    1. SCOPE This specification provides guidance for tightening of flange bolting by means of hand spanners, wrenches, torque wrenches. Spanners and wrenched can be operated manually or hydraulic. Guidance is also provided for the tightening method and torque values.

    2. CODES & STANDARDS Throughout this specification the following standards and codes are referred to. The editions of these standards and codes that are in effect at the time of publication of this specification shall form a part of this specification. The applicability of changes in standards and codes that occur after the date of this specification shall be mutually agreed upon between Buyer and Vendor.

    ASME B16.5 Flanges & fittings

ASME B16.47 Large diameter steel flanges

    MSS-SP-44 Steel Pipeline Flanges

    3. RESPONSIBILITY The Maintenance Supervisor, Production Supervisor and QC Inspector shall ensure that all flange bolts are tightened according to this procedure.

    4. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

All flanges, gaskets and bolts & nuts shall confirm to their design and material specification.

Pipe flange alignment shall be checked and approved by the QC inspector.

Do not use lubricants on PTFE coated bolts & nuts.

Personnel shall be trained and qualified for bolt torqueing operations.

Flange bolts shall be tightened by torque wrenches.

Hydraulic torqueing shall be used when specified in the pipe class.

    5. TIGHTENING METHOD

The following procedure shall be used to ensure a leak free flange joint with a uniform load/stress distribution.

babText BoxAllow for 2-3 threads to be exposed outside the nut once tightened; this is good practice.

Bolt tightening shall be done in four stages: 1. Torque the bolts at 30% of the final loading using the appropriate bolt pattern. 2. 60% of final load. 3. 100% of final load. 4. 100% of final torque using a clockwise pattern. Crosswise patterns as below:

babText Box Nuts should not be assembled with the hard stamp or padagainst the flange. The machined face should always come intocontact with the flange.

babText BoxDamage to the flange sealing faces, particularly radial dentsand scratches, or the wrong surface finish to be observed and rectified

babText BoxNumber the studs and the nuts as an aid to identification andfor applying the criss-cross bolt tightening sequence as inthe figure

babText BoxFollow the insulation kit manufacturer's flange management instructions for pipe flanges where insulation kits are installed.

babText BoxHydraulic tensioning procedure is not in detail

    6. TORQUE VALUES Following torque tables are for general use only. For extreme applications (high temperature/pressure) consult the piping engineering department. Torque Values are in ft.-lbs., and are suitable for alloy steel bolts (A193 B7(M), A320 L7) with oil/graphite lubrication. (Nut factors used on these charts are within .15 to .19) Use with Teflon coated stud/nuts will generate a higher bolt stress but within the limits of the bolting material. Torque values limit minimum and maximum gasket seating stresses based upon pressure class and certain operating conditions (i.e: maximum pressure ratings for given pressure class, not hydrotest pressure).

    7. INSPECTION AND RECORDS

All flange joints shall be checked for tightness and torque values as described in this procedure by the QC inspectors.

When a joint has been checked and approved a tag shall be placed with the jointing details

o Flange size o Rating o Bolt size o Bolt length o Torque value applied o Joint No. o Etc.

This tag shall be signed by the flange torque technician who performed the work and the QC inspector who checked the joint.

If a flange joint has to be loosened for any reason the tag shall be removed and destroyed. Subsequently the joint has to be tightened again according to this procedure.

All the details shall be recorded in the Flange tightness inspection report by the QC inspector and be submitted to the Client for approval.
