Job Description Job title: Student Engagement Manager (Policy and Campaigns)
Purpose of the post: To develop and deliver a transformational framework for effective
representation across the whole student experience
To maximise opportunities for students to create positive change and influence
decision making in the Students’ Union, the University and the wider
community
To provide leadership and management of the Students’ Union representative
function
Main duties and responsibilities:
1 Representation Framework
To take a lead role in the development and implementation of a strategy and framework that ensures
students are represented across the four key areas of education, community, interest and identity.
To ensure effective support is in place for all our representatives to gain the experience, knowledge and
skills they need to carry out their roles, including the handover and induction process for our elected
officers.
To increase the impact and outcomes of representation through the development of great systems and
great representatives.
To ensure an evidence and research based approach to driving forward officer and organisational
priorities.
To lead the management of policy support to officers, representatives and staff.
To ensure that representatives receive the appropriate policy support and briefings.
To work in partnership with the University to ensure that student representation contributes to enhancing
the student experience.
To ensure we support and increase the impact of our student execs, committees, networks and forums.
2 Change and Decision Making
To enhance the Students’ Union change making infrastructure and maximise the voice of students. To manage Bristol SU key democratic events and processes (e.g. elections, AMM, Student Council).
To support students to influence decision making in the Students’ Union, the University and the wider
community.
To ensure Bristol SU’s policy, campaigning and democratic work is focused on empowering students and
officers to drive change.
To ensure we support and increase the impact of our student execs, committees and forums.
To work with the other student engagement managers to ensure that the service area is effective and
managing resources collectively.
3 Leadership and Management
To ensure the service objectives and the operational plan are delivered in line with the organisational
strategy.
Manage the day to day operations of the team and ensure transforming students’ lives through effective
representation is core to the ongoing development of the area.
Provide support to all direct reports through objective setting, PARs, talent management review and the
agreement of personal development plans.
To demonstrate positive leadership, modelling the behaviours within the Bristol SU Competency
Framework.
To ensure effective and efficient communication within the department and with other departments
across the organisation.

To lead policy specialism area (to be agreed) and coordinate briefings to staff and officers as
appropriate.
To ensure that the prescribed business planning and financial processes are complied with so that the on-
going development and delivery of Bristol SU strategy and priorities are facilitated.
4 General
To provide support and guidance to elected student officers, student leaders and/or representatives
(specifics to be agreed with line manager).
To lead a policy specialism area (to be agreed with line manager) and coordinate briefings to staff and
officers as appropriate.
To provide support and work with the relevant executive committees to maximise their effectiveness.
To work across the service area to ensure organisational business objectives are met.
From time to time areas of responsibility will be reviewed and potentially reallocated to ensure the service
area is well placed to deliver its objectives.
5 Health and Safety Management
To comply with all Bristol SU Health and Safety guidelines
To take personal responsibility for Health and Safety of yourself and those around you
To undertake Health & Safety training and attend meetings as required by Bristol SU.
6 Other
Attend weekly organisation team briefings, departmental team meetings, monthly organisational
development sessions and other such meetings to promote inter department communications,
development of new ideas and success sharing.
To adhere to, and to comply with Bristol SU’s policies and procedures as detailed in the Staff Handbook.
Undertake such other tasks as may be necessary in order to achieve the vision, mission and values of
Bristol SU, as directed.
Promote the vision, mission and values of Bristol SU through your interactions with internal and external
stakeholders throughout your daily working routine.
Contribute to relevant focus groups and Bristol SU and University of Bristol committees as required.
Attend conferences and seminars that are of benefit to the Bristol SU as required.
Training and Professional Development
Bristol SU has achieved the Investors in People standard and considers professional development as key to the
success of the individual within the organisation and for future career development. All staff are offered regular
professional development through team briefings, organisation development sessions and in-house training.
Each staff member takes part in the annual performance assessment review (PAR) and develops a personal
development plan.
It is expected that the post-holder will be offered the opportunity to participate in additional opportunities and
training that is relevant to their duties.
Bristol SU have achieved the Investors in Diversity (IiD) accreditation. The aim of IiD is 'to support and enable
organisations to adopt, develop and benchmark practices which promote inclusion, equality, diversity and
achievement'. It requires and encourages staff at all levels to actively participate in promoting equality, diversity

Notes
The nature of the post will, at times, require additional commitment over and above normal office hours.

The post-holder will work with other teams from across the organisation.
Hours of work: 35 hours per week, plus additional hours as necessary. Flexibility is
required and there will be an expectation of longer hours during term
time (especially October).
We will consider requests for flexible working including job share.
Holiday: 25 days per year plus bank holidays and university closure days. The
majority of holiday is taken out of term time. This will be pro-rated for
part-time workers.
Probationary period: All posts are subject to at least a 6 month probationary period. Reviews
are held regularly during this period.
Salary: £28.434 - £31,647 per annum
