Fort Langley’s Good Friday Walk Stations of Holy Week

Opening Introduction Welcome and announcements

Acknowledgement of First Nation Territories We acknowledge that we are gathering on the unceded territories of the Kwantlen, the Matsqui, the Semiahmoo and the Katzie people; and we follow in the steps of all our relations and all our fore-bearers as we gather on this land… this sacred space.

Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy world-wide Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Station 1 – Jesus Enters Jerusalem (Matthew 21: 1-11)

Fort Langley Community Hall Led by Wagner Hills Farm Society

Recitation Leader: We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. People: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Page 4: Join the churches of Fort Langley as we reflect on and ......who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Response Station 4 – Jesus Prays

Scripture: Matthew 21: 1-11 Now when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me. 3 If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will send them at once.” 4 This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying, 5 “Say to the daughter of Zion,‘Behold, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’” 6 The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them. 8 Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” 10 And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?” 11 And the crowds said, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.”

Collect Lord Jesus Christ, as you upturn all expectations, make us ready to follow you. Help us to enter into your story, be ready to meet you as you are, and be prepared to love and serve one another in your name. Amen.

Response Song: Blessed Be Your Name *lyrics provided on page 15.

Station 2 – Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet (John 13: 1-5, 12-17)

Lee’s Market Led by Fort Langley Evangelical Free Church

Page 5: Join the churches of Fort Langley as we reflect on and ......who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Response Station 4 – Jesus Prays

Recitation Leader: We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. People: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Scripture: John 13: 1-5, 12-17 1Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. 2 During supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him, 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, 4 rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. 5 Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

12 When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you? 13 You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. 16 Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.

Collect Loving God, as Jesus took a basin and poured the water, he washed the feet of the disciples. Bless the feet of all who follow your road today. Wash away the stains and strains of this life. We pray that we may walk anew in your ways. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Response A response will be provided.

Station 3 – The Last Supper (Mark 14: 12-26)

Lee’s Market Led by The Parish of St. George

Page 6: Join the churches of Fort Langley as we reflect on and ......who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Response Station 4 – Jesus Prays

Recitation Leader: We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. People: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Scripture: Mark 14: 12-26 12 And on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrificed the Passover lamb, his disciples said to him, “Where will you have us go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?” 13 And he sent two of his disciples and said to them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him, 14 and wherever he enters, say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says, Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 15 And he will show you a large upper room furnished and ready; there prepare for us.” 16 And the disciples set out and went to the city and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover. 17 And when it was evening, he came with the twelve. 18 And as they were reclining at table and eating, Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me.” 19 They began to be sorrowful and to say to him one after another, “Is it I?” 20 He said to them, “It is one of the twelve, one who is dipping bread into the dish with me. 21 For the Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.” 22 And as they were eating, he took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to them, and said, “Take; this is my body.” 23 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank of it. 24 And he said to them, “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. 25 Truly, I say to you, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.” 26 And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Collect Eternal God, in the sharing of a meal your son established a new covenant for all people. Grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit these signs of our life in faith may speak again to our hearts, feed our spirits, and refresh our bodies. Amen.

May we who celebrate this sign of his great love

show in our lives the fruits of his redemption; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Station 4 – Jesus Prays in the Garden (Matthew 26: 36-42)

St. George’s Anglican Church Led by The Parish of St. George

Recitation Leader: We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. People: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Scripture: Matthew 26: 36-42 36 Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.” 37 And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me.” 39 And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” 40 And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, “So, could you not watch with me one hour? 41 Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 42 Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.”

Page 8: Join the churches of Fort Langley as we reflect on and ......who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Response Station 4 – Jesus Prays

Collect Lord, we pray when our strength fails, when our hope fades and when our spirit grows weary, that we will put our unbounded trust in you. In turn, may we bring your love - in a word or action of comfort to another - in their moment of meaninglessness, depression or despair. We ask this in the name of the one we follow. Amen.

Station 5 – Jesus Willingly Gives His Life (John 18:1-5a, 10-11)

Living Waters Church Led by Living Waters Church

Recitation Leader: We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. People: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Scripture: John 18: 1-5a, 10-11 1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples across the brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered. 2 Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus often met there with his disciples. 3 So Judas, having procured a band of soldiers and some officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, went there with lanterns and torches and

weapons. 4 Then Jesus, knowing all that would happen to him, came forward and said to them, “Whom do you seek?” 5 They answered him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am he.” 10 Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant and cut off his right ear. (The servant's name was Malchus.) 11 So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into its sheath; shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?”

