Carbohydrates- Provides energy- Important to brain and heart- 2 main types
- Simple (sugar)- Complex (starches)
- Most important carbs are complex- ½ daily energy should come from carbs- Body breaks carbs down- Simple: easier to digest
Carbohydrates (cont.)- found in refined sugar- Found in most food groups except meat- Alcohol is also good source
Fibres- Refers to carbs that cant be digested- Helps clean out bowels- Two types
- Insoluble (cannot be dissolved in water)- Soluble (partially dissolves in water)
- Helps prevent diabetes and overeating
Vitamins- Kids bodies absorb different types of vitamins- 98% kids don’t eat the right amount of vitamins- Helps digest food - Must be ingested - Helps fight of disease

- Good kind (monounsaturated and polyunsaturated)- Bad Kind (saturated and trans)
- Bad fats cause obesity- 16-30% of kids in the USA are obese- Obesity causes many diseases

Protein-Builds, maintains, replaces body tissues-Body uses protein to make protein molecules-Helps muscle development and athletice performance-2 types
-Complete proteins (has 9 essential amino acids)
-Incomplete proteins ( dosen’t have essential amino acids)
-Amino acids are building blocks of protein
