing data since May 2006 for their EPA grant
“A valley fever (coccidioidomycosis) public health decision support system based
on climate and environmental changes.” Wrote and managed grants funded by the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from November 1999 to June 2002
and the Arizona Disease Control Research Commission from November 2001 to
December 2004 that characterized the environmental requirements for the soil-
borne fungus that cause coccidioidomycosis (valley fever) and epidemiology of
the disease. Used geographic information systems, household survey techniques,
and epidemiological methods to identify associations between environmental
characteristics and cases of valley fever in southern Arizona. Helped coordinate
NASA funded regional workshops from February 2000 to December 2001. These
workshops informed state, local and tribal government representatives how to
J.A. Tabor - 2
better access and use remote sensing and GIS information and technologies. Dr.
Stuart Marsh, supervisor.
2007-2010 Associate Specialist, Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health, The
University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona.
Design, create, and use an Arizona health workforce database and perform GIS
and statistical analyses associated with AHEC-funded Arizona Health Workforce
Study for the Rural Health Office. Dr. Gary Hart, principal investigator and
supervisor.
2006-2008 Hiking Guide, Miraval Resort, Tucson, Arizona.
On-call mountain hiking guide. Assured that resort guests had safe, enjoyable, and
informative hikes in the mountains around Tucson.
2004-2008 Project Coordinator, Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health, The
University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona.
Coordinated a NIH Fogarty grant to conduct training and research in occupational
health and safety for mine workers in Zambia and Zimbabwe for the College of
Public Health. Dr. Jeff Burgess, principal investigator and supervisor.
2006 Teaching Associate. Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health, The
University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona.
Supported instruction of student in the 3-unit course, CPH 575 Environmental and
Occupational Health. Attended lectures, answered student questions, posted
course materials on Web in a D2L format, graded quizzes and homework
assignments, and gave a lecture on GIS in public health. Dr. M.K. O’Rourke,
supervisor.
1987-1988 Research Specialist, SaLUT, Inc., Columbia, Maryland.
Designed and conducted short rotational forestry research to determine the effects
of 2,4-D, a pesticide/growth regulator, on biomass, pulp, and extractive
production. Examined the production, marketing, and consumption systems and
the constraints limiting development of short rotation woody biomass. Conducted
wetland assessments. Prepared domestic and foreign project proposals, and
technical reports on wastewater treatment.
1983-1986 Peace Corps Volunteer, USAID Forest Land-Use Planning Project, Peace Corps,
Niamey, Niger.
Designed simple water harvesting and agroforestry techniques can make drought-
stricken and degraded land economically productive. Results appear in a refereed
journal. Developed planning maps for agriculture, range, forestry, and wildlife
management based on landscapes, soils, and vegetation communities by using
satellite images, aerial photographs, and on-site investigations throughout Niger.
Provided technical assistance and training to CARE, Lutheran World Relief,
Africare, Peace Corps, and the government of Niger.
1981-1983 Research Assistant, Department of Soils, Water, and Engineering, University of
Arizona, Tucson, Arizona.
Designed and conducted research on improving the accuracy of sampling
programs that monitor the soil fertility level of irrigated cotton fields. Conducted
J.A. Tabor - 3
laboratory analysis of soil and plant tissue samples. The results appear in three
refereed journal articles. Used geostatistics and multivariate statistics to evaluate
research projects. Studied irrigation techniques and water movement in soils.
Designed, prepared, and conducted soil laboratory classes and assisted in
agricultural extension programs.
1976-1981 Soil Scientist, Soil Conservation Service (now Natural Resource Conservation
Service), USDA, Tennessee.
Supervised and trained soil mappers. Developed large and small-scale maps of
agricultural, urban, and forest lands. The work appears in two books. Conducted
natural resource inventories for the national inventory and monitoring program.
Advised citizens, political officials, and engineers. Designed, surveyed, and
supervised construction of dams, drainage, and erosion control structures.
Designed sustainable farm plans to maximize long-term animal, woodland, and
crop production.
