James was the fifth of twelve children born to John W. Moore and Nancy Bailey. James was born March 22, 1843, in Coffee County, Alabama.

While living in Coffee County, James joined company H of the 53d Alabama Infantry, Mounted Partisan Rangers, in 1862. He is listed as a private on roll 451. He enlisted Aug 18, 1862 in Elba, AL under Lt. R. Stratford. Command of his company then transferred to Lt. J. E. P. Flaurnoy in September of that year. He received $50 pay for serving from his date of enlistment up until Feb 8, 1863. The company reported December 29, 1864 to Capt. J. P. Dickenson.

The following are a brief synopsis of the exploits of the 53rd Alabama from extracts of the official war records. The fifty- third regiment of mounted infantry was organized in the fall of 1862, by the addition of several companies to Maj. T. F. Jenkins Battalion, which had already rendered gallant service at Shiloh. The regiment was first placed in Roddey’s brigade, and fought at Thompson’s station, Brentwood, Town Creek, and in the pursuit of Streight. The Company was on picketed duty at Dalton, GA in April 1864. When Roddey’s brigade was transferred to General Polk’s department, this regiment was detached and brigaded under General Hannon. Afterwards, under General Hagan in Wheeler’s cavalry corps, it took part in the perilous fighting all the way from Dalton to Atlanta. The 53rd participated in the daring raid of 1864 in Sherman’s rear, and captured 100 men and 1,500 beef cattle. The 53rd fought at Jonesboro and Resaca, continuing to harass the Federals in the Carolinas.
