THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Reading I: Isaiah 8: 23-9:3 The prophet speaks of Yahweh ending the darkness felt by the northern tribes and giving the Israelites a victory over the Assyrians. This triumph leads to “great joy” followed by the appearance of a “great light” meaning Christ.

Reading II: I Corinthians 1: 10-13, 17 Paul writes of rival groups existing in the community and urges them to strive for unity. Authentic preaching releases the power of the gospel and the Cross of Christ.

The Gospel: Matthew 4: 12-23, or 4: 12-17 Jesus begins His Galilean ministry by calling His first disciples. This is the closest He comes to founding a Church before the crucifixion. The immediacy of the response may have resulted from a severe compression of the whole story.

TThe Power of Prayer

Prayer to Mary Mother of life Within

O Mary, Mother of the Life Within, all life we entrust to you;

The life of every expectant mother and the child within her womb: The life of every human body, the life of every human soul;

The life of every newborn child and the life of all grown old.

You held the Lord to your own heart and drew Him so close in.

So, draw us now in all our needs, O Mother of the Life Within.

Amen.

Prayer for the Unborn

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to spare the life, of the

unborn child that I have spiritually adopted, whose life is in danger of

abortion. (Please offer this prayer daily for the unborn.)

Day of Prayer For the Legal Protection of

Unborn Children January 22nd

Prayer is the foundation of all that we do in defense of human life. Say a short prayer or blessing. Meditate or ask God's intercession. Devote some time to pray a Holy Hour, or commit to a novena or Stations of the Cross. Special prayers are called for those who have lost a child due to miscarriage, abortion or other cause.

The U.S. Bishops called for pro-life petitions at every Mass in the "Pastoral Plan for Pro-Life Activities." Our Word of Life series is an easy way to do this.

Every January, thousands of pilgrims travel to Washington to pray together for an end to abortion at the National Prayer Vigil for Life. If you can't join us, consider holding your own vigil for the unborn.

There's even a "Mass For Giving Thanks to God for the Gift of Human Life" in the new Roman Missal that can be used on the annual day of penance on January 22.

Everyone can find a way to praise and thank God for the gift of life and to ask for protection for each sacred human life.

Upcoming Feast Days

St. Angela Merici – Jan. 27th

St. Thomas Aquinas – Jan. 28th

St. John Bosco - Jan. 31st

A Student's Prayer by St. Thomas

Come, Holy Spirit, Divine Creator, true source of light and fountain of wisdom! Pour forth your brilliance upon my dense intellect, dissipate the darkness which covers me, that of sin and of ignorance. Grant me a penetrating mind to understand, a

retentive memory, method and ease in learning, the lucidity to comprehend, and abundant grace in

expressing myself. Guide the beginning of my work, direct its progress, and bring it to successful

completion. This I ask through Jesus Christ, true God and true man, living and reigning with You and the Father,

forever and ever.

Good luck to all students during midterm week.