Collect Holy One, may we see your presence in all the burdens we carry today. Help us to share our burdens more freely, not to be afraid to acknowledge our fears and our pain. May we be more aware of the crosses that others bear and make time to alleviate their burden. May your face shine on each of us through the crosses we bear. Amen.

Response: Where to Seek Love (William Blake)

I thought Love lived in the hot sunshine, But O he lives in the moony light! I thought to find Love in the heat of day, But sweet Love is the comforter of night.   Seek Love in the pity of others' woe, In the gentle relief of another's care, In the darkness of night and the winter's snow, In the naked and outcast, seek Love there.

Station 6 – Peter and the Disciples Forsake Jesus (John 18:17-18, 25-27)

Living Waters Church Led by Living Waters Church

Recitation Leader: We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. People: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Scripture: John 18: 17-18, 25-27 17 The servant girl at the door said to Peter, “You also are not one of this man's disciples, are you?” He said, “I am not.”

Page 10: Join the churches of Fort Langley as we reflect on and ......who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Response Station 4 – Jesus Prays

18 Now the servants and officers had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold, and they were standing and warming themselves. 25 Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “You also are not one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not.” 26 One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Did I not see you in the garden with him?” 27 Peter again denied it, and at once a rooster crowed.

Collect Lord, we thank you that in your passion you offer forgiveness and invite us to be with you where hunger is no more and death has no dominion. May the broken bread of life fracture our stony hearts for the sake of your kingdom. Amen.

Station 7 – Jesus Before Pilate (Mark 15: 1-5, 6-15)

Parking lot at St. Andrew’s Chapel Led by United Churches of Langley

Recitation Leader: We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. People: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Scripture: Mark 15: 1-5, 6-15 1 And as soon as it was morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council. And they bound Jesus and led him away and delivered him over to Pilate. 2 And Pilate asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, “You have said so.” 3 And the chief priests accused him of many things. 4 And Pilate again asked him, “Have you no answer to make? See how many charges they bring against you.” 5 But Jesus made no further answer, so that Pilate was amazed.

Page 11: Join the churches of Fort Langley as we reflect on and ......who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Response Station 4 – Jesus Prays

6 Now at the feast he used to release for them one prisoner for whom they asked. 7 And among the rebels in prison, who had committed murder in the insurrection, there was a man called Barabbas. 8 And the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do as he usually did for them. 9 And he answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” 10 For he perceived that it was out of envy that the chief priests had delivered him up. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release for them Barabbas instead. 12 And Pilate again said to them, “Then what shall I do with the man you call the King of the Jews?” 13 And they cried out again, “Crucify him.” 14 And Pilate said to them, “Why, what evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him.” 15 So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.

Collect O Compassionate One, we pray for those who cannot reach out to you at this moment. We pray for all victims of violence; those who suffer it and those who inflict it. We pray especially for children, for the elderly and those too vulnerable to defend themselves. May victims of cruelty and oppression know that you are always with them. Amen.

Response Song: God Weeps Words by Shirley Erena Murray; Music by Jim Strathdee

God weeps at love withheld, at strength misused, at children’s innocence abused, and till we change the way we love, God weeps.   God bleeds at anger’s fist, at trust betrayed, at women battered and afraid, and till we change the way we win, God bleeds.   God waits for stones to melt, for peace to seed, for hearts to hold each other’s need, and till we understand the Christ, God waits.

Station 8 – Jesus is Mocked, Beaten, Crucified and Forgives (Luke 23: 32-38)

Parking Lot at St. Andrew’s Chapel Led by United Churches of Langley

Recitation Leader: We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. People: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Scripture: Luke 23: 32-38 32 Two others, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him. 33 And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. 34 And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” And they cast lots to divide his garments. 35 And the people stood by, watching, but the rulers scoffed at him, saying, “He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ of God, his Chosen One!” 36 The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine 37 and saying, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!” 38 There was also an inscription over him, “This is the King of the Jews.”

Collect Stripped of everything, Oh Jesus, you stood exposed to the jeers and contempt of the people whom you loved. Clothe us with genuine love of others, so that nothing we suffer may ever fill our hearts with hatred or bitterness. Amen.

