It goes without saying that thechairman of the board of anynonprofit institution meets regularlywith the president and CEO to coverany manner of subjects, fromkeeping the lights on to planning anannual report such as this. Thoseconversations at Ravinia Festivalhave been about mission, mission, mission. We even print our missionon the top of every meeting agenda. The news that must first be reportedin this annual report is that Ravinia ispursuing its mission in every sense:We maintain our beautifullylandscaped and welcoming venue;we support the Chicago SymphonyOrchestra and grow audiences forclassical music; we immerse theworld’s most talented youngprofessionals in music study andperformance through Ravinia’sSteans Music Institute (RSMI), oursummer conservatory; and we returnmusic to the region’s public schoolsmost in need—all while exceedingour traditional program mix of 50percent classical to non-classicalevents in 2012. Of the 600,000music lovers who entered our park,we are pleased to announce that100,000 were CSO concertgoers,

and 40,000 attended recitals andchamber concerts.

This year Ravinia exceededboth its earned and contributedincome goals. The actual numbersare presented on the financial pagesof this report, but even before youget to those, you will find beautifulphotographs of our real stock-in-trade, 100 music events that featuredstars of every genre—unexpectedclassical virtuosos such as ukulelephenomenon Jake Shimabukuro andthe shape-shifting orchestra oftomorrow The Knights (who endedthe season with three concertsseparately featuring superstars ItzhakPerlman, Dawn Upshaw and Yo-YoMa that were broadcast livenationally on Performance Today) tolong-overdue pop/rock legends likeCarlos Santana and such darlings oftomorrow’s audiences as TV’s X-Factor judge and singer Demi Lovatoto multinational award-winningpianist Daniil Trifonov.

But at the center of it all, thegreat CSO amazed and delighted ina residency that reached out in alldirections, including twoperformances each of Mozart’soperas The Magic Flute andIdomeneo, led by our own tirelessMusic Director James Conlon, whohas extended his contract with usthrough 2014; a heavenlyperformance of Holst’s The Planets inconjunction with José FranciscoSalgado’s award-winning film andNASA astronomers sharingtelescopes on the lawn; fourgenerations of Broadway’s leadingladies in four separate concerts, including Idina Menzel’s lawn-packing performance that left anentire generation of Glee andWicked fans with the phrase “CSO”on their lips for the first time; andPatti LuPone’s gala pairing with

Patricia Racette that celebrated the50th anniversary of Ravinia’sinspired and inspiring Women’sBoard.

Of all the ways weacknowledged this anniversary ofRavinia’s “leading ladies,” we’remost proud of presenting 50 artistdebuts in recognition of their 50years. Some of the most magicalmoments occurred behind thescenes—particularly when an artistwho never played Ravinia beforeencountered our venue for the firsttime. They almost instinctivelyunderstand that Ravinia presents aunique mix of august history—anoutdoor Carnegie Hall worth allthose hours of practice—and good-natured (with nature being theoperative word) party. First-timers ranthe gamut from the hottest name injazz today, Esperanza Spalding, toa double-bill of R&B powerhousesSeal and Macy Gray to the“conductor of the year” Jaap vanZweden.

A MESSAGE FROM RAVINIA’S LEADERSHIP

Our reimagined use of theintimate 450-seat Bennett GordonHall (BGH) to present $10 classicalconcerts expanded this summer tomore than 30 events that featuredsuch local favorites as ragtime pianistReginald Robinson and violinistRachel Barton Pine as well as suchinternational stars as cellist ZuillBailey and pianist Awadagin Pratt. The Chicago Tribune took notice, declaring, “That’s an impressivelineup by any standard, and itincludes a hefty slate of bargain-priced, early-evening recitals byyoung classical musicians whosecareers can only benefit from theexposure they receive here.” We’vefurther expanded the BGH $10Classics series to feature a handful ofconcerts in the fall, winter andspring.

