Ecuador’s

climate is

defined by its

location in the

world and topography.

Ecuador is the second- smallest country in South

America. But there are few places on earth

where you will find so much natural diversity. In

one day’s drive you can journey from the

Amazon Basin across glaciated Andean

volcanoes, down through tropical clouds to

beautiful beaches on the Pacific Ocean.

Due to differences in altitude and proximity to

the equator, the climate of Ecuador varies by

region.

Quito is said to pass through

four seasons everyday. The

mornings are often clear and

clouds start rolling in time for

afternoon rain showers.

There are two seasons in the

Galapagos Islands. The warmest is

between December to May and it is

the time when the sky is always clear

and the sun shines. From June to

November the weather is a little cold

but it is the best to enjoy Galapagos'

famous marine reserve.

The coastal lowlands to

the west of Ecuador are

typically warm with

temperatures in the

region of 25 °C

(77 °F). The coastal

areas are affected by

ocean currents and between January and April are hot and rainy.

In the tropical rainforests, the air is often humid and it is common to see low-hanging clouds.

Summary

From May to December, cool currents from the south keep temperatures a few degrees lower, and it rarely rains, although it is often gray, damp and overcast, especially in July and August.

The highland dry season is from June through September, with another short, dry season around Christmas. Daytime temperatures in Quito average a high of 74°F and a low of 54°F year-round.

Ecuador has markedly different climates and microclimates. Weather patterns vary according to geography and temperatures are determined more by elevation than by season.

Ocean currents influence the Galapagos Islands and the coast. The warm central Pacific current causes a hot, rainy, humid season from January through April. Daytime high temperatures average 86°F.
