QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
Most people coming into the industry would start at the bottom working as a assistant in a design studio or workshop. Most designers are graduates from full time courses. Courses are available at HND, degree and postgraduate level.
Relevant degree subjects include- Technical theatre, design specialising in theatre or set design.
WHERE TO STUDY?
Though there is more range of colleges in the USA then Ireland, there are a few colleges that focus in on design, such as-
Dun Laoghaire College- this offers a set and screen design course.
The National College of Art and Design in Dublin- this also has a range of art and design courses.
AVERAGE SALARY
According to the Bureau of labour statistics, set and exhibit designers made a average salary of $51,600 annually in 2010.
The movie and video industry was the highest paying among these, with a average salary of $65,050 a year.
PROMOTION OPPORTUNITIES
Many set designers start of as a assistant and work their way up to being a designer, but set designers can also move on to be Art Directors for film or Production designers.
