ShouldCatholicstithe?
Tithing(fromanoldEnglishwordmeaning“tenth”)isthepracticeofdonatingatenthofone’sincometotheChurch.SinceitsearliestdaystheChurchhastaughtthatallitsmembershavearesponsibilitytosup-portitsmissionandministry;tithingisashorthandwayofdescribingthatobligationinfinancialterms.
Goddoesnotmeasureoutblessingstous,butpoursthemoutuntilourcupsarefilledupandrunningover.Wearecalledtobejustasgenerouswhenweshareourblessingswithothers.Toawealthyperson,tenper-centmaybesoinsignificantthatheorsheiscalledtogivemore;conversely,apoorpersonmaybeabletoshareonlyalittle–butrecallhowJesuspraisedthepoorwidowwhoputonlytwocoppercoinsintothetempletreasuryinLuke21:1-4.
ShouldCatholicstithe?Certainlygivingtenpercentofone’sincometotheChurchorotherworthycausesisagoodstart.Butthemostimportantquestionisthis:Whatarewedoingwiththeotherninetypercent?AllofourblessingsfromGodaregiventousasblessingstothecommunity.Weneedtotakestockofhowweuseallourresourcesnotonlyforourowngoodbutforthecommongood.Thisdoesn’tmeanthatwehavetogiveeverythingawayandembracevoluntarypoverty,butitdoesmeanthatwehavetoconsiderthatthewayweuseour“personal”resourceshasanimpactonthecommunity.
AllChristiansarecalledtobegoodstewardsofourGod-givengifts.Thesearenotmerelymonetary–wearealsoblessedwithtimeandenergyandtheuniquetalentsthatGodhasentrustedtoeachoneofus.Itisnotonlythepercentageortheamountofourfinancialcontributionthatmatters;itisthewaythatweuseallofourgifts–ourtime,ourtalent,andalsoourtreasure–tobuildupthekingdomofGod. Ourparishoffersseveralwaysforyoutocontributeyourtime,talentandtreasure;weofferthetraditionalweeklycollectionenvelopesbutalsoofferonlinegiving(whichyoucanregisterforbyvisitingourwebsite)and/ortheopportunitytoshareyourtimeandtalentwithourmanyministries.Ifyouarenotcurrentlyus-ingenvelopesoronlinegivingandwishtodoso,contacttheparishofficeandwecanhelpyougetstarted. Ifyouarecurrentlyusingenvelopesandgivingonaregularbasis,wethankyou!Weappreciateyourcom-mitmenttotheparishandtoyourfaith.Yourcontinuedsupporthasallowedustocreateabudgetforop-erationalexpensesandemergencies.Perhapsyoumightconsiderincreasingyourweeklyoffering.Withanagingfacilityandheavydebtforthenewchurchandrepairs,ourneedsaremany.Ifyouareinterestedindiscussingwaystoincreaseyourcontributions,contacttheparishoffice.
