Volume 43 Number 1
Spring 2016
From the President’s
Desk…..
The New John Marshall opened on time
in August 2015. Arriving students were
welcomed to the first day with a greeting
line outside the main entrance (called a
clap in), consisting of teachers, alumni
and local residents. Over 1,500 students
came in that day to a school built for
1,220. Since then, the enrollment has
dropped to about 1,300. The school was
dedicated on Thursday September 24,
2015. The School Board and many Local
and State Politicians were there. That
evening, there was an open house for the
neighborhood. On Saturday September
26, 2015, there was an Alumni Open
House attended by about 1,500.
One thing is for sure, this is NOT the old
John Marshall. Yes, they have included
many reminders of the old JMHS. A lot
of the exterior stonework from the old
building is visible. Most Alumni thought
the new school was beautiful. A number
of alumni said they wished we had a
school like this when we attended. I did
unfortunately receive several E-mails
from Alumni, telling me that they would
NEVER go through the new school, be-
cause they want to remember it as it was.
I hope they reconsider.
The most popular areas of the new
school with Alumni were the Alumni
Hallway and the Alumni Plaza. Many
Alumni sat in the plaza for quite awhile,
looking at the hundreds of pavers with
names of friends or teachers that are
there. We will have installed dozens
more pavers by this spring, and still have
room for more. The Alumni Hallway is
also the entrance to the main gym. The
Hallway contains seven trophy cases and
plaques of seventy plus JMHS Hall of
Fame Inductees. Several of the old build-
ing’s features are incorporated in this
area. The gym is very attractive with the
large IMA symbol at center court. All
hallways in the school are wide and col-
orful. Most of the classrooms are bigger
and impressive. Each room even has its
own temperature control.
I hope many more of you can stop in and
see the new school at any future events
The football field has been reseeded and
fencing and cleanup are scheduled for
completion by September 2016. As of
this printing, no new stands are sched-
uled. We do plan for an Alumni night at
the First JMHS Home Game. Please
watch our web page for details.

last year Enough funds were donated to
cover our newsletter and operating funds
for 2015.

2015 Newsletter Issues
Last year’s newsletter mailing proved to
be ‘daunting”. There were duplicates,
misprints and blanks, jammed machines
and we think many of the 440— zip
codes were not delivered..
So, we’ve made some changes this
year—fewer pages and reunions being
announced within the Where Are They
Now section.
Also- households with multiple gradu-
ates ‘living’ at that residence should only
be receiving one copy of the newsletter..
Please submit current address for an
individual copy.

Tiffiany James, the principal of
JMH at Shuler, assumed her new
position last fall as 11th and 12th
Grade Principal. Seven of her 17
years of service as an educator have
been with CMSD. Currently a doc-
toral candidate, Ms. James remains
committed to strengthening the part-
nerships she has already nurtured in the John Marshall
community. She has provided some continuity for students
who have now “returned” for the first time to W. 140th and
for those who attended the 9th grade academy at Haw-
thorne. School culture is quite different - there’s a need for
flexibility and dealing with class sizes. Students used to
work on an 8 period day, but now work in 4 blocks a day,
each at 86 minutes and on an A/B day schedule where 8
subjects are covered over 2 days for a semester.
Sara Kidner has brought three years
of principal experience at Success
Tech to the John Marshall School of
Civic and Business Leadership. Pre-
viously, she designed the curriculum
for the national Cristo Rey Network
of Schools served locally at Saint
Martin de Porres High School as its
Work Study Director, training stu-
dents in business internships at over 140 companies in
Cleveland. You can follow her on twitter @sarakidner and
visit the coffee shop her students will be opening on cam-
pus along with a student-run credit union. She is looking
forward to “lots of service-learning, mentors, shadowing,
and civic and business leaders helping present curriculum
and career paths” during the school day. Her office will
coordinate all the campus-wide community engagement
and communication
(Continued on page 3)
Page 3 John Marshall Alumni Association News Volume 43, No. 1
Chelsey Cook will be coordinating
students from her school to manage
the website and social media for at
least her school, which is the John
Marshall School of Information
Technology (IT). Cook previously
served as STEM Magnet Coordina-
tor for the San Antonio district. Inte-
grating her science teaching back-
ground; she planned and implemented the Code HS pro-
gram and earned recognition as not only the second largest,
but among the best in the nation. The School of IT will fo-
cus on computer science: software knowledge, “basic cod-
ing for things like phone apps and websites” and
“bioinformatics, where students will learn about sequenc-
ing our genome.” Snap Lab has been offered as an extra-
curricular where students will work with representatives
from the Cleveland Museum of Art’s west side satellite,
Transformer Station, to learn about visual literacy by using
photography apps. They are already partnering with NASA
and Hyland Software for more enrichment and career
awareness.
(Continued from page 2) Timothy Primus has brought 10
years of experience as a Technology
Coordinator and Engineering teacher
to his new position as Principal of
John Marshall School of Engineer-
ing. Mr. Primus previously served
the Durham Public School District in
North Carolina as Assistant Principal before joining the
Aspiring Principal Program at CMSD where he was as-
signed to New Tech East.
For the School of Engineering, students will take part in
community service projects. The Engineering art teacher
will be working with teachers/students from Max Hayes to
create art that can be displayed throughout the district.”

