Transcript of Jordan Coulson Industrial Design Portfolio
During my university second year I worked individually on a project for
New York shoe brand, LUP. My task was to design a shoe that would stand out
on the UK shoe market, competing as a high end, quality product.
I have taken inspiration from the Black Rhino for my final designs, developing on their iconic horns and thick skinned appearance in a way that will display durability, strength and style to con-
sumers. My final proposals offer a view on how this style can be used to create a sports shoe, a walking boot and also
as a casual shoe.
Create a shaver and an image that would attract the ‘generation Y’ to
Philips shaving products.
We proposed that Philips partner up with a brand that focuses on this audi-ence, and create a product using both
of the companies expertise. We offered two examples of how this could work,
one for Philips/Lynx (Axe) and another for Philips/Topman.
Philips/Axe shavers are now on sale in the US.
83% of this market are not brand loyal.
High Cost - ‘Mum’ would usually buy the shaver, and she didn’t believe the price of a Philips shaver repre-sented the amount of use it would recieve.
Father Figure - Teenagers appear less influenced by the shaver their Dad uses and more towards media influences.
70% of parents would ask what brand their child wanted before purchasing.
On average this consumer would start shaving at 15.
Few between 15-21 could actually grow a ‘full’ beard.
Consumer Brand Influence
To efficently reform the image of Philips shavers partner up with a brand that focuses entirely on this consumer.
Without losing the product quality which Philips has a good image for.
65% of Mums would buy Gillette, with only 25% say-ing they would buy Philips.
Use a fashion influence to reflect the consumers per-sonality more actively.
‘Tone down’ the technical aspect of the product, as fewer settings are required.
Making it cheaper and
more accessible.
Scale-back Product New Brand Image Influence
CADIn this project I was assigned to choose an object and model each part to scale
in Solidworks.
I modelled my bedroom lamp which consisted for 22 pieces, and then ren-dered the final design using Keyshot.
From March ‘13 I was taken on as an intern at Plowman Brothers, a company that designed a range of Argricultural,
Rail and Livestock equipment for clients across Europe and parts of Africa.
From the start I worked on my own projects for clients including Morrisons. I designed aerodynamic Livestock Con-tainers and parts for show motorbikes.
Inbetween client projects I would cre-ate precise technical drawings for the
design engineers, and also detailed wire diagrams that went into customer pur-
chase packages.
*A Fuel saving in the region of 5-7% would be expected.
This year I will be entering the RSA de-sign competition. I have chosen to work
on the ‘Re-invent the Toilet’ brief.
My proposal is to design a community toilet for Peri-Urban districts around the world, that can adapt to the envi-ronment of the district, offering a long
term sanitation solution.
AIM
Design a community toilet and service for Peri-Urban disticts
that respond to immediate san-itation issues, whilst supporting
community growth.
Loughboroughs
Development
Peri-Urban
Communities
Carbonisation process that converts human
waste into energy.
Product
My design is a blueprint that can be adjusted to best suit the requirements of the communi-ties. Eg, Materials, Size, Manufacture methods.
Each ‘unit’ will be made seperately, and can be attached to more units depending on the com-munities population.
Service
Small community group hired and trained.
Toilets will be maintained. Waste will be controlled
and treated using Lough-borough’s system.
Bi-product distributed into the community as
fuel.
Treated waste will then be sold. Generating an in-come for the community.
Freelance5 Months after completing my place-
ment with Plowman Brothers they con-tacted me and asked if I could create
them a new company logo.
The logo was to be based around a Hereford Bull, and simplistic in style.
I have also worked on logo designs for two other companies.
Model MakingAs part of our Philips project we creat-ed a to scale model of our Philips|Lynx
design proposal.
We used a rapid prototyping machine to create the form, and then took ad-vantage of a variety of finishing tech-
niques to complete the look.
New Value Spaces
This is a glimpse at the project I am currently working on for Philips. We
are aiming to create a ‘new value meal space’ for the South Korean market.