Of course the centerpiece ofthis series is the group ofperformances by participants inRSMI, which is preparing acelebration of its 25th anniversary in2013. Kevin Murphy enjoyed great

success in his first season as thedirector of our summerconservatory’s program for singers—joining Miriam Fried, who leads theprogram for piano and strings, andDavid Baker, who heads up theprogram for jazz. Each year, 60-70of the most talented young musicprofessionals from around the worldare awarded fully funded fellowshipsto participate in this completemusical immersion that includesworking one-on-one and in ensemblewith our esteemed faculty andperforming free preview concertsand public master classes with suchRavinia guest artists as Conlon, KiriTe Kanawa and ChristophEschenbach as well as performingfive popular, stand-alone concerts onthe BGH $10 Classics Series. Toensure the success of this program aswe head into its milestone year, weare in the midst of an endowmentcampaign aptly titled “Everything forthe Artist.” We hope you can supportthis worthy endeavor.

Keeping to its mission ofmaking the most of the 36 acres thatwe call home, Ravinia rebuilt andbeautified its North Priority ParkingLot this year, making potholes andpuddles a thing of the past. This isthe latest in a long line ofinfrastructure improvements over thepast decade that began with thebuilding of a new dining pavilionthat offers several different eatingopportunities from grab-and-go to sit-down dining, to mobility carts to helppatrons navigate the park onclassical music nights, to last year’sgrand opening of a grand entrancecomplete with an underpass to thecommuter lines that stop at our frontgates. And we continue to grow onour grounds and in the community.

As leaders of Ravinia Festival,we should expect to meet a few“Music Makers.” But we encounteredsomething this fall the likes of whichwe’ve never witnessed before, when

Ravinia Festival joined forces with theKohl Children’s Museum of GreaterChicago to expose youngsters tosome crucial principles behind musicthrough ordinary objects and ideasin an interactive exhibit called“Music Makers.” Young people notonly will learn how to make soundsand put them together in a pleasingmanner, but they will discover thatmusic can be found (and created!)everywhere. The entrance to theexhibit—which is expected to attractmore than 325,000 visitors allthrough the year—mimics Ravinia’siconic arch.

We already know from ourown education programs that reach75,000 people under the bannerREACH*TEACH*PLAY thatinteraction with music strengthensschool and community bonds, increases cross-curricularachievement and boosts confidence. In fact, one young girl at the exhibit’sopening was confident enough toinform Chicago piano legend andArtistic Director of Jazz at RaviniaRamsey Lewis that he was “doing itwrong” when he dared to improviseon an age-old childhood chestnut.

We’re not just putting youngminds to the artistic side of music, butalso to the business end of audiencedevelopment, and in 2012 weexpanded our Classical YouthInitiative that challenges high schoolstudents to use their own terms andtools to devise a multimedia

marketing approach to get theirpeers to experience a free CSOconcert at Ravinia. The high schoolthat has the most students attendthrough the course of the summerwins a $5,000 grant for its musicprograms. This year’s winner wasCentral High School in Burlington, IL.One major component of the kids’program is the annual Cannon Ball(pun intended) that has high schoolsfrom around the region meet at a pre-concert “hang out” beforeexperiencing the “1812” Overtureconcert with live cannon fire. Wedoubled the number of participants in2012 and will launch satelliteprograms in at least two other highschools next year.

It may be an artful stretch onthe term, but some of the most serious“music makers” we know are thetalented and determined members of

the Women’s Board of RaviniaFestival. They make the musichappen. With five decades ofinvaluable accomplishments undertheir belts—including our annual galafundraiser and our first foray intoeducation—this esteemed groupcelebrated its 50th anniversary notby resting on its laurels but bycreating a new student orchestra—the Circle Rockets—at Catalyst CircleRock Charter School in the Austinneighborhood. We salute ourcolleagues, led by Jeanne Denison inthis milestone year, for theirdedication and support of thefestival.

If Ravinia Festival had aMount Rushmore, surely StanleyFreehling’s face would be up there.Among his many accomplishments,Freehling started Ravinia’s sculpturecollection along with famed Chicago

artist Richard Hunt, who createdRavinia’s first artwork in the 1970s.Both men are Ravinia Festival LifeTrustees today. When Stan’s wifeJoan—a Ravinia legend in her ownright—passed away last year, hecommissioned his old friend Richardto create a practical piece of art forRavinia in her memory. The beautifulheart-motif bench was unveiled thissummer and sits for all to enjoyoutside the Freehling Room at theJohn D. Harza Building. As an addedsurprise, we commissioned a secondHunt work for the park—Beyond theFrame is Hunt’s first wall-hungsculpture—and dedicated it to Mr.Freehling himself. It now hangs in thePark View restaurant.

