MEMORY GAMES

• In “Memory Games” minimal series, I continue with my old search for the ambiguous relationship between reality and representation. Alluding to Cicero’s proverb “the face is the mirror of the soul” –and the anonymous phrase that completes it- “… and the eyes are its tell-tale”.

• I explore the interrelationship that exists between the face/expression as a vehicle of the soul, seeking to achieve that such mirror in which the subject looks at himself after having been stared at, is revealed in the alien gaze, in such a way that the eyes in which the spectator pretends to enter are his own pretend to transcend the structure of my own remembrance, naturally organized in associative images, forcing temporal and spatial ruptures in order to create-recreate interior landscapes that surge, like evocations, from the contrived interplay of images extracted from yore that are decontextualized and snatched away from their original narrative.

• The result are portraits accompanied by points of reference and objects that appear as toys from the past, ludic elements that, like symbols, allude to the infancy and also to the unsettling current times.

• The memory frequently evokes, stores, represses or replaces facts or experiences; in this series I select, decide and take ownership of the day-to-day world and of the past, and by means of an inventive force I seek for it to transfigure into something else, something that leads me to see beyond things.

• I reflect about the course of time, of this floating and imprecise past, resorting to quietness as an important element that sustains movement. Within this game I perform combinations of temporary situations loaded with an ambivalent meaning, which lead to possible associations, which however not always reveal the whole truth.
