    Te Journal of Physical Terapy Education considers or publicationmanuscripts pertaining to all aspects o education in physical therapy.

    Manuscripts are invited describing qualitative and quantitative inves-tigations and descriptions o educational interventions and innovativemethods used in academic, clinical, community, or patient education.

    Te author(s) must have methodically examined the outcomes o theeducational intervention or innovation and drawn conclusions aboutits useulness in physical therapy education and practice.

    TeJournal of Physical Terapy Education endorses the Uniform Re-quirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals put orth

    by the International Committee o Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE).

    Research Papers

    Position Papers Reviews o the Literature

    Method/Model Presentations Case Reports

    Research Reports: Authors should report the results of original experi-

    mental or observational research projects.

    Introduction: Briefy state the relevance o the study or physicaltherapy education, the specic purpose o the study, and the re-search question(s) or hypothesis(es).

    Review o Literature: Briefy describe the methodology and nd-ings rom published literature germane to the study being presented(eg, justiy the variables, hypotheses, sample, or methodology). A

    summary at the end o the review o literature section should pointout the relevance o the review to the study at hand.

    Subjects: Describe the sample, including selection criteria and pro-cess.Methods: Describe the research design and procedures; the nature

    o the data; the data collection instrument(s); and methods o datacollection, reduction, and analysis.

    Results: Give a verbal summary o the results together with any sta-

    tistical summary o the data or other representations o the ndingsand analyses (tables, gures).

    Discussion and Conclusion: First state conclusions based directlyon the research question/hypothesis and the results o the study,then expand with an explanation o the relationship o the ndings

    to the review o the literature. A discussion o the implications o

    the ndings or physical therapy education and conclusions shouldbe included.

    Position Papers: Authors should adopt and deend a position on some

    issue o current concern and importance to physical therapy educators.Background and Purpose: A brie introduction states the purposeo the article.

    Position and Rationale: Te position and the authors rationale ortaking that position are elucidated. Issues should be stated clearly

    and theoretical oundations with literature citations or the ratio-nale stated. Te logic o the argument and stance on the positionshould be clear.

    Discussion and Conclusion: A conclusion should summarize the

    position relative to the concern or issue addressed. An abstract is

    required (see Manuscript Preparation and Requirements).

    Reviews of the Literature: Authorsshould provide a critical overview

    o the research on specic topics related to physical therapy educa-tion. Tese reviews may be qualitative in nature, providing a summaryo relevant work; they may be systematic reviews ollowing a specic

    analysis ormat; they also may be statistically based meta-analyses orelevant literature.

    Background and Purpose: In all cases, the authors should includean introduction.Methods: Selection criteria, search strategy description o studies,

    methodological quality.Results: When applicable, they should include tables and guresshowing characteristics o the reviewed studies, specication o the

    interventions that were compared, and the results o studies. Param-

    eters or excluding studies in the review should also be included.Discussion and Conclusion: Te value o the conclusions in guid-ing educational policy and practice will be a determining actor inthe decision to publish the review.

    Method/Model Presentations: Authors should describe the develop-ment and implementation o an innovative approach to education used

    in physical therapy. Evidence o testing the reliability and validity o themethod or model to education and a clear description o its elements

    should be included. Evidence rom the literature supporting the use othe method or model should be cited. Educational outcomes relatedto the implementation o the method or model must be included. Es-

    sential in the summary o this method/model presentation should beconclusions about its useulness and the easibility and generalizabil-

    ity o the application o the innovation to physical therapy education.Areas or uture investigation based on the method/model should beidentied.

    Background and Purpose: A brie introduction states the purposeo the paper.

    Method/Model Description and Evaluation: Provide a description

    o the method or model that can be easily understood or replicated.Outcomes: Identiy measures used to assess the educational inno-

    vation.Discussion and Conclusion: Provide a discussion that addressesthe value ound in the reported innovation.

    Case Reports: Authors should submit descriptions o educationalpractice and interventions not previously described in the literature.