We close this message withtremendous thanks to all oursupporters—individuals andcorporations, including UBS, whichhas stepped up as Ravinia’s leadsponsor since 2004. Great thanksgoes to the entire volunteer force thatmakes up the Ravinia family, nowengaged in a thoughtful long-rangeplanning project that has examinedall aspects of our interaction withcustomers and our role in buildingaudiences for classical music. Wewill study the results of this work anddevelop plans that will shape Raviniafor years to come. Sure, we’re hardat work on building next summer’sseason, but at the same time we’realso thinking about “music makers”who may not even be born yet. Here’s to tomorrow.

SIGNS: SEALED AND DELIVERED FOR WOMEN’S BOARD 50THThis year in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Women’s Board of Ravinia Festival, the park not only honoredthe group’s anniversary, but spotlighted it with in-park signage. The park held over 150 banners, posters and othersignage that could be found throughout the festival. The Martin Theatre, one of our most prominent spots, is seen bythousands of patrons daily during the season and received much of the celebration’s focus. Upon entry through themain gate, patrons were greeted with two towering banners on either side of the theatre acknowledging theWomen’s Board’s 50 years and the 50 artist debuts made in tribute to the milestone. Also placed on the entrywalkway was a decal depicting a timeline of events of the last 50 years of the Women’s Board, from the first Gala tothe new Ravinia Chair Rental in 2012, managed by the Women’s Board. Finally, as patrons walked the stairs to theMartin Theatre, they were welcomed with a variety of posters coating the staircase. Each poster was a past winnerof the annual Women’s Board poster contest. Several years of posters could also be found hanging in both the Westand North Priority parking lots, allowing patrons to identify parking areas with different posters.

Classical music venues love an anniversary with entire programs builtaround the birth and death dates of major composers. So when theanniversary belongs to a group of people who are considered the heartand soul of the family, the celebrations really kick into gear. In 2012 wecelebrated the 50th anniversary of the Women’s Board of Ravinia Festival,a hands-on group of volunteers who have made an indelible mark onmost every aspect of the festival since the group’s formation in 1962.

The festivities began in May when the Women’s Board washonored by the Ravinia Festival Associates at the annual Music Mattersfundraising dinner and dance for its REACH*TEACH*PLAY educationwork. On June 2 the women assembled (some flying in from other statesjust for the occasion) for a private dinner—tables set on an elegantlydecorated pavilion stage—that included a performance by Highland Park’sMusic Theater Company and Welz Kauffman at the piano.

Ravinia celebrated the Women’s Board in the media throughout the year, beginning with surprise full-page adsannouncing the 50th anniversary in Michigan Avenue magazine. Elsewhere, Women’s Board members made up theaudience of the live broadcast of ABC’s Windy City Live, where Ramsey Lewis was the surprise guest. Three generations ofWomen’s Board members—Jeanne Denison, Susan Spears and Elizabeth Bergman—co-hosted a WFMT Mother’s Dayspecial, choosing classical programming inspired by their Ravinia memories over the years. The group was also featured inseveral published articles celebrating the anniversary, in addition to monthly features in our own Ravinia magazine.

The Women’s Board sponsored the August 5 Chicago Symphony Orchestra concert with Ann Hampton Callawayand the John Pizzarelli Quartet saluting Harold Arlen. The women hosted the headliners and members of the orchestra in apost-concert dinner.

Finally, the women were surprised at their annual meeting in October with a video tribute that featured interviewswith people instrumental to the group—including founding members—along with shout-outs from some of the great artistswho performed at Ravinia in this milestone year, among them Ann Hampton Callaway, Jim Belushi, Kiri Te Kanawa, LeonFleisher, Barbara Cook, Patricia Racette and Patti LuPone.

Since its founding in 1962, this dedicated and visionary group

of volunteers has become the biggest single contributor to North

America’s oldest and most diverse music festival, the not-for-profit Ravinia. They’ve started our education and communityprograms decades ago and continue to bring music to under-

served schools by starting “El Sistema” student orchestras. They run Ravinia Gifts and several fund-raisers to help sustain

classical music. They are the heart of Ravinia!

