Our fall 2009 enrollment has blown away all the estimates! Over 7000 students…7024 to be exact. No wonder everyone was busy and the halls are full. This is the largest enrollment we have ever had. Last fall we were at 6167 so we’ve had a 14% increase. Our credit hours are at 63156. That is up 7%

from last fall. These numbers are unbelievable. I never really thought I’d see the day we went over 7000. Everything is up

from last fall…students taking online classes are up 47%, minority enrollment is up 14%, males are up 9%, females up 18%, international up 55%, baccalaureate up 12%, career up 7%, student from out local high schools up 11%, etc., etc. I

wanted to give a massive "thanks" to everyone in the Student Services area for all of their work this past 5 months with the multitude of students that have enrolled. This is an unprecedented moment that might not happen again. The

amount of students that had to be dealt with was staggering but everyone came through with flying colors. Of the 2009

in-district graduating seniors, 48% are attending John A. Logan College, highlighted by Crab Orchard’s 2009

graduating class with 71% of their seniors attending John A. Logan College along with Carterville's 70% of their senior class. Our students from Illinois come from 483 different high schools within the state. Remember that if there is

The Student Success Center started the 2009-2010 academic year off with exciting activities during the first two weeks of

the semester. On August 24th and 25th, we hosted our annual Open House to highlight support services: Disability Support

Services, Tutoring, TRIO Student Support Services, and Retention Services. Many students and staff stopped by to learn about our programs, sign up for door prizes, and to

enjoy refreshments. Presentations were also made to approximately six classes of students. Many students signed up for tutoring, and appointments were made for TRIO and

DSS. It was an exciting, yet tiring, time for SSC staff.On Monday, August 31, 2009, we hosted a motivational

speaker. Jeff McGoy, a local talent, presented an inspiring and entertaining presentation called “Get Ready World:

Here I Come!” Those in attendance gained valuable insights to equip them for staying motivated during the year ahead.The math and biology help rooms opened for business on Wednesday August 26th with limited access, and with full

access that began on Monday, August 31st. Individual tutoring also began on the 31st , in our newly remodeled tutor room. Many slots are full and some students are

already on waiting lists.TRIO is in the process of identifying and selecting participants

for the upcoming year. Intakes are being conducted daily, and open slots are filling quickly. The selection process is

going on through October 31, 2009.The Staff in the SSC are all experiencing a very active

semester for our programs. With the campus experiencing exceptionally high enrollment, the need for support services

will be even more important.

In addition to assisting the students with career choices and on-campus student employment, the Placement and Career Development Office can also work with students, graduates and alumni in securing off-campus employment. Area employers contact the Office daily listing both part and full-time employment opportunities. The jobs are listed internally on job boards located throughout the College as well as online. The job listing can be found under the Placement and Career Development page on the College website. Students can further utilize the Office by receiving individual assistance with resume preparation, interviewing techniques, and other valuable pre-employment skills. A career resource library is maintained within the Office which allows students to review career and employment related resources at their convenience.

I hope everyone’s school year has started off well. As I know you have heard, John A. Logan College had a record-breaking

fall enrollment and the Admissions Office staff worked tirelessly to see that all 7,000 plus students were taken care of in one form or another. Now that we have recovered we now planning for our upcoming activities this fall semester. Our Annual High School Counselor Breakfast will be taking

place on Wednesday, October 21 from 8:30 a.m.-11:00 a.m. in the College Conference Center. If there are any topics you

wish to have covered, please let me know.

The other fall ritual at John A. Logan College includes The Illinois College Exposition and College Open House. This will be taking place on Thursday, October 29 from 6:00-8:00 p.m.

in the College Conference Center. There will also be a Financial Aid and Scholarship presentation at 6:30 p.m. on this evening in room F118/119. Jane Minton is in charge of

this activity and will have a full listing of the colleges and universities that will be in attendance this fall.

“Not even the most starry-eyed optimist at John A. Logan College could have predicted a 14 percent increase in

enrollment from last fall semester to this fall.” That’s how the John A. Logan College News article about our fall

enrollment began. A 14 percent enrollment increase is almost unimaginable in today’s up and down world in which

the costs (and benefits) of education continue to rise. Almost 900 more students showing up to be advised is also

close to unimaginable from an advisor’s point of view. What that means is that we were BUSY as the beginning of the

semester approached. By the end of July, every advisor was totally booked with appointments so that no more

appointments were available weeks before walk-ins were to begin. Yes, we were VERY, VERY busy!

With registration behind us, advisors are taking a few deep breaths and getting ready for the next round. Spring registration will begin on November 2 for continuing

students who register on line only. Continuing students who would like to meet with their advisor for registration can begin calling on October 26 to schedule appointments for November 9 or later. New students may begin calling on November 9 to schedule appointments with advisors for

November 16 or later.

There can be many facets to the duties of academic advisor. It can be fun, stressful, rewarding, frustrating, busy, and,

perhaps, one of the best jobs in the world. It is rarely, if ever, boring. According to NACADA, the National Academic Advising Association, “Few experiences in students’

postsecondary career have as much potential for influencing their development as does academic advising.” With that

said, we are looking forward to seeing our students, both old and new, as we prepare for SPRING 2010!

The John A. Logan College Financial Aid Office is happy to introduce Erik Rancatore from the Illinois Student Assistance Commission to our district. Erik is one of the new members

of the Illinois Student Assistance Corps and he will be assigned to our college district. Erik will be targeting low

income first time college students in our district in order to help them prepare for a postsecondary education. Eric is

anxious to meet with all of the counselors and school contacts in our district in order to help our students. He will

be available to do presentations and/or seminars on the college experience. Erik has office space in the John A. Logan College Financial Aid Office and will be coordinating with the

financial aid office in a effort to reach as many students as possible. Please feel free to contact the John A. Logan

The Office of Veterans Resources has been quite busy. A number of veterans have enrolled in block classes that begin in October. They must then be certified in order to receive

their educational benefits. There have been substantial delays at the Veterans Administration processing centers so

some veterans are experiencing delays in receiving VA benefits. This is in part due to the new Post 9/11 G.I. bill

which must be integrated into the existing VA management system. This problem was further exasperated by a recent

computer crash at the St. Louis area processing center.The Veterans Resource Center was recently notified that John A. Logan College has been designated as a “Military

Friendly School” for 2010 by GI Jobs magazine. This award recognizes the College’s efforts to better serve veterans as

well as the number of programs it offers which serves veterans. The Veterans Resources Center was awarded a

plaque by GI Jobs in recognition of its role in that achievement.

The Assessment department started entry testing for the Fall 2010 Practical Nursing program in September. Students may

take the test 3 times (at least 30 days apart) from September, 2009 thru February, 2010.

Information packets regarding dates, times and procedures are available thru the Assessment Department.

Information on Fall, 2010 SICCM program admission has not been finalized as of this date.
