A Reminder Of Who Am I & Why Am I Sharing What Helped Me?

Who Am I….I am a hardworking guy who, like many others, found himself out of work during the economic downturn in 2010. After a long battle of wrong turns, job search strategies that led to no where, and dead end leads, I decided to take a more strategic approach to my job search. Like anything else in life, I needed to treat my search like a full-time job and create a plan that would allow me to stand out above the competition.

Why Am I Sharing What Helped Me…because I quickly realized that to handle an event like that is to focus on what you can control and share the experience to help others. I believe that an experience not shared is a lost opportunity in life, and that smart people learn from their mistakes and smarter people learn from other people’s experiences.

I’m Not Old, I’m Experienced!!!

The next group of slides will discuss things that you can do to neutralize the fact that you are an older worker.

I will tell you the tip or idea and let you know why I like it to help you in dealing with the process.

Remember, I am by no means a professional and never claim to be. I am just giving you things as I see them to help you to see through the ‘fog’ and get ahead in your career.

I hope my ideas help you out and help me to end unemployment one person at a time.

Page 5: Job Search Survival Kit -- Part 24 -- I'm Not "Old", I'm "Experienced".

I’m Not Old, I’m Experinced!!!

Lets start with you. As long as you see yourself as old and project an attitude that you are old and start the conversation with the fact that you are old, then guess what? You ARE old. At least to the person you are talking to. Why? Because YOU say it and because YOU bring attention to it. Remember Jack Palance doing the one arm push ups on TV? Did he see himself as old? NO and neither should you. Adjust the attitude and EMBRACE your experienced state. No one will love you until you love yourself. Get that into your thought process and stick with it.

Have you updated your skills lately?

That is on you. You have to get with it and learn new technology and make sure you take all the classes that unemployment offers.

Look at what skills are hot and go get some knowledge in that area. That is on you. Yes, it may cost some money but you have to invest in yourself sometimes and how good does it look in an interview that you showed the initiative to get the needed skills on your own?

Think about career paths that experience is an advantage. One obvious one would be business consulting. Think about it. If you were paying for consulting services, would you want to see someone walk in the door who is fresh out of college or someone who has been through a few battles and can bring your business knowledge? Of course you would want the more experienced person

Maybe you are better off working for yourself? You have always had a dream to do it? Why not start something like an Etsy shop or getting rid of things on Ebay or driving as an Uber driver? You never know if something will grow huge for you. It happens for people all the time. Why not you? You can start small and work from there. Plus, you are gaining skills that are useful and you have great interview stories and you can grow it over time while using your experience to avert mistakes. Think about it.

Are you promoting yourself properly? How is your LinkedIn profile? Is it up to date? Does it have all of your talents? Does it have useful buzzwords? Does present you properly? Have you been updating? You do have a LinkedIn profile right? LinkedIn is YOUR INFOMERCIAL. Make it show you the best way possible . I personally believe it should have everything about your professional skills in it and let the chips fall where they may but that is an individual decision. Be proud of yourself and be ok with who you are. It’s the way to be.

I’m Not Old, I’m Experienced.

You have to take care of yourself and get yourself current.

Hair, clothes, physical appearance, weight, style, accessories, colors, tidiness.

All the above stuff matters. Quit making excuses and take care of these items as best you can to present yourself the best you can. That is on you and is not something you should take for granted. It matters whether you are old or young but don’t let it get in your way.

I’m Not Old, I’m Experienced.

When you network, it is important you focus on the future and how excited you are to get to your next opportunity instead of the past and where you used to be. Looking forward is a person with a lot of enthusiasm and someone excited about the future. Looking backward all the time tells the person you are talking to that your mind is in the past. Adjust this and follow this and people will see you differently.

I’m Not Old, I’m Experienced.

If a company sees you as not a fit no matter what the reason is, means you are not a fit. Yes, age can be a factor to some companies but do you really want to work for a company that looks at things that way and is that short-sighted anyway? I don’t think when all is said and done that you do now do you?

Page 13: Job Search Survival Kit -- Part 24 -- I'm Not "Old", I'm "Experienced".

I’m Not Old, I’m Experienced.

Do you have a Twitter account? Remember, there are a ton of jobs on Twitter and in an interview, if you tell the person that you found the job on Twitter, the person will have a reason not to focus on your age and instead see that you have an understanding of things that are today‘s technology. Have as many example as you can on this. It can never hurt.

Page 14: Job Search Survival Kit -- Part 24 -- I'm Not "Old", I'm "Experienced".

I’m Not Old, I’m Experienced.

Quit taking everything so personal and driving everything back to you being old. If you have the skills, you will be in the game. If you don’t then you won’t no matter what your age is. That is on you and that is something that you can change so change it and make that who you are.

Page 15: Job Search Survival Kit -- Part 24 -- I'm Not "Old", I'm "Experienced".

I’m Not Old, I’m Experienced.

Face it, you will be interviewed by someone younger. That is just a fact. Embrace that fact and be enthusiastic, positive while being sure that you always talk about your mentoring experience as well as how well your mentees have done in their career and how you are excited to always share your experiences, both good and bad, with people who are at different stages of their career because you always want others to succeed and that you believe that any company is better off with an official mentoring program. If it doesn’t exist you would love to be on the committee that starts the program because people development is that important to you and mean it. Want to get over the whole young, old thing? Tell the young person that you can’t wait to do this as part of how you will add value to the company when you start. Why? Because you can do it and its another way that your experience makes you stand out.

Page 16: Job Search Survival Kit -- Part 24 -- I'm Not "Old", I'm "Experienced".

Old or young is a state of mind. Which are you and what person do you project to people? Are you positive, enthusiastic ? Are you clear in your interview discussions how you will add value to the company the day you start? Do you have stories that you can pull out that show your skills? Are you “fearless” because you have seen so much?

Have you gotten all the certifications that you can, or at least a few that justify your experiences? That is HUGE. People that are certified have an edge in the job search process and with all our experience, shouldn’t a certification be the best way to validate it? Get certified in something that will help you based on your experience and do it as soon as you can. My certifications have helped me immensely and actually I continue to try to achieve more of them if they will add to my career. I don’t think you can ever have enough “letters” after your name. Remember, the more ways you are certified, the more ways that you can help a company both today and in the future. That will always help you to have an edge in the process so get certified.