REACH*TEACH*PLAY LAUNCHES CIRCLE ROCKETS ORCHESTRAOn October 25 Ravinia launched a newafter-school orchestra under the banner ofSistema Ravinia at Catalyst Circle RockCharter School in the Austin neighborhoodof Chicago. Over 50 “Circle Rockets”students received their new musicalinstruments in a ceremony that includedtheir teachers, parents and families. The 8-to 12-year-old kids broke off intosectionals, were taught basic playingtechniques and some musical notes, andcame back together as one orchestra toperform their first official concert for theaudience. Based on the successful El

Sistemaorchestraleducationmodel devised in Venezuela, which is a system of total immersion in music study,Sistema Ravinia focuses on providing exceptional music training, creating afamily of musicians and fostering social development. Students in the programwill receive daily after-school ensemble and orchestral instruction in their choseninstrument, for at least 10 hours a week, including singing. The festival alreadysupports two student orchestras that were created at William G. HibbardElementary School in the Albany Park neighborhood in 2010 in conjunction withthe Women’s Board of Ravinia Festival and People’s Music School of Chicago.

Excitement resounds as the “Circle Rockets” strike achord with the newest members of the Ravinia family. See the students’ smiles glitter as brightly as their newinstruments at http://youtu.be/re5ZyyjQpDk

'Thinking is an art': A case for arts education

REACH*TEACH*PLAY: KAUFFMAN’S CASE FOR INGENUITY

November 02, 2012

It's been said that creativity is the currency of the 21st century. Once viewed merely as enrichment, the arts, we now know, are a core component of a quality education. We have an ideal opportunity to ensure that every Chicago Public School student receives a quality arts education from preschool through high school graduation. Through the leadership of Mayor Rahm Emanuel and CPS, with the support and commitment of our city's cultural community, the first-ever CPS Arts Education Plan was created to improve, expand and strategically coordinate arts education across the district. Research consistently shows that the arts leverage student achievement and development far beyond raising test scores in reading and math; and they instill the critical thinking, creativity and communication skills that our children need to succeed in today's workplace. Now leading the charge to put the arts back into classrooms, Ingenuity Incorporated, a Chicago-based arts learning initiative, created the first detailed map of arts resources in Chicago and was instrumental in helping CPS develop the new arts education plan. CPS hosted dozens of public meetings to take input from parents and students, teachers, principals and arts partners. An Advisory Committee of civic and education leadership analyzed the data, identified national best practices and strategies and drafted the plan's goals and recommendations. As one of many cultural institutions providing education programs to CPS, Ravinia Festival looks forward to working with Ingenuity to ensure that such opportunities are equitably distributed. Ravinia's Reach/Teach/Play programs span from elementary school orchestras to a jazz band made up of the best high-school players in the city. Our goal is not to create career musicians, but to foster an appreciation for the culture that defines us. We've seen firsthand how bringing music into the lives of students inspires confidence and creativity and even deepens connections to school, family and community. Through the new plan, the arts are elevated to a core subject. Students in every grade and at every school will experience visual art, music, dance and drama—with new high school graduation requirements to include all four forms. Every school will have at least one certified, dedicated art teacher. The plan increases professional development to support teachers and principals, and builds on the partnerships that already exist between our schools and cultural organizations such as Ravinia. This is a defining moment for arts education in Chicago, our opportunity to transform the kind of education our public school students receive, and to give them the foundation for success in school and throughout their lives. Through a comprehensive study of the arts, CPS students will get the opportunity

to develop into innovative thinkers capable of expressing themselves and contributing to the city's culture and economy. Thinking is an art. Welz Kauffman is president and CEO of Ravinia Festival and a board member of Ingenuity Incorporated.

Based on the Chicago PublicLibrary’s One Book, OneChicago, Ravinia’s One Score,One Chicago endeavors toengage the entire community in asingle musical masterpiece. The10th-anniversary selection in2012 was Holst’s The Planets, selected in recognition of theSolar System’s governing roletoday as in ancient civilizations, such as the Romans, who namedthe planets after their gods andgoddesses. The work wasperformed by the ChicagoSymphony Orchestra and thewomen of the Chicago SymphonyChorus under the baton of JohnAxelrod on a July 31 programthat also included GabrielaMontero performing Grieg’sPiano Concerto andimprovisations based onsuggestions from the audience. Inaddition to the permanent screensflanking the pavilion stage, thefestival also installed a temporarylarge screen on the north lawn for

this show, which featured a filmaccompaniment to The Planetscreated by astronomer and visualartist José Francisco Salgado.

