It is said that there are two thingscertain to happen in life; those beingdeath and taxes. Whilst none of us canlive forever, we can specify what wewant to happen to our property andassets when we die.

A Will is a legal document thatensures your assets; home, money, business, personal belongings are dealtwith just as you would like after yourdeath. A Will also allows you to decidewho will be in charge of your estatewhen you die; these people are knownas your Executors. Executors collectin everything that you may own anddistribute it exactly as you havedecided.

If you die without a Will theGovernment has a laid down set of ruleswhich will automatically apply known asthe Intestacy provisions. Theseprovisions set out a ‘pecking order’ as towho will be in charge of your estate andthey decide how your assets are sharedout between your family. The Intestacyprovisions don't always distribute yourestate as you would like - the provisionsDON'T state that everything you own willpass to your spouse after death. If youhave lived with a Partner, regardless ofhow long, that Partner is notautomatically entitled to inherit fromyou; your assets will pass to your family, leaving your Partner having to takeredress through the Courts for financialprovision from your estate. Regardlessof your relationship with your family,

under the Intestacy provisions they willstill be able to benefit from your estate, unless you make a Will directing yourassets to your chosen beneficiaries.

A Will not only ensures that yourassets pass onto the people that youwish to benefit but it can also be a toolto mitigate inheritance tax; to ensurepart of your home is protected from carehome fees and to protect children andtheir inheritance should you have re-married - as said we know that there areonly two things that are certain in life...

I have been ordained as a minister for34 years after my initial work as a civilengineer working on flood protectionschemes on the River Severn. My lastjob was to design a fish pass forsalmon to surmount the weir atShrewsbury. It was constructed after Ileft and it was only when I saw JohnnyMorris with a water bailiff at the weiron a television trip down the Severn, that I found out my design worked!

After 16 years in parish ministry I

took up a full time role as chaplain atKing’s Mill Hospital. I really enjoyedworking within the hospitalenvironment and working inpartnership with staff in caring forpatients and their relatives.

On May 1st this year, I began mynew role as Hospice Chaplain. I havereally enjoyed getting to know thestaff and volunteers who work at thehospice, and spending time with DayCare and In-Care patients as well asmeeting their friends and families.

People often say to me as theiropening words ‘I’m not religious’. I’mpleased to say that for me listening toa person’s story is far more importantthan talking about religion. If faith isimportant for the person, then I amvery much at home talking on thatlevel. However, what is often the caseis that faith becomes a struggle intimes of illness both for the patientand for their nearest and dearest. WhatI like is when they tell me as it is and

not how they think it should be.I am supported in my work by a team

of Chaplaincy volunteers. We are hereto care by offering friendship, alistening ear, a shoulder to lean on,counselling and prayer, whichever ismost appropriate for the individual. Weare available for everyone – staff, volunteers, patients and their friendsand families – of any faith, or of none.

Outside work I enjoy being agranddad, with all my three childrenhaving their own families. They vary inage from 11 down to newly born. Mywife and I live on the edge ofDerbyshire and walking in the countrywith my two collie dogs is a source ofgreat refreshment to me. For some golfis ‘a good walk spoiled’; for me it is amost enjoyably challenging game withmy ambition to play better.

Back at the hospice and contrary tocommon misconceptions, I am notshocked by anything I am told. I haveso often found that talking about ourtroubles is a way of putting down someof the heavy burdens we carry. I amonly too glad to support people inwhatever way I can.

In 1993, an article in the hospicenewsletter about an unusual fundraisingproject in South Africa prompted me andfellow members of the Mansfield LionessClub to do something similar for JohnEastwood Hospice.

The project loomed large, especiallywhen we made a list of all therequirements, including a Christmas tree, cable, bulb holders and lots of 25 wattbulbs. Fortunately we had fantasticsupport from local companies whodonated everything we needed, and withthe considerable help of volunteers thefirst Tree of Light was erected anddressed, raising a magnificent £1,840.

The first few years were verychallenging as we dealt with unforeseenproblems caused by winter weatherconditions, and even stolen bulbs. Wewere often to be found replacing asmany bulbs as we could reach in snowand icy conditions!

We held many fundraising events in1999 so that we could celebrate theMillennium with a complete set ofmodern lights, which were relativelymaintenance free. Then in 2011, a

legacy enabled us to move furtherwith the times and buy state of theart LED lights.

