The hope is they find connection in eachother and that somehow the world will right itself.

“ “With 2020 comes a lot of topical options for what you could base a play on: Black Lives Matter, the upcoming election, climate change and, of course, the global pandemic. I’ve long been interested in an apocalypse play and the perfect springboard for me was when my friend, David Herman, wrote a series of articles in 2013 about eating only from a 30 Day Survival Package, titling the series: Dining at the End of the World. With the shift of moving our show to Zoom, I asked head of theatre, Brian Rickel, if the cast and I could create a play from scratch, which would be designed specifically to be performed on Zoom, rather than put a stage play on an online medium.

I studied devising in graduate school and actually workshopped an early version of this apocalypse play back in 2013. It was not particularly great. I thought the way to go would be to watch one actor who had survived the apocalypse and take a glimpse into what life would look like. As you can imagine, it was pretty depressing to just see one person walking around, completely alone, talking to himself, with no hope of connecting with someone else.

So when I decided to tackle this idea again, I knew the key would be for people to find others. It was also important to me that this relates to our world today - and how could it not? With all of our Zoom meetings and classes and book clubs and game nights? We started with who these people are and how they might react if they were suddenly no longer alone. And then what? What would you do if you had the chance to chat with strangers? Would you even want to talk to them or would you want to just stick with the routine you’d created for yourself?

We discovered that these characters had many of the same desires we have now - we want to go outside, we want hugs, we want to spend more time with people - and the hope is that they find connection in each other and that somehow their world will right itself. This is my hope for our world as well.