Foreign
Exchange Students at
JMH For 4 years, Anna Langley and her
husband have opened their home
to foreign exchange students from
all over the globe. This past year
they had 2 students – Maggie from
China and Sophie from Germany. The Langleys chose to move
to West Park and close to John Marshall, because the school has
been so welcoming and offers ‘real American high school expe-
rience. Langley is the regional coordinator for Academic Year
in America (AYA) and is glad the CMSD and JMH have been
willing to open their doors to the program. the exchange students
get to experience America, learn a new culture, advance their
English skills, and make new friends across cultures. Host fami-
lies are able to choose a carefully screened student and they must
provide their student, for either five or 10 months. with two
meals a day and a place to sleep and study. Host families can
claim a charitable tax deduction for hosting a student. AYA is
sponsored by the American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS)
Foundation, founded in 1967 by the late Senator Robert F. Ken-
nedy. To learn more, call Anna Langley at 216.376.9933 or
email her at [email protected]

Sports Update!
For the 2015 school year trophies, were received in the follow-
ing sports: COED Golf—2nd place, COED Soccer—2nd place,
Girl’s Volleyball—2nd place, and Tennis—1st place! Con-
grats to all! So far for this year 2015-2016, the Girl’s Swim
team finished 2nd in the city and the Boy’s finished 3rd.. Wres-
tlers Keen Nieves, Mitchell Topkins and Donald Paulton fin-
ished 2nd in their classes. This year’s foreign exchange student,
Dean Salle, a sophomore, broke the 500 meter freestyle record
with a time of 4 minutes 52 seconds.
On February 24, 2016, JMH hosted its first tournament basket-
ball game—round one. The boys faced Valley Forge and for 3
quarters held the lead by 3 points. However the final score was
Valley Forge 75, JMH 66. It was a good game with a fairly
good crowd in attendance.
Also on that night, AD Joe Gilbert, presented our Super Bowl
Trophy. This trophy was given to all high schools which had a
graduate participate in a Super Bowl over the last 50 years. Our
representative was Tom Stincic 1/65, who played for the Dallas
Cowboys in two Super Bowls, V and winning in VI..
Many Personnel Changes!
Last June several teachers retired, moved out of state, or were
reassigned due to the new design of the educational program at
John Marshall. Those retiring were: Robert Fast—Math teach-
er and JMH 78, Dan McMillan—Computer and JMH 72, An-
drea Longauer and Jeffrica Pollard. Brenda Petty-Brown
remarried and moved out of state . Thank you for being an inte-
gral part of the JMH community. To all and those reassigned,
you ARE part of our JMH family and hopefully we will contin-
ue to hear of your adventures!

Alumni Update
Open House Raffle Winners Congratulations to Linda (Bohay) Cimo, 6/69 and Louise
Vertal, 1/65. They both won the blankets with the JMH photos
of ‘OUR’ building for making a donation. Louise donated hers
back to us for another raffle. Also, a Special Thank you to
Louise for donating a laptop to us in a major time of need! Obituary and Military Research
Andy Mathews, former Alumni President, has remained active
with the Alumni Association He diligently searches the obits
daily. If a name sounds familiar, he confirms whether or not that
person was a JMH grad, parent or family member. Much of the
time he does find a connection, which helps us find other lost
members. When reporting a death, please provide an obit, the
link from the newspaper it was found or submit a funeral card or
funeral program. By the way, we hope to have a symbol supplied
to the Plain Dealer soon, so that JMH grads can have it included
in the obits as West Tech and other schools have done for years.
Andy has also been compiling a list of all who have served in the
military. We do have a WWII plaque for those who gave their
lives during that conflict. However, no recognition has been cre-
ated (yet) for those who died or were POW in Korea, Vietnam, or
Iraq/Afghanistan, but we do have several names. Unfortunately
we know there may be some others. Occasionally we come
across one or two - but YOUR assistance would be appreciated.
We would like to honor those heroes soon. Please don't forget to
submit those who served and survived - we'd like their names,
class year, branch, rank, assignment and any recognitions re-
ceived. Submit to our PO BOX 16678, Rocky River OH 44116
-0678 or email to [email protected].

‘OUR’ John Marshall is
gone, but the new JMHS
will incorporate several of
its architectural elements. A
new feature, the Alumni
Plaza, will be located on the Viola St. side,
near the student entrance. Several original
granite steps will provide three rows of seat-
ing, with rows of red brick pavers inter-
spersed between them.
You can leave your mark and become a per-
manent part of the new school. This is a
great opportunity to pay tribute to a past
JMHS graduate, a teacher, yourself, or your
family. Red pavers will be deeply engraved
with your name and class year, with lettering
painted black. Funds raised by the sale will
go to the John Marshall Endowment fund,
which is exclusively used for JMHS student
scholarships.
Please PRINT CLEARLY! ONLY 14 characters per line
(Spaces and punctuation are considered characters)
Design will automatically be centered.
Please NO POLITICAL or IMPROPER MESSAGES
For additional pavers, please duplicate form.

VERY IMPORTANT!
If you wish to receive a newsletter from us—you must keep
your address current with us. Please be sure to let us know
when and where you move.
PLEASE REMEMBER,
WE NEVER SHARE your information with anyone,
EXCEPT REUNION COMMITTEES when that time comes!
Please Help Us Update our Records! We strive to keep our database up-to-date so that we can provide addresses to
your reunion committees and keep the communication lines open with all alum-
ni. If you have friends or relatives who graduated from Marshall please and
they are not receiving our Newsletter, it’s likely that we don’t have their current
address. Please spend a few moments to let us know of a name change and/or
their location. One of the most difficult and time consuming tasks for any reun-
ion committee is trying to find missing classmates. Please let us know when
and where you move in order to keep our costs down—the Post Office charges
us FIRST CLASS RATES on returns and forwards for a limited time.
You can always email us at [email protected] or call us at
(440) 356-0249. We want to hear from you!

porting John Marshall High School, its faculty, students and alumni. We promote,
finance, organize and participate in functions and events that contribute to the core
values of education both academically and socially. We draw on our Alumni for
