CLOSE WIN FOR JPC AT CHANEL SHIELD This weekend students from John Paul College took part in the annual inter-school Catholic

Cultural Competition, the Chanel Shield. The team consisted of fifteen students, Maia Berryman-Kamp (y11), Ruby Carter (y12), Georgia Collins (y12), Gus Dube (y13), Ashleigh Hart (y12), Jessica Hawthorne (y13), Theresa McLean (y13), Lucy Pepper (y13), Oliver Schweizer (y12), Elsie Spiers (y13), Ella Sutherland (y13), Olivia Temm (y12), Matthew Veitch (y9), Orla Walsh (y10) and Adam Wong-Toi (y10).

The competition took place at Aquinas College in Tauranga. It began on Friday with a traditional Powhiri and Mass, and ended the following day at 12.30pm. During the course of the competition, students competed in a variety of speeches, Bible reading, drama and debating and concluded with a quiz based on the gospel of Matthew. It was, as usual a fierce competition with even fiercer camaraderie. As well as competing, the students made new friends and caught up with old friends too! At the end of the events, it was not clear who would win as the last few points were added; however we were delighted to realise that we had managed to win by just one point! In fact the team who came fifth was only five points behind us! Winners of the events were spread evenly amongst the five schools. For JPC our particular congratulations to Gus (Senior Bible Reading), Matthew (Junior Poetry) and Lucy (Senior Poetry) who all came first in their events and Olivia (Impromptu Speech), Orla (Junior Speech) and the drama team, consisting of Elsie, Gus, Olivia, Ashleigh, Ruby and Georgia, who all gained second place.

The team were supported by staff and parents including myself, Mr Bloomfield, Mrs Thurston, Indy, Mrs Veitch, and Mrs Hepi and Mr Walsh who both came along for the drama performances

Thank you to Mrs Thurston for her time and efforts. Particular thanks go to Mr Bloomfield for once again driving the school van, and for his constant support and assistance. Mrs K Bloomfield D.R.S

Kia ora from the Counsellors It’s shaping up to be a very busy term for us all at JPC. Two weeks ago we were fortunate to have Tessa Gray from Core Education, speak to our school community about cyber-safety issues for our young people. We have had a lot of positive feedback about this really informative presentation. If you missed it, or would like to revisit the information presented, here is the link from Tessa. http://bit.ly/JPCparents Tessa also sent a link to a NZ Herald article on the Dark Web, which she touched on during her presentation. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11898527 This is well worth a look, with some sound advice at the end for parents. While the cyber-safety message about personal responsibility in using the net safely is one that our students hear constantly at school, it is crucial that parents and caregivers also talk with their children about issues around this. Netsafe is a further helpful resource for parents. https://www.netsafe.org.nz/ Also coming up in the final week of this term (Tuesday, September 26th), JPC will be hosting an evening with Mike King, who will be tackling the very sensitive and topical issue of youth suicide. This is sure to be an outstanding presentation so please mark it on your calendars. Mike will also be speaking with the student body (Years 9-13) on the afternoon of the same day. More information and publicity will follow closer to the event but we do wish to reassure parents that we are mindful of the high levels of sensitivity around the issue of youth suicide. For this reason, we are happy to hear from you ahead of this presentation if you have questions or concerns about the content of the session. If you do not wish your son/daughter to attend, please let us know. Students who do not attend will have alternative supervision during this time. More information about this and other upcoming events/presentations will follow in the next newsletter. In the meantime, all the best to our senior students as they embark on their preliminary exams later this week. RUGBY 2017 The 15 aside season has finished for all of the JPC teams. It has been a building year and looks positive for the next few seasons ahead. The ability to form a 2nd XV has given all the boys game time which is invaluable as we look forward to next season. The 1st XV has been invited to play a tournament in Rotorua's sister city Beepu, Japan, in February 2018 and training will now switch to focus on that. We will also be doing some fundraising to ensure that the costs are kept down. Training will step up as we build towards that tournament. Last weekend we had a friendly match where we mixed the members of the 1st XV with the 2nd XV, U15's & U14's. It was a great hit out and showed that we will have depth and talent that will need to be nurtured and developed to remain competitive next season. Last week the year 7/8's played in a 7's tournament at the Rotorua International Stadium. They had a mixed day as the competition is now gaining momentum, and other schools are focusing on the 7's program. The teams enjoyed their day, with some close results. It was good to see members of the 1st XV and Senior Girls Rugby wanting to be involved with coaching and supporting the younger boys and girls. Below is a link to see some action shots of the day http://www.sportbop.co.nz/news--results/bop-sevens--results/ We congratulate Connor Humphries and Alec Johnson for making the final BOP U18's and Haydn Benge for the BOP U'16's. We wish them luck for their representative season ahead. Thank you to those who have supported rugby over the season and we look forward to 2018.