Also that evening patronswere able to observe the stars aslocal astronomers were on handwith telescopes around the parkcatching spectacular glimpses ofthe heavens. This NASA-sponsored program includedtelescope observations of the sunprior to the concert and of themoon, Saturn, multi-coloreddouble stars, star clusters andnebulae at intermission and afterthe concert—combined withvideos, posters, banners andhands-on activities including thesounds of the sun as revealed bya radio telescope. Expanding its commitment to music education, Raviniaannounced its sponsorship of an interactive music-makingexhibit at the Kohl Children’s Museum of Greater Chicago, furthering Ravinia’s mission of exposing young people to music. On October 9 Chicago jazz legend Ramsey Lewis was on handto assist in promoting the launch by sharing his knowledge ofthe importance of music education as well as interacting withyoung exhibit-goers by performing musical selections andshowing them how to play the piano.

The hands-on “Music Makers” exhibit is one of 17permanent vignettes for children ages birth to 8 and is designedto help children discover how sound is created in a variety ofways; how to recognize different types of sounds and thephysical forces behind them; and how to manipulate melody, tempo and rhythm. The exhibit features such interactive activitiesas making melodies using bolts and wrenches; using soft-sculpture pegs to make a music box; moving musical notes on astaff to create a melody; feeling and seeing vibrations on stringand percussion instruments; layering melody, harmony andrhythm to create a symphony; beating drums and otherpercussion instruments in the Jam Room; and dancing andmoving to music while watching your movements make patternson a colorful video screen. Ravinia and Kohl Children’s Museumalso partner in the umbrella organizationDo North, along with Writers’ Theatre and Chicago BotanicGarden, helping to transform the northern suburbs into a culturaldestination. Ravinia and Kohl presidents Welz Kauffman andSheridan Turner spoke about the joint venture during theunveiling, and were captured enjoying the exhibit with theyoung “music makers” at http://youtu.be/3M1O2japygY.

Throughout its history, and particularly since the arrival of President andCEO Welz Kauffman, Ravinia Festival has proudly showcased the wealthof musical treasures created for that most American of genres, theBroadway musical. CSO audiences ask for music theater concerts atRavinia more than any other genre. This summer Ravinia hit the jackpot, shining the spotlight on four of Broadway’s brightest stars, each of whom

was featured as soloist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on fourmemorable evenings. For a special Fourth of July musical bash, Ashley Brown,

the star of the stage production of Mary Poppins, appropriately sang aninspiring all-American program of songs by Richard Rodgers, Jerome Kern,John Kander, Harold Arlen, Irving Berlin and others composed for theBroadway stage and Hollywood films—as the song goes, “from sea toshining sea”! Idina Menzel teamed up with composer/conductor MarvinHamlisch for a wide-ranging repertoire ranging from songs from roles shecreated in the landmark musicals Rent and Wicked to standards from the

Great American Songbook to an inspired rendition of Hamlisch’s own “The WayWe Were” on July 8. Ravinia favorite Patti LuPone, who has scored an impressive

series of triumphs in musicals both on Broadway (Anything Goes, Evita)and here at Ravinia (Gypsy, Annie Get Your Gun and a string of StephenSondheim-composed musicals), joined opera star Patricia Racette for a Gala program on July 21 celebrating“Leading Ladies” in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Women’s Board of Ravinia Festival. And 85-year-oldBroadway legend Barbara Cook, who created such iconic leading roles as Cunegonde in Candide, Marian theLibrarian in The Music Man and Amalia in She Loves Me, made her CSO debut with a July 15 program includingfavorites as well as less-familiar tunes by powerhouse composers Bernstein, Rodgers, Berlin, Gershwin, Kern,

Romberg, Sondheim and Weill. The stars of Broadway never shone more brightly on the Great White Way than they did this summer at Ravinia.

In an effort to bring awareness ofaccess to classical musicperformances to young people,Ravinia partnered with teens atHighland Park High School in thefall of 2010 to create the RaviniaStudent Advisory Board, whichcollaborated on three main ideasto promote classical music toyoung listeners in a programtitled Classical Youth Initiative.Nearly 600 students participatedthis year.