Response Song: If I Have Been the Source of Pain Words by by Sara M. de Hall; Music by Pablo Sosa

If I have been the source of pain, O God; if to the weak I have refused my strength; if, in rebellion, I have strayed away, forgive me, God. If I have spoken words of cruelty; if I have left some suffering unrelieved; condemn not my insensitivity; forgive me, God. If I’ve insisted on a peaceful life, far from the struggles that the gospel brings, when you prefer to guide me to the strife, forgive me, God.

Station 9 – Jesus Dies and is Laid in the Tomb (John 19: 28-30, Luke 23: 50-56)

Cemetery Led by Wagner Hills Farm Society

Recitation Leader: We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. People: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Scripture: John 19: 28-30 28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.” 29 A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. 30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

Scripture: Luke 23: 50-56 50 Now there was a man named Joseph, from the Jewish town of Arimathea. He was a member of the council, a good and righteous man, 51 who had not consented to their decision and action; and he was looking for the kingdom of God. 52 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 53 Then he took it down and wrapped it in a linen shroud and laid him in a tomb cut in stone, where no one had ever yet been laid. 54 It was the day of Preparation, and the Sabbath was beginning. 55 The women who had come with him from Galilee followed and saw the tomb and how his body was laid. 56 Then they returned and prepared spices and ointments. On the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.

Collect Jesus, each day you put before us life or death. Help us always to choose life. We pray for all those we have known who have died, and for those who have no one to pray for them. We ask for the gift of faith when we are faced with the darkness of the tomb. May we have eyes to see the promise of new life that the darkness can hold when you walk with us. Amen.

Station 10 – The Empty Tomb (Mark 16: 1-7)

Fort Langley Evangelical Free Church Led by Fort Langley Evangelical Free Church

Recitation Leader: We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. People: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Scripture: Mark 16: 1-7 1 When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. 2 And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. 3 And they were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?” 4 And looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled back—it was very large. 5 And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe, and they were alarmed. 6 And he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here. See the place where they laid him. 7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.”

Collect God of mystery, Let your word break open our hearts that we may celebrate that which we do not understand. May the risen Saviour bring all to life in him. May the flowing Spirit set us and all creation free and seal our hearts with faith. Amen.

Blessed Be Your Name - Matt Redman

Blessed be Your Name In the land that is plentiful

Where Your streams of abundance flow Blessed be Your name

Blessed be Your name When I'm found in the desert place

Though I walk through the wilderness Blessed be Your name

Every blessing You pour out, I'll  Turn back to praise

When the darkness closes in, Lord Still I will say

Chorus Blessed be the name of the Lord

Blessed be Your name Blessed be the name of the Lord Blessed be Your glorious name

Blessed be Your name When the sun's shining down on me When the world's 'all as it should be'

Blessed be Your name

Blessed be Your name On the road marked with suffering  Though there's pain in the offering

Blessed be Your name

Every blessing You pour out I'll  Turn back to praise

When the darkness closes in, Lord Still I will say

You give and take away You give and take away

My heart will choose to say Lord, blessed be Your name

Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing - Robert Robinson

Come, Thou Fount of every blessing Tune my heart to sing Thy grace Streams of mercy, never ceasing Call for songs of loudest praise

Teach me some melodious sonnet Sung by flaming tongues above

Praise the mount, I'm fixed upon it Mount of Thy redeeming love

Here I raise my Ebenezer Hither by Thy help I've come

And I hope, by Thy good pleasure Safely to arrive at home

Jesus sought me when a stranger Wandering from the fold of God He, to rescue me from danger Interposed His precious blood

Oh, to grace how great a debtor Daily I'm constrained to be

Let that goodness like a fetter Bind my wandering heart to Thee

Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it Prone to leave the God I love

Here's my heart, oh, take and seal it Seal it for Thy courts above

Here's my heart, oh, take and seal it Seal it for Thy courts above

Cornerstone - Hillsong Worship

My hope is built on nothing less Than Jesus' blood and righteousness I dare not trust the sweetest frame

But wholly trust in Jesus' name

Christ alone; cornerstone Weak made strong; in the Saviour's love

Through the storm, He is Lord Lord of all

When Darkness seems to hide His face I rest on His unchanging grace In every high and stormy gale My anchor holds within the veil

When He shall come with trumpet sound, Oh, may I then in Him be found;

Dressed in His righteousness alone, Faultless stand before the throne.
