JOPLIN NEWS HERALD, SUNDAY, MAY 26, 1912. NEWS AND NOTES OF SPOR YANKEES SAFE WITH TWO GOOD BACKSTOPS INCLUDING STREET “Gabby” Street Now W ith the New York Yankees MANAGER WOLVERTON HAS STRENGTHENED HIS TEAM BY ADDITIONS. (By W. J. MaeBeth.) NKW YORK, May 26.—Manager Harry Wotverton of tho Yankees pulled a mighty fine stroke of busine** when he landed Catcher Street from the Wash ington club. Scoffers were inclined to dieagree with ouch a statement, especially when the veteran backstop got away tu a bad start this epring. But somehow, since Ed Sweeney came to term* with the Highland management a change for the better has come over the only sea soned receiver with the Crag men up to the time of Sweeney’s entrance on tbs* scene. Sweeney was Just the tonic nectessry for Street’s greatest good. Far be It from any Intent to Intimate that Street had leafed while the club was at hie tender mercy. He was a sick man ail tpring— no sick that he often ehouid have been In bed when he was sporting th# cheet piotector and the mitt. He had Just com menced to find himself when Sweney bobbed up. But probably he would not have found himself so quickly but for hts rival veteran's return. Street will help Sweeney every bit as much as Sweeney will benefit Street. They are two of the finest catchers In the American league. Sweeney was the class of the circuit In 1910. There was no better catcher anywhere In 1905 than Street. Rheumatism put him out of com mission in 1910. Last year he was al most himself again. Now he la travel ing aa well aa at any time In ills career. And with Sweeney at hie coat tails all the time he'll have to keep on travel ing. Sweenay and Street should easily prove the greatest catching combination In the big show. Each Is a strapping big fel low capable of catching the entire schedule of games lf fortunate enough to •scape injury. Street ean hold any pitcher. For years he teamed with Wal ter Johnson, who packs the fattest ball of the age. He baa also had lots of ex perience with spit ball receiving Sweeney la the only catcher In ‘he coun try who ean properly handle Ruasel Ford'a freak delivery. The pair worked together ainee they were kids In the ’’bushes.’! They are so familiar with each other that often this star battery works without eigne. CAUGHT BAM.. FROM MONUMENT. The lesson promisee to develop a great fight In friendly rivalry ttetween Street j and Sweney and th# harder titer tus sle the better off will they and the dub | he. Sweeney baa one alight advantage | lr the fact that he will be assigned with Rusael Ford, the pitching der. Yet Street has a qualification that offsete this. at least. Street Is the greatest catcher of the age on a high lift. Ha never muffs one. Anything that he has lime to get under he can hold, whather It be a tall fly to the Infield or a towering foul hack near the stand. He sets himself right under the hall, holding hie glove over his heed MISSOURI WALKS OFF WITH THE HONORS IN THE DES MOINES MEET IRE ON I NICHOLSON PROVRS TO BE THE BTA It IN THE GREAT VALLEY CONTEST.