In their first year theyspearheaded the free lawn-attendance programfor all high schoolstudents with a validschool I.D. at allclassical concerts, asummer-long attendancecontest in which studentsgained points toward agrant for their school’smusic department, andcreated a special nighttitled “Cannon Ball,”which included a pre-concert tent event with free food, refreshments, games, prizes and an opportunity to gain double points for theattendance contest.

To encourage schools throughout Illinois toparticipate and better reward students who had totravel greater distances to get to the festival, theStudent Advisory Board in 2012 created a new pointsystem that takes into account the distance between thefestival and their high school. They also added asecond double-points night on the evening of the OneScore, One Chicago selection, Gustav Holst’s ThePlanets, and started an official Facebook page forhigh school students from all over Illinois to connect atwww.facebook.com/RaviniaCYI. Central High Schoolof Burlington, IL, took full advantage, bringing thehighest number of students from one of the farthestparticipating schools, on a double-points night. Foraccumulating the most points, Central High School willbe awarded a $5,000 grant graciously donated bythe Ravinia Associates, a group of young Chicago-

area professionals who volunteer to supportthe festival by raising funds, increasing

awareness of the festival’s programs and developing ayounger audience for classical music through thefestival’s REACH*TEACH*PLAY education programs. The first runner-up was Evanston Township, followed byHighland Park, New Trier and Stevenson high schools. The festival and the Ravinia Associates are currentlyworking on plans to expand the program in 2013.

“Being able to take the students to hear theCSO at Ravinia was an amazing highlight of our bandcamp week. It is something they still talk about and willremember beyond their high school careers,” saidCentral High School Director of Bands Jim Struyk. “Thegrant will be used to purchase new percussionequipment for our second-year percussion ensembleclass, and to help our Jazz Lab Band students travel toPeoria to perform at the Illinois All-State MusicConference. We will also be looking at bringing inguest artists and clinicians as we prepare for ourperformances in New York this April.”

RAVINIA LINKED IN TO SOCIAL MEDIA—PINTERESTED? THEN “LIKE” US.Here’s something to “Like.” Ravinia Festival has retooled itscommunications department to take advantage of the ever-changing opportunities to build audiences through social media. The festival hired its first full-time social media coordinator, PedroDeJesus, who is at work across all platforms with cleverconversation starters and rewarding contests. Ravinia was anearly adopter of each technological advance in interactivemarketing, and its promotion of classical music through socialmedia became a feature story on BBC World Report.

“In the era of social media, Ravinia gets to be its ownmedia and the message,” says Ravinia Director ofCommunications Nick Pullia, “using its staff and tools to tell itsstory the way it wants directly to its constituents instead of relyingon third-party mass media companies; best of all, our customerstalk to each other, and such peer-to-peer validation is priceless.”

Today’s communications department is focused on contentgeneration. Responding to market demands, the content beingcreated involves audio and video projects (55 last summer—havea look here), and two of Ravinia’s first efforts in this new arenahave each just been nominated for a regional Emmy Award forAchievement in a Single Spot Commercial.

AN ARTIST SHADOWS AN ARTIST: RICHARD HUNT AT WORK Story and photos by Russell Jenkins

Outside laughter and chasing could be heard cutting through the light breeze as children all across the adjacent parkplayed beneath great shadows. As I approached the address, a scruffy giant building, faint saw sounds and grindingbecame clearer. After a door buzz and a short pause, the welcoming face of Richard Hunt peered ’round the solid, weathered door to exuberantly greet me.

Entering his behemoth studio, I could barely hold conversation. My senses were ambushed from every angle asevery direction offered an interesting find. Sorted magazines, supplies and metal were piled and re-piled atop eachother. Cataloged nuts, screws and washers were placed next to band saws, grinders and hundreds of hammers, oxygen tanks with myriad blow torches just lying about as we walked through the rusty, dusty, jagged pathways. It wasclear this man, this great artist, had unfolded his life and passion between these walls.

