Dear Parents of a Johnsburg High School Student:

The Johnsburg High School Math Department is committed to high standards and improving student achievement in mathematics. In order to help students reach their learning potential in math, we believe each student should have a graphing calculator for their use at all times.

Graphing calculators have become an integral part of high school mathematics because they are efficient and easily accessible . Students use graphing calculators to work with numbers that are difficult to manipulate, to organize data, and to display graphs. They allow students to experiment with different ways to approach problems, study trends in data, and check the accuracy and reasonableness of their solutions. Through these activities, students are able to connect what they are learning in school to real-world applications.

The graphing calculators will be utilized in ALL math classes at the high school level. Many science classes will rely on these calculators as well. This instrument is designed to grow with your student's mathematical ability; solving more complex computations as their learning and understanding advances in their high school career.

When choosing a graphing calculator, we recommend the Texas Instruments Tl-84, Tl-84 plus, Tl- 84 plus silver, and Tl-84 plus CE. The Tl- 83 Plus is accepted, but not recommended to purchase. These calculators have substantial memory that allows for students to write and store programs and they are upgradeable via the Internet. In addition, the Johnsburg High School math teachers will be using these calculators with their instruction. Finally, the Tl-83 Plus and Tl-84 have been approved for use on the ACT, SAT, AP, and TCAP tests. You will find brands such as Casio th at are cheaper, but they are not compatible with the Tl-83 or Tl-84 and most of the teachers will not be able to help the students as much with the Casio.

The calculators range from $90- $140 at most local stores or on Amazon . Sales are available throughout the summer and back to school time. There are renting options through the school for $25 a year. If that is something of interest please contact Brad Frey, [email protected], at the high school.

For new graphing calculator purchasers, please save the packaging and give the rewards program numbers to your teacher in the Fall . It enables us to buy classroom accessories.

The Math Department keeps a list of calculator serial numbers from each class. Please copy the number so you will also have a record of your son's/daughter's calculator. This number is found on the back of the calculator.

We appreciate your support in our efforts to improve our program.