    Case reports dier rom method/model presentations insoar as theymay describe an intervention or educational innovation with a small-

    er sample o individuals (or even an N = l). Case reports must statethe purpose o the case report, citing relevant literature. Case reportsshould provide a clear and thorough description o the case, including

    the ollowing: the rationale or and implementation o an educationalintervention, methods or instruments used to evaluate the interven-tion, and outcomes. Since case reports cannot document ecacy, dis-

    cussion o the case should include recommendations or urther study(eg, method/model or research investigations).

    Also welcome are letters to the editor that support or reute material inthe last issue, make pertinent comments on current issues, or encour-

    age uture discussion in the physical therapy education community andjournal. Letters to the editor should be submitted to the editor directly,not through Scholar One.

    Submission RequirementsAll manuscripts must include the ollowing: category o manuscript(rom the 5 choices above); title; authors ull names, credentials, jobtitle, place o work, city/state (the lead author should provide bothmailing address and email address); 3-5 key words or the manuscript;

    an abstract (no more than 1 page, double-spaced) that ollows the samestructure as the manuscript (see below or manuscript structures).

    Articles must be written in English and should be limited to 15typed, double-spaced pages o text. Authors should ollow the styleguidelines in the American Medical Associations (AMA) Manual of

    Style (10th edition) or text and reerence ormats.

    Figures and TablesPlease submit all illustrations, fgures, and photos as high-resolu-

    tion fles in JPG, TIFF, or EPS ormat (300 dpi or higher) . ablesmay be embedded in the Word document. Legends must be includedwith each table, illustration, or photo (please see AMAs 10th EditionoManual of Style or correct table and gure ormatting). ables, g-ures, and appendixes should ollow the text and reerences (in that se-quence) and should be numbered consecutively. Include only 1 tableor gure per page.

    TerminologyConsistent with APA Department o Education guidelines, the terms

    physical therapist education program and physical therapist assis-tant education program should be used when reerring to particular

    programs. Authors should also indicate whether they are reerring toproessional (entry-level) programs or postproessional education pro-grams. I reerring to education in general, or both physical therapistsand physical therapist assistants, then physical therapy education isacceptable. For abbreviations, P may be used to reer to physicaltherapists; PA may be used to reer to physical therapist assistants.Te abbreviation P should not be used when reerring to the proes-sion in general or to interventions that physical therapists or physicaltherapist assistants provide. Finally, people-rst language should beused throughout all manuscripts.

    AuthorshipAs noted in the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts, an author isgenerally considered to be someone who has made substantive intel-lectual contributions to a published study. Authorship credit should

    be based on (1) substantial contributions to conception and design, oracquisition o data, or analysis and interpretation o data; (2) draingthe article or revising it critically or important intellectual content; and(3) nal approval o the version to be published. Authors should meetconditions 1, 2, and 3.

    Groups o persons who have contributed materially to the paper butwhose contributions do not justiy authorship may be listed under aheading such as clinical investigators or participating investigators,and their unction or contribution should be described-or example,served as scientic advisors, critically reviewed the study proposal,collected data, or provided and cared or study patients. Authorswill be required to disclose their role in manuscript preparation.

    Ethical Standards on Protocol Approval

    Research submitted to theJournal of Physical Terapy Education mustcomply with ethical standards or human and animal research. For anyresearch involving humans or animals, authors must conrm that theirinstitution or other similar body approved the protocol. For studies in-volving human subjects, authors must also indicate in the manuscriptthat they obtained inormed consent rom participants or that the re-quirement o inormed consent was waived by the institutions internalreview board.

    Conflict of InterestConfict o interest exists when an author (or the authors institution),has nancial, proessional or personal relationships that may inappro-priately infuence (bias) his or her actions. When authors submit anytype o manuscript, they are responsible or disclosing all nancial and

    personal relationships that might bias their work. On a confict o in-terest notication page that ollows the title page, authors must stateexplicitly whether potential conficts do or do not exist and provideadditional detail, i necessary, in a cover letter. For studies unded by anagency with a proprietary or nancial interest in the outcome, authorsshould describe the role o the study sponsor(s), i any, in study design;in the collection, analysis, and interpretation o data; in the writing o

    the report; and in the decision to submit the report or publication. Ithe supporting source had no such involvement, the authors shouldso state.
