HBC BUDDHA DAY CELEBRATION

April 8th is the birthday of Shakyamuni Buddha. This birthday celebra-

tion is known as "Buddha Day” and is also known as “Hanamatsuri”.

The Hawaii Buddhist Council cordially invites everyone to the Buddha

Day Service. This year the service will be held at Soto Mission of Hawaii.

The guest speaker is Dr. Jay Sakashita, Professor of Religion, Arts and

Humanities at Leeward Community College and the University of Hawaii

at Manoa.

Picture Contest: What does Hanamatsuri mean to me?

Hanamatsuri or Buddha Day is the celebration of the day Shakyamuni

Buddha was born on April 8th in Lumbini, Napal. Does it have any meaning

to you? If so, would you please draw a picture of what does Hanamatsuri

mean to me.

This would be a good time to re-think about what does Hanamatsuri or Bud-

dha Day mean to me? Like any contest, we shall have a prize so please have

your creative thinking cap on and draw something! Thank you

Commemorative Symposium Honen Buddhism, East to West In celebration of the 120th anniversary of the arrival of the first

Jodo Shu Ministers to Hawaii (Rev. Taijo Matsuo in March 25, 1894

and Rev. Gakuo Okabe on May 14, 1894), a Symposium Honen Bud-

dhism, East to West, was held at the Betsuin on March 14 (mainly in

Japanese) and continued on March 15, 2015 in English.

Professor Kiyohiko Fujimoto: Professor Fujimoto who is also a

Jodo Shu minister comes from the same temple where Rev. Okabe, came from in Oshima-gun, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Rev. Shinri Hara

gave an overview in English of Professor Fujimoto’s talk on March 14

regarding the Eastward Movement of Honen Buddhism. Professor

Fujimoto stated that the first line of Eastward movement to Westward

movement are the ministers. Practice of Nembutsu. Today we are

linked by culture—religion—culture. Reciting the Nembutsu—Namu Amida Butsu

gives us peace and comfort. The Eight Fold Path is our guide.

Gary Link: Gary Link of New York Monastery Quon Yeung and has been a devotee of Nembutsu. He has been corresponding with Rev.

Ishikawa of Koloa Jodo Mission since 2005. He discussed the website

communication of ministers and members. Recommended that temples

have a central site for their website and that the website be updated reg-

ularly. We also need more publications in English so those who may be interested can

gain some insight.

Rev. Edarudo Ryoho Sasaki: Rev. Sasaki is from Brazil and he talked

about Honen Buddhism in South America, particularly Brazil. Japanese

in Brazil endured a lot. After World War II there were a lot of babies born

who were abandoned because they were not full Japanese but “hapa” or

mixed. A minister sensitive to this wanted to start an orphanage but

found another group more in need—the mentally challenged. They have a welfare sys-

tem not like our system. There are 1200 families supporting their system. As the peo-

ple grow older, although they are Japanese and were fluent in Portuguese and Japanese, they would go back to their own Japanese which they were used to before. Rev.

Sasaki’s word is COURAGE!

Leonard Chow: Leonard is President of the Hawaii Council of Jodo Missions and stated he grew up with Chinese Pure Land Buddhism. But in 1972 he learned about

Jodo Buddhism. He had many talks with former Hilo Meishoin minister Rev. Dwight

Nakamura. He stressed local born ministers would help and possibly getting them

educated in Hawaii. He also mentioned the YouTube sermons by Rev. Kosen Ishikawa

and Rev. Koji Ezaki are informative. He also stressed about opening the doors to all

ethnic groups and we need to reach out to improve society. Page 3

Den Den Mushi

On Sunday, February 22, 2015, six students from Shukutoku University

Panel Theater Group performed their panel story with singing for everyone who

attended the Sunday Service.

The students were: Yuki Takano, Kana Iwasaki, Manami Yagi, Seiya

Matsuzaki, Sayaka Hirano and Risa Katsuki. While on Oahu and on the neigh-

bor islands, Den Den Mushi visit care homes. Everyone enjoyed their perfor-

mance which also included some exercise.

Fujinkai Ladies Enjoy BINGO at New Years Party

The Honolulu Jodo Shu Fujinkai ladies held their annual General Membership meet-

ing on February 22, 2015, which also included their New Year’s party. Prior to the New Year’s

party, the ladies and temple members enjoyed Den Den Mushi’s performance of the panel

theater group from Shukutoku University. Every-

one enjoyed their performance—so precious!

And so pleasant! See photos on page 4 of Den

Den Mushi performance.

At the Fujinkai meeting, the 2015-2017 officers

were installed:

Keiro ladies (80 years and older) were recognized and

received a package of sekihan (mochi rice with azuki

beans or “happy rice”) served on happy occasions like

our New Year’s party! Front row: Mikie Karimoto,

Den Den Mushi and Sunday School students

enjoyed lunch at Fujinkai’s New Year’s party.

Shortly after this photo was taken, the Den Den

Mushi Group gathered their suitcases and were off

to Kauai to meet Rev. Ishikawa of Koloa and

Kapaa Jodo Missions. Their time on Oahu was

short but we were happy that they were able to join

the Fujinkai’s New Year’s party. The Sunday

School students were happy too!

What is “Perpetual Memorial

Service?” (Eitaikyo)

This record of a perpetual memorial service and is called Eitaikyo in Japanese. When the date of death occurs for a person listed on this record, the ministers pray for that individual during the morn-ing service. The prayers will continue each year for

as long as Jodo Mission exists.

Anyone can be included in it. You may put your own name on the list, too. This also helps when it is difficult to have memorial services. We also wel-come you to attend the morning service at 8:30am.

How to apply

Stop by the office, and fill out the application form. Each name costs $200. After the application is accepted, the name will be listed on the record.
