Montalvo Employment Opportunity Job Title: Staff Gardener Part-time, 20-24 hrs/wk (60%), variable by season, non-exempt Montalvo Arts Center is seeking a skilled and energetic member for our gardening and grounds care team. Reporting to the Operations Director, this position will work closely with the Buildings and Grounds committee, and our Garden Consultant, with the purpose of continuing the restoration and development of the gardens on the property to a consistent high level of beauty, uniqueness, and professionalism. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Grooming, fertilizing, and weeding of flowerbeds. Hand watering and maintenance of containers, with an awareness and sensitivity to water conservation needs. Planting of flowers and shrubs. Sowing seeds and transplanting seedlings for use in the gardens. Light pruning of shrubs and perennials. Composting and mulching of beds. Help lead and manage a part time gardening crew. Some irrigation system maintenance and repair. Provide regular leadership and coordination with garden volunteers. Perform other related duties as required. The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications: Candidate should have experience in horticulture and a familiarity with common landscape plants. Experience in organic methods of horticulture is a plus along with a willingness to learn less common varieties of plants and their uses. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Attentive to detail and accurate. Ability to work occasional evenings/weekends as needed. Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team, under direct or indirect supervision, and on specific time deadlines. Ability to instruct and lead both experienced and novice garden volunteers. Valid CA driver’s license and clean driving record required. Working Conditions & Physical Tasks: Most job functions performed outdoors. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 lbs and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. Some local travel necessary; valid driver’s license and access to own vehicle required. Background check and DOJ LiveScan fingerprint clearance required.

Compensation: $16-$17/hour, DOE. Benefits: This position is eligible for pro-rated time-off benefits (60%), including vacation, personal, sick and holiday time, as well as participation in flexible spending account and 401K retirement savings plan. This position is not eligible for employee health benefits.
