Job roles in the media industry

Screen writing

• A screen writer is a freelance work, meaning they are paid to do a specific job

• They create a screen play to be made into a film/T.V program

• It comes under creative in the job roles as you need an imagination to turn an idea into a script.

Advertising• Advertising is getting the product or whatever you’re selling well known by the public. • The first real advert was made in the 18th century by Thomas J Barratt. • The idea of the ‘sexual sell’ was created by a woman. • There is a hierarchy of effects model:1. Awareness2. Knowledge3. Liking4. Preference 5. Conviction 6. PurchaseThe Obama hope poster is a famous example of advertising made by Shepherd Fairey. • This job role would come into both research and creative. This is because to make an

advertisement you need a creative side to make sure it appeals to the audience and to also research into the subject in which you’re creating an advertisement for and the audience.

• Advertising could be a full time job where you could work at a company and are given different jobs from other companies.

Costume designer• The costume designer is the people who research into the script

and what kind of era the film/T.V program is being made in to create the costumes for the characters.

• They also produce drawings, work with director, meet with wardrobe manager, attend rehearsals and fittings.

• This would come under the creative side of things also research, they have to research into the script and what kind of time its set to know what costumes to create. Also it is creative as they need a creative side to make the costumes and make them look good enough for the film.

• This could be freelance work as they are paid to do a specific job. Or you could own your own shop which would be a full time job and rent costumes out.

Cinematographer

• The cinematographer shoots and develops the film. And is the chief over the camera and lighting crews working on a film, and responsible for achieving artistic and technical decisions related to the image. The study and practice of this field is referred to as cinematography.

• This would be a technical kind of job as they are shooting and developing the film, also it would come under management as they are responsible for the camera and lighting crew.

• This would be a full time job as they are working a lot with the camera and lighting crews and would have a lot of work to do all day.

Radio Host• is a person with an on-air position in radio broadcasting. A radio

personality can be someone who introduces and discusses various genres of music, hosts a talk show show that may take calls from listeners, or someone whose primary responsibility is to give news, weather, sports, or traffic information.

• An example of a radio host would be Chris Moyles.• This would be a part time job as they are only on for a certain amount

of time as there are different radio hosts who also work there. • This would come under creative as they are talking during the show

and need to keep the audience wanting to listen and will therefore have to come up with a good script.

Production Designer

• The production designer is the person who looks at the scripts, provides estimates for art department, decide on sets and deliver sketches to the art department.

• This would be an editorial job as they are looking and changing the script. Also it would be research as they are researching into the script to decide on the sets and also have to research into the amount of money the film has to spend to give it to the art deparment.

Location Scout

The location scout is a very vital part of the preproduction stage. Once the screen writer, director and producer have got an idea on what scenery they want for the film the location scout will go out and find a place that most suits the idea. They take into consideration many factors before choosing the location in which to film, these include• Financial cost• Available parking• Available electric power• Available light.This would come under the research as they have to research into the places they would have to rent out to be able to record the footage and also get the right location

Journalist • A journalist is someone who collects, writes and distributes news around the

world. • They research into information and report about it so people have a better

understanding of what’s going on in the world. • This would be a free lance job as they are paid for the information they

deliver to either magazines or newspapers.• This is a research job as they are doing their own research to gain

information to get money.• Tom Wolfe: In the 1960s and 1970s, news writing and journalism underwent

a bit of a transformation, and was called “new journalism“. One of those at the forefront was Tom Wolfe. This was magazine journalism, and Wolfe helped established a style that was carried on in long-form narrative, using scenes rather than straight-out facts. Games developer

• A games developer is an individual or company working on a game production

• They may specify in certain games consoles such as; Xbox 360, Wii, ps3 etc.

• They specialise in certain types of games e.g; shooters, role play.• This would be a full time job as people would work a 36+ hour

week to get the game right and released quickly to gain money.• It is a creative job as they are thinking of ideas of how to make

the game and what characters to use. It’s also technical as they would use special programs to create the game.

Ubisoft created the assassins creed series.

Casting agent

• A casting agent is someone who will find jobs for people such as actors, screen writers, directors, models etc.

• They also defend and promote the interest of the client. • A casting agent would be a full time job as they would

get lots of different clients looking for jobs which they have to search for. It may take up a lot of time so its better to have a typical 9-5 job.

• It would come under a research job as they have to research into the people they have wanting jobs to get the job that would best suit their client.

Camera operator• A camera operator or cameraman is a professional operator of a

film or video camera. In filmmaking, the leading camera operator is usually called a cinematographer, while a camera operator in a video production may be known as a television camera operator, video camera operator, or videographer, depending on the context and technology involved, usually operating a professional video camera.

• Information from wikipedia• This would be a free lance job as they are paid to do the specific

job they are employed for and once its done they can be let go. • This would come under technical as they need to know how to

do the specific shots and work the camera to get the best filming.

Make up artist• A make up artist is someone who will apply make up/prosthetics for films and T.V programs.