With introductions well behind us, he gravitated back to work. And for the next several hours, I discovered hiscraft. The overall environment was drastically different from what I am used to as a 2-D artist. I surround myself withmore delicate tools such as fine-tipped pens and soft brushes, where his instruments are typically rigid, bulky andheavy. And in contrast, a good pen with a clean pad and a sturdy desk is all I need to create, whereas Richard needsthat echoingly large studio for his tanks, torches and even a crane to drag around half-inch thick sheets of metal. Thisrough, corroded space is far from clean and inspires thoughts of tetanus booster shots. Needless to say, neither artistcould manage in the other’s environment, and it wouldn’t take a fortune-teller to see that; one would only have tocompare the palms of our hands.

Richard is not a speedy artist, but he has a calculation about him. More times than not, I find he can’t fullyexplain in words how and why the art comes together for him. He gestures and waves while moving about the art.Perhaps it is even still a mystery to him, an enigmatic dance he does with each piece. Regardless, I find it incrediblypoetic.

Upon leaving this inspiring man and his unique studio, I received the same warm smile as when I arrived as astranger—though this time I understood it. It is the smile of a child—a child grinning back at life for allowing him tocreate and play these many long years in his own perfect park. And in the neighboring park, as the children play, theyneed only look up from the great shadows to see Richard’s life work smiling back at them.

See Richard Hunt’s works atRavinia Festival, whichpresents sculpture throughoutthe park. His work Beyondthe Frame hangs in the ParkView restaurant.

Creating a buzz when it was first used, the lawn screen hasbecome one of the most popular innovations with Raviniaaudiences. This past season marked the first time video of aMartin Theatre concert could be seen from the lawn.Traditionally, concerts inside the 850-seat venue have beenbroadcast as audio only, making the live video telecast onto thegiant lawn screen a truly unprecedented and groundbreakingevent.

The lawn screen was erected for a chamber recital bythe Zukerman ChamberPlayers, who performed works by Brahmsand Shostakovich. As withall lawn tickets for Martin Theatreshows, the price remained $10, and children and students stillreceived free admission as with all classical concerts.

An hour before the first downbeat, a small crowd hadalready gathered in front of the screen on the North Lawn, positioning their blankets and chairs so as not to miss any ofthe action. The lawn audience got the best of both worlds: thegrassy leisure of the park as well as front seats to the MartinTheatre stage. And let’s not forget the state-of-the-art outdoorsound system, which is only enhanced by the cicadas and birdsthat call Ravinia’s North Lawn home.

The lawn screen was set up for all concerts the week ofJune 25 to July 1, including performances by EsperanzaSpalding, Ramsey Lewis and Sergio Mendes, Glen Campbelland Ronnie Milsap, and A Far Cry with Jake Shimabukuro.

On the heels of 2011’s renovations, including the new grandentrance underpass, Ravinia completed for the 2012 seasonanother series of improvements to beautify and simplify theexperience of everyone who comes to the summer festival. While this summer’s weather may have at times beentorturous, the gates that annually welcome hundreds ofthousands of musicgoers were immunized against theelements with repairs, a new green finish, and the addition ofnew sliding gates to the North and South Priority parking lots.Significantly, the highly trafficked north lot was paved duringthe off-season following the similar successful renovation ofthe south lot. The north lot not only provides parking forRavinia staff and donors, but also is the parking space for theChicago Symphony Orchestra—when they are in residencyduring the height of the summer season—as well as thelocation where traveling artists load their equipment into thepavilion and park their busses. The paving of this lot providesfor the safer and more expedient movement of these

performers in and out of the festival every day and also provides a more predictable (and weather-resistant!) parkingexperience for our treasured patrons. We know from hard-earned experience that Chicagoland weather can turn at the dropof a hat, but Ravinia has once again striven to ensure that, no matter the conditions, there are no barriers to enjoying musicunder the summer stars.

YOU SAY GOODBYE, I SAY HELLO

Ravinia audiences enjoyed a bittersweet musical event on June 28 whenlegendary country star Glen Campbell made his belated Ravinia debut on aconcert that also featured Ronnie Milsap. The appearance was part of aGoodbye Tour for the Grammy Award-winning artist and Country Music Hallof Fame inductee, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s last year. Despitean outpouring of interest from the press and demands upon his time,Campbell graciously consented to a feature interview for Ravinia magazine.