Along the way, the Mansfield LionessClub disbanded after several years offundraising for local worthy causes. Some of us then decided to continuededicated fundraising for the hospiceand became appropriately known asSHINE.

The lighting ceremony has changedconsiderably over the years, developingfrom a small group of people attending achaplain-led service at the hospice to avery busy event at the Queen ElizabethSchool Hall. The first event was attendedby Denise Nolan who was appearing inpantomime in Mansfield followed byFreddy ‘Parrot Face’ Davies, Sooty andChris Gascoyne. However when itbecame apparent that thesignificance of the tree was beinglost because of their presence, wedecided to keep the ceremony simpleand no longer invite a celebrity guest. The format changes very little but thehighlight for me is a poem writtenespecially for us by Gail Chettle that

sums up the event so beautifully. Some years ago we created the Tree of

Remembrance, which enables sponsorsto write a personal message on a tagand attach it to our symbolic tree, whichstands in the hospice reception. This hasproved very popular with bereavedfamilies.

The Tree of Light began as afundraising event and has raisedover £100,000. (Despiteinflation a bulb can stillbe sponsored for just£10!) However, it hasbecome much more.It is a way ofrememberingthose we have

loved and lost at a very special time ofyear. Indeed the vast majority ofdonations are in memory of a loved one– the gift you cannot give.

We are very grateful to CollisEngineering who arrange delivery ofthe tree and erect and dress it for us,and to Altitude Access for the loan of

a cherry picker. We hope that the tree will remain a

symbol of light and hope for many yearsto come, and that it will continue tobring comfort to us all.

(SHINE is a very small group and wealways welcome offers of help, particularly at the lighting ceremony.)

The Christmas Fayre raised themagnificent total of £6,500.50 in 2½

hours! Thanks to the volunteers, everyone who came and to those whodonated raffle and tombola prizes,

goods to sell and to those who bakedscrumptious goodies for our cake stall. We couldn’t have done it without you.

16-year old volunteerSarah Miles has beennamed as the overallwinner of theNottinghamshireOutstandingAchievement 4uthAwards for 2013.

65 young people in the county hadbeen nominated and Sarah was one ofseven teenagers who were named districtwinners in the awards.

Sarah was picked as the overall winnerin recognition of her caring for her Dadbefore he died in 2011 and being a carerfor her Mum since 2010.

She is also actively involved with theAshwood Centre in Kirkby-in-Ashfieldand was nominated for the award by theGenerations Project Co-ordinator there.

We first met Sarah at the hospicewhen she was a regular visitor alongwith mum Sharon and brother Mark tovisit her dad Peter.

Sadly Peter died but Sarah was so

inspired by the care and compassionshown not just to her Dad but to all thefamily that she wanted to help usmaintain our services, and in the lasttwo years she has been very busyfundraising for both the Hospice Trustand Cancer Relief Macmillan.

Sarah had to wait for her 16thbirthday before she could officially joinour voluntary staff and work in thehospice, but in the meantime she’shelped at hospice events, donated raffleprizes and made wonderful cakes for usto sell.

I was privileged to be invited to joinSarah at the awards ceremony atCounty Hall West Bridgford and alongwith her family felt very proud anddelighted when she was announced asoverall winner.

Sarah was described by the Chairmanof Notts. County Council as a trulyinspirational young lady. We think sotoo!

For the third year running, a 15 strongCommunity Action Team from NatWestspent a day at the hospice. Theyworked extremely hard andenthusiastically in the gardens andtidying the minibus garage. Theirperennial motto of ‘no job too big ortoo small and nothing’s too muchtrouble’ was very evident as they allgot stuck in with great enthusiasm andgood humour.

Another fantastic example ofcommunity support, for which weconvey our sincere gratitude.

The rays of sunlight represent thewhole community of patients withinthe hospice.

The single ray symbolises eachpatient as an individual, whilst at thesame time being a member of a largercommunity - the hospice.

The sun itself symbolises life anddeath. Just as each day has a dawnand dusk, so does human life.

The circle in the centre of the sunrepresents the fellowship of thehospice – a philosophy central to theprinciple of the hospice movement.

The hand symbolises the Hospiceitself - a caring and loving community.

new bus station in Mansfield will have amajor impact on custom.

