WEDNESDAY WORKSHOPSIntroduction to Pollinators

Growing "pollinator friendly" gardens is super trendy at the moment, but what does that word really mean? Most gardeners know that bees and butterflies fall into this category, but have little understanding beyond that. Pollination is the key to sexual reproduction in plants, and plants are ingenious at finding various agents to accomplish this for them! Bees and butterflies qualify, but so do hummingbirds, parrots, flies, beetles, and in some cases even mosquitoes and lizards! Join Lyndon for a fascinating and insightful glimpse into the secret lives of pollinators! You'll learn about the great diversity of bees in our world, the marvelous and improbable ways that plants find to reproduce themselves, and why your garden matters as a haven for the small and hard working creatures that fill this role!

Instructor: Lyndon PennerWednesday, July 18 | 9:00 am - 12:00 pm $80

Shady Characters: Bedding Plants and Annuals for Dark Places

While there isn't a shortage of perennials that will do well in partial to considerably shady parts of the yard, gardeners often struggle with finding beautiful bedding plants to use in dark borders and containers. While there are certainly less options for shade than there is for sun, there are still some really excellent plants that will perform beautifully all summer in beds, borders, and planters where there isn't much light to be had. Join Lyndon for a lively and interesting journey through some of your best choices for those dimly lit sections of the garden.

Instructor: Lyndon PennerWednesday, July 18 | 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm $80

Companion GardeningCompanion planting as a gardening technique has been around for ages. Some view it as an art form. Some people attribute the benefits accrued from prating its concepts to be rooted in science. The concept is certainly simple - that by growing in close proximity certain plants can bring benefits in the form of healthy and vigorous plants that produce bountiful harvests of great looking and tasting edibles that are good for you and your family. However, if one delves deeper into the principles, cultural practices and science of companion planting, the result is that your garden is healthy, productive and a complete environmental system in its own right, nestled into the larger environment. Companion gardening involves:

• Learning plant characteristics and needs;

• Improving your soil;

• Protecting plants from the weather;

• Integrated pest management,

• Creating plant guilds and food forests,

• And much more.