He did not disappoint his legion of local fans, reprising his numerous greatest hits while including morerecent additions to his repertoire, and the Chicago Tribune cited the “tenderness, virtuosity, fortitudeand, ultimately, heart-wrenching poignancy [displayed] during the 76-year-old country pop star’s hour-long performance.” Ultimately it was a fine tribute to both Campbell and the festival that thelegendary superstar was able to add Ravinia to the impressive list of credits that characterizes hisremarkable career.

The not-for-profit Ravinia Festival has contributed $798,818 to its hometown of Highland Park in 2012. This is the fourthyear of a 10-year agreement through which the festival donates 5 percent of its annual gross ticket revenue to the city for itsuse as needed. The amount of the contribution to the city has increased each of the first four years of the program’s life, with$780,655 given in 2011, $758,000 in 2010 and $710,000 in 2009, for a total of more than $3 million to date.

“Ravinia Festival is key to the lives of so many Highland Park residents. It’s a place of first jobs and first dates andmore than a few favorite memories. It brings a variety of great music—classical, jazz, dance, children’s concerts—to ourown backyards, including the great Chicago Symphony Orchestra, giving families easy access to one of the world’s finestensembles. But it is also an important economic engine for our city,” said Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering. “Manymay not realize that though it is a not-for-profit, Ravinia pays for its city services, such as hiring our police officers to patroland protect not only the grounds but to manage traffic in the community on concert nights, thus supplementing salaries in away that helps us attract the best law enforcement personnel. Ravinia’s guests patronize our local businesses, and they paysales tax on food and souvenirs they purchase at the festival itself. This annual contribution is one more way Raviniaenhances not just the cultural but also the fiscal health of our community, and we are very appreciative.”

RAVINIA SUPPORTS HOMETOWN WITH NEARLY $800K CONTRIBUTION

RSMI OFFERS “EVERYTHING FOR THE ARTIST”Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute (RSMI) brought 61 fellows to the festival in 2012—16 cut their chops in the Program forJazz, 30 sets of hands flew in the Program for Piano and Strings, and 15 voices rang out in the Program for Singers inBennett Gordon Hall (BGH). The summer conservatory continued to be an international salon of talent with 16 countriesrepresented, including China, Honduras, Uzbekistan, Spain and Tunisia. The equally diverse and start-studded faculty gaveseven master classes throughout the season, and the institute presented 17 concerts between the three programs on thefestival grounds with several additional performances traveling beyond the institute’s home in the John D. Harza building. These concerts have become an integral part of the Ravinia’s newly inaugurated BGH $10 Classics series, with fiveconcerts in 2012 being a part of this prime-time concert series that began developing in 2011.

The RSMI-owned house adjacent to the park at 351 Iris Lane, acquired in 2009, was once again used by thedirectors of the Program for Piano and Strings and the Program for Singers during their tenures at the conservatory. Thisproperty not only allows the faculty to stay in close contact and proximity to the festival, but also gives their families theopportunity to visit during what is traditionally a professional musician’s off-season. Ravinia Festival has long created afamily-friendly atmosphere, and this extension by RSMI provides a level of care to its esteemed faculty to rival that which isafforded its fellows.

To ensure the continued success of RSMI, the festivalhas undertaken a five-year, $5 million “Everything for theArtist” fundraising campaign to grow the institute’s endowmentto $25 million by the 25th anniversary in 2013. Through theincredible support of many leaders in the Ravinia family, the2012 fiscal year ended with pledges on the books totaling justunder $4 million, almost 80 percent of the goal.

Once again, violinist Miriam Fried led a small groupof recent alumni on a spring concert tour, with stops at theIsabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston; TreetopsChamber Music Society in Stamford, CT; Merkin Concert Hallin New York City; Northern Illinois University in DeKalb; and atriumphant final performance back home at Ravinia’s ownBennett Gordon Hall. The tour also included a two-dayworkshop with Community MusicWorks in Providence, RI, anonprofit that strives to integrate chamber music into the livesof underserved youth.

Several alumni triumphed in major competitions around the world in 2012, led by soprano Janai Brugger (’11),who won both Placido Domingo’s Operalia competition and the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in 2012,and was seen at Ravinia in several performances with the CSO. Violinist Dami Kim (’12) won first prize at the JosephJoachim International Violin Competition Hannover. Violinist Tessa Lark (’07, ’08) won the Naumburg Violin Competition.