Theatrical makeup Stage makeup is used as a method in conjunction with stage lighting to highlight the actors' faces in order make expressions visible to the audience from moderate distances. This often includes defining the eyes and lips as well as the highlights and lowlights of the facial bones. Special effects makeup (FX makeup) The use of special effects techniques enhancing physical features to exhibit metaphysical characteristics as well as fantasy makeup. The use of prosthetics and plaster casting are also required for projects that entails non-human appearances. Accents such as theatrical blood and ooze are also techniques applicable to this type of makeup.

• Information from Wikipedia. • This would be a part time job, or full time job depending on the company they are working

for. If it was a high budget film it would most likely be full time as there would be a lot of people to use the make up for. If it was a low budget film then it would most likely be a part time job as they wont need the make up artist as much.

• This would come under a creative job as they need creativity to put the make up on the people and know how they’re going to have to look for the lighting and the kind of mood of the film

Producer

• The producer is the person who has to find the finance for the film.

• They are part of all the major film making stages and oversee most of the project.

• Avi Arad is a famous producer for Marvel films. • This would be a full time job as they are in-charge of

everything on the production.• This would come under management as they are the

boss of everything that’s going on.

Sound engineer • Is someone who operates the sound equipment used to TV, films and

live shows.• They are hired by companies. • They are responsible for the machines that record, mix and

reproduce the music/audio. • They work closely with the producers, actors and directors to make

sure they’re getting the right sound. • This could be a free lance job as they are paid for the doing the job. It

could also be a full time job at a company who makes lots of low budget films.

• This would come under technical as they need to know how to get the right sound for the TV and films and how to work the equipment.

Director

• The director is the one with the creative ideas and who everyone comes to too make sure they’re doing the film right.

• A famous director would be Clint Eastwood• This is a full time job as they are on the set everyday

working with all the people• This also comes under creative and management as the

director comes up with all the ideas on what to do and finalises all the ideas. It also comes under management as they are in-charge of everything that happens on set.

Editor

• The editor is someone who takes all the raw footage once the filming is done and puts it in a narrative order. They make the film look good and make sense.

• This would come under technical as they are working with programs to put the footage together and create a sequence.

• This could be a full time job as they make work for a specific company like the BBC or ITV.

• It could also be freelance if someone is hiring someone to edit the footage together for them.

Gaffer

• They are the head electrician working on the film, they are boss of the lighting plan and the grips.

• If experienced enough they are responsible for the lighting generators, lights and work power.

• This would be a technical or management job as they are working with the lights and such meaning they must have experience in how to use them and know about the technical side of things. It’s also management as they are in charge of specific things.

• This could be freelance as they would be hired to do a specific job for the production.

Prop Master

• The prop master is the person who is in-charge of the props.

• They are the people who manufacture or purchase the props for the production

• They also work on the appearance of the stage/set• This could be a free lance job as they are hired to do a

specific job and are paid for it.• This would be a research kind of job as they need to

research into the production they are getting props for and find the best and cheapest props for the film/TV programme.

Art Director

• They develop or make specific parts for the scenes. • They are in-charge of how it communicates visually to

the audience, what it would make them feel from seeing the piece of art from the scene, they want to connote specific feelings for specific scenes.

• This could be a full time job as they may work for a company which are hired to do the work for productions.

• This would be a creative job as they are doing art for the production and would need a creative state of mind to create the art.

Music Supervisor • It is the music supervisors job to make the directors visions come

to reality when it comes to music.• They will work closely with the director and producer to get the

right idea of the music they need to connote the emotions from the scenes.

• This would be a creative job as they need to have good ideas in what music to use in the scenes that best suits it. It would also be research as they need to research into the script to know about the emotions being given off and then research into different types of music to make the directors visions come to life.

• This could be a free lance job as they would be hired to do the specific job and then once its done they won’t need to do anymore.

Foley Artist

• They are the people who put in the every day sound effects during post production.

• This enhances the quality to the films/ TV programmes.

• They can make sounds from swishing clothes to making footsteps and breaking glass.

• This may be a freelance job as they are only needed for a certain amount of time after the filming.

• This would come under editorial as its after the filming is done.

Animation and SFX

• Animation is showing some pictures to make it seem like its moving.

• Animation can be either made by hand, by computer or 3D objects.

• It is a creative and technical job as they need creativity to make the moving images. Also technical as they need to know how to use the programmes to a good standard that will sell.

• This would be a full time job as they may work for a specific company to make films. E.G Pixar.

Stunt Coordinator

• A stunt coordinator, who is usually a professional stunt man is the person who hires all the people to do the stunts for the TV programme or film

• They arrange the performance of the stunt as well. • This would be a research job as they have to research

into the script and actors to find the best stunt doubles and coordinate the right stunts.

• This would be a full time job as they would work for a company and be hired by other companies to do the stunts.

Grip

• They are lighting technicians • They work closely with the camera operators to provide

camera support and they work closely with the lighting department to set up lights for the film/TV programme.

• This would be a technical job as they are working with the lights and cameras for the production.

• This could be free lance work as a production may hire them just to do the job and then pay them for it. Or they could have a full time job working with a company to be their grip.