Day care is offered to those who wouldbenefit from hospice services without theneed for admission. Those attending arecollected from home and brought to thehospice by our voluntary drivers in theircars or in the hospice minibus. A typicalday might involve a medical or nursingreview, complementary therapies andsocial activities including art and craftwork. A programme of outings andentertainment is planned at thebeginning of the year and will invariablyinclude trips on the St John’s AmbulanceCrusader on the River Trent and publunches.

Day care also offers respite to thecarers.

As we reflect positively on last year, weface a major challenge in the coming yearwhen the hospice roof will be completelyreplaced. We shall work closely with theappointed company to ensure minimumdisruption for our patients and theirvisitors whilst work is in progress, and willrely even more on the unfailing generosityof individuals, businesses, schools andorganisations in our community to enableus to fund the project as well as meetingour many commitments.

Unfortunately due to the timing of thework, for health and safety reasons weare unable to hold our annual summerGarden Party. Not only is this a majorfundraising event for us, but is also anopportunity for us to welcome thecommunity at large into our hospice sothey can see our beautiful building andgardens, which are so important to ourpatients and their families.

The project is due for completion inlate autumn.

I would like to take the opportunity tothank my fellow trustees for theircontinued support and our Hospice Truststaff and volunteers for their hard workand dedication. We continue to workclosely with our NHS colleagues tosupport specialist palliative care services, and although our roles are many andvaried, we are all committed to doing allwe can to enhance the quality of life forour patients and their families, and lookforward to doing so in the coming year.

Once again we report on a year ofprogress and development, withsignificant changes along the way.

In May we were delighted to welcometwo new trustees, Helen Gregory andBrian Stopford who both bring a wealthof business knowledge and experience tothe Board.

We were sorry to say goodbye totrustee Margaret Mackay who retired atour AGM in November having served themaximum term of office of nine years.Margaret continues to support us in herrole of Vice President.

Portland College was the venue forafternoon tea in June to celebrate our20th anniversary. It was a wonderfuloccasion shared by staff and volunteers, support group members, trustees and vicepresidents. Special guests Mary and DonBrown, two of the founder trustees tookeveryone on a trip down memory lane asthey recalled the early days of thehospice appeal and negotiations with theNHS, which resulted in the wonderful andmost successful partnership thatcontinues today.

Long service awards were presented toacknowledge 5, 10, 15 and 20 yearsservice of staff and volunteers. Thetremendous commitment of our supportgroups who have been raising funds inthe community for over 25 years was alsoacknowledged.

Portland College is also the venue forour three annual commemorationservices, when we are joined by familiesand friends of those who have died toremember their loved ones. These servicesare an important part of the care that isextended to the bereaved.

A special carers’ day was held in Juneto mark National Carers’ Week. Carers wereinvited to spend the day at the hospiceand had an opportunity to have lunch, doart and craft work, have complementarytherapies including aromatherapymassage, reflexology and hand massage, and manicures.

We are very fortunate to have a patient/ carer support nurse who works withcarers and the bereaved, offering one-to-one support and support groupsmeetings.

‘Transforming Community Services’ wasa major reform and had a huge impact onhospice services. Hospice at home ceasedto be a separate service in Septemberwhen it integrated with the Macmillanteam to form the Community SpecialistPalliative Care Service.

We were sorry to say goodbye to DeniseBircumshaw, our Matron for over 10 yearswho left to take up a new post at KingsMill Hospital, to Pat Grundy who retiredfrom her post as Macmillan Nurse held forover 20 years and to Canon Reverend PaulBentley, Hospice Chaplain who is nowAssociate Priest at St Lawrence’s Churchin Mansfield.

All made a significant contribution tospecialist palliative care services in thehospice and in the community.

We wish them all well and look forwardto welcoming new Chaplain, ReverendJohn Wood and Emma Roberts, new Headof Service.

We were delighted to welcome manyvisitors to our hospice fundraising events. The Spring Fayre, the Garden Party andthe Christmas Fayre raised themagnificent sum of £16,000.

We are proud to continue toacknowledge the wonderful commitmentof our voluntary staff. Their hard workand dedication enables us to supporthospice services in many different ways. The concept of volunteering has changeddramatically over the years andincreasingly people from all age groupsand from all walks of life apply to workwith us. I’m delighted to report that wehave again welcomed a significantnumber of young people to our team.Their time with us may be limited but itproves to be invaluable experience fortheir future and both staff and patientsare delighted to work alongside them.

Fundraisers in the community haveagain been very active on our behalf andwe never cease to be amazed by theirefforts on our behalf as they undertakesome great and rather unusual challenges.
