There’s plenty to discover around the coast here, and the most exhilarating way to explore it is on our sea safari! Aboard the 9-metre, 12-seater Natural Explorer boat, you’ll speed across the waves towards Stroma and explore the dramatic coastline. Even more exciting is the chance to observe Scottish wildlife at close quarters, including opportunities for whale and dolphin watching. We’ll provide lifejackets and waterproofs too, so all you need to do is bring your sea legs – and look forward to a trip to remember!

• A thrilling excursion aboard our twin-engined, 500hp Natural Explorer boat.

• Route takes in the awe-inspiring Stacks of Duncansby and rock arch known as Thirle Door, before heading out towards Stroma.

• Chance to observe whales–the waters here are the only place in the UK where you may see orca and minke whales as they migrate.

• Smaller marine mammals to observe include grey seals, porpoises, dolphins and otters

Boat holds a maximum of 12 people. Regular trips throughout the day, weather permitting. In the event of adverse weather and sea conditions boat trips will be cancelled and full refunds will be given. Trip times advertised up to 48 hrs in advance. Booking in advance is encouraged.

Under 16s must be accompanied by a paying adult. There is no maximum age if you are fit enough. There are no formal height restrictions but in order to reach the floor whilst seated on the ‘jockey seat’ participants should have an inside leg measurement of 24 inches. Participants should be in reasonable health, physically fit and agile enough to climb around the vessel. You must declare any medical conditions which might be affected by the activity. The pounding action and impacts from the waves make this experience unsuitable for those with serious back or joint problems, heart complaints or pregnant ladies. Non swimmers are accepted but please informthe supplier at the safety briefing. All guests will be asked to sign a disclaimer and declaration of fitness form.

CASTLE TOUR

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother first sawwhat was then Barrogill Castle in 1952, while mourning the death of her husband, King George VI.

Falling for its isolated charm and hearing it was to beabandoned, she decided to save it. Having acquired the most northerly inhabited castle on the British mainland, The Queen Mother renovated and restored it and created the beautiful gardens you are able to see today.

Visitors to the castle will see the rooms used by Her Majesty when she stayed here and take a walk around the grounds and gardens whilst taking in views of the magnificent scenery across the Pentland Firth to Hoy, the nearest of the Orkney Islands.

The castle is open every day from 10.20 am until lastadmission at 4.00 pm.The visitor centre, tearoom, shop, grounds and animal centre are open every day during the high season from 10.00 am until 5.00 pm.

Caithness Clay Shooting is the ultimate experience in clay pigeon shooting. Taking place on a family owned farm with fantastic views of Morven and into Sutherland-shire, Clay Shooting is fast becoming a sport for all.

CAITHNESS CLAY SHOOTING

Caithness Clay Shooting offer shooting lessons and multi lesson packages for everyone, from beginners to theexperienced shooter. All are welcome; including children, there’s a fantastic family friendly atmosphere whereeverybody is encouraged to participate. Everything required is included - guns, cartridges, clays and instruction. Participants will spend some time getting used to handling the gun and the safety behaviour required at the ground.

Explore the hidden delights of Caithness with geocaching, a real life outdoor treasure hunt! Pick up a GPS unit and discover abandoned piers, hidden beaches and the wonders that nature has to offer whilst searching high and low for treasure hidden away from the usual tourist destinations.

Geocaching is a real-world outdoor treasure hunting game where using GPS-enabled devices, you try to locate hidden containers called geocaches with prizes and more information about the location. This is also a great form of exercise for all ages; a full induction is available from the Natural Retreats team.

The Old Pulteney distillery in Wick is one of the most northerly distilleries on the Scottish mainland. It is a windswept location, where the uncompromising landscape of the Highlands meets the North Sea, and the waves crash against the granite walls of the harbour.

DISTILLERY TOUR

Tastings of drams are for over 18s only, proof of age may be required. No children under the age of 10 years old permitted on tours. Please be aware due the age of thebuilding and number of stairs it may be difficult to manoeuvre with pushchairs or for people with mobility problems.
