Session Overview
• Introductions
• Eric Letsinger, IBM
• Joannne DeStefano, Cornell University
• Lee Belarmino, San Joaquin Delta College
• General Discussion of Implementation and Integration Issues
![Page 3: Joanne DeStafano, Cornell University Lee Belarmino, San Joaquin Delta College Eric Letsinger, IBM](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062408/5681377d550346895d9f1760/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
IBM Global Business Services
• IBM is software agnostic• IBM believes in the promise of open and
community source applications and has experience to bring to the table
• We recognize the need for schools to move through a rational, disciplined and transparent process before software is selected
• ~25 schools at early exploration stage…here’s what we hear…
![Page 4: Joanne DeStafano, Cornell University Lee Belarmino, San Joaquin Delta College Eric Letsinger, IBM](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062408/5681377d550346895d9f1760/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Implementation: on the PLUS side…
• Better fit• More control – includes
implementation options• Flexible Chart of Accounts• Workflow• Avoid risks of corporate
shifts• Focused community
• Distributed access• Drives opportunity for
internal skills upgrade• Total cost of ownership -
uncertainty• Current technology• Faster procurement• Kualifier – test drive option
![Page 5: Joanne DeStafano, Cornell University Lee Belarmino, San Joaquin Delta College Eric Letsinger, IBM](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062408/5681377d550346895d9f1760/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Implementation:on the MINUS side…
• Sustainability• Unproven – no one has
done “it”…yet• Security concerns• Budget module lacking;
Inventory/stores• Requires new skills
acquisition• Sunk investment in vended
software may impede transition
• Requires new levels of buy-in
• Release maturity• Unfamiliar risk profile• Forces best-of-breed
approach – more integration
• No one vendor• Could require complex
project/program management structures

Cornell a Unique Private University
• NYS land grant institution, with experiment station• Seven endowed colleges• Medical college in NYC and Qatar• Four colleges managed under contract with the State
University of New York• Eight subsidiaries• 20,000 students• 10,000 faculty and staff• $2.5 billion annual expenses
![Page 7: Joanne DeStafano, Cornell University Lee Belarmino, San Joaquin Delta College Eric Letsinger, IBM](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062408/5681377d550346895d9f1760/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Reality for Cornell• Started ERP implementations in 1995
• Original budget to implement all five major administration systems was spent on our first installation – HR/Payroll
• Completed 2nd system in 2004
• Working on 3rd system – Student; implementation planned for FY08
• Financial systems were scheduled to be the last of the major ERP systems, not on the docket until 2011
![Page 8: Joanne DeStafano, Cornell University Lee Belarmino, San Joaquin Delta College Eric Letsinger, IBM](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062408/5681377d550346895d9f1760/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Existing Financial System Situation
• Online and batch Natural/ADABAS system developed in 1970’s
• Data model flaws
• System intended for central use only
• Forces decisions based on system capabilities not “business” requirements
• Poor use of current database technology
![Page 9: Joanne DeStafano, Cornell University Lee Belarmino, San Joaquin Delta College Eric Letsinger, IBM](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062408/5681377d550346895d9f1760/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Implementation Plan
• Utilize university project management office
• Finalize new chart structure• Integrate a data delivery plan• Develop CU-KFS project plan
Big bang or phased
Targeted use of external services
Rice, KRA, etc. considerations

Implementation: Summary
• New implementation models emerging
• No “one size fits all”
• There are more and more travelers on the road….
