He Being Dead Yet Speaketh. A gathering of quotes by individual Christian men and women from the past - These are uploaded on the anniversary of their ‘falling asleep’ and intended to inspire us, as we read their words, to follow their good example. They are also meant to further encourage us to read more of their works.

John Wesley

Died

2nd March 1791

Do all the good you can By all the means you can In all the ways you can

In all the places you can At all the times you can

To all the people you can As long as you can.

Vice does not lose its character by becoming fashionable.

We are to bear with those we cannot amend, and to be content with offering them to God. This is true resignation. And since He has borne our infirmities, we may well bear those of each other for His sake.

And indeed, there is no little sin, because there is no little God to sin against.

The Bible knows nothing of solitary religion.

Though we cannot think alike may we not love alike? May we not be of one heart, though we are not of one opinion? Without all doubt, we may. Herein all the children of God may unite, notwithstanding these smaller differences.

Beware you are not swallowed up in books! An ounce of love is worth a pound of knowledge.

I judge all things only by the price they shall gain in eternity.

Beware you are not a fiery, persecuting enthusiast…  Never dream of forcing men into the ways of God… Use no constraint in matters of religion. Even those who are farthest out of the way never compel to come in by any other means than reason, truth, and love.

Above all sing spiritually. Have an eye to God in every word you sing. Aim at pleasing him more than yourself, or any other creature. In order to do this attend strictly to the sense of what you sing, and see that your heart is not carried away with the sound, but offered to God continually.

Give me 100 men who hate nothing but sin and love God with all their hearts and I will shake the world for Christ!

Whether we think of; or speak to, God, whether we act or suffer for him, all is prayer, when we have no other object than his love, and the desire of pleasing him.

God is the first object of our love: Its next office is, to bear the defects of others. And we should begin the practice of this amidst our own household.

Let your words be the genuine picture of your heart.

As a very little dust will disorder a clock, and the least sand will obscure our sight, so the least grain of sin which is upon the heart will hinder its right motion towards God.

The world is my parish.

Beware, of imagining you shall obtain the end without using the means conducive to it. God can give the end without any means at all; but you have no reason to think He will. Therefore constantly and carefully use all those means which He has appointed to be the ordinary channels of His grace.

Prayer continues in the desire of the heart, though the understanding be employed on outward things.

The general rule of interpreting Scripture is this: the literal sense of every text is to be taken, if it be not contrary to some other texts. But in that case, the obscure text is to be interpreted by those which speak more plainly.

He who governed the world before I was born shall take care of it likewise when I am dead. My part is to improve the present moment.

Bring me a worm that can comprehend a man, and then I will show you a man that can comprehend the Triune God.

Having, First, gained all you can, and, Secondly saved all you can, Then give all you can.

God grant that I may never live to be useless.

I learned more about Christianity from my mother than from all the theologians in England.

If you do not have the fruits, effects, or inseparable properties of faith, you do not have faith.

Sour godliness is the devil's religion.

Are you a man? Then you should have an human heart. But have you indeed? What is your heart made of? Is there no such principle as Compassion there? Do you never feel another's pain? Have you no Sympathy? No sense of human woe? No pity for the miserable?

Lord, I am no longer my own, but Yours. Put me to what You will, rank me with whom You will. Let be employed by You or laid aside for You, exalted for You or brought low by You. Let me have all things, let me have nothing, I freely and heartily yield all things to Your pleasure and disposal. And now, O glorious and blessed God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, You are mine and I am Yours. So be it. Amen.

Catch on fire and others will love to come watch you burn."

The longer I live, the larger allowances I make for human infirmities. I exact more from myself and less from others.

The best of all is, God is with us. Farewell!
