1. Efficiency on the Page - In an attempt to streamline the existing design I've made 2

critical changes. First, the navigation for the full site has been reduced in half from roughly 300 pixels tall to 150 pxls. The second change was to remove the 3 column structure dictated on all pages by the "L" shape of the old header.

- All sub-section navigation will now become horizontal and move right below the current sections.

- Moved from multi-column, multi-section homepage to a 2-column orientation.

2. Rollovers for Site Tabs - Rollovers will give a view of the sub navigation that exists

within each section. - Clicking on the tab will take the user to the tab page, clicking

on the text links will take them directly to the sub-section - While rollovers aren't touchscreen friendly, the usability gain,

may outweigh the potential impact on mobile users. - Reports as a label may change to Publications

3. Rollovers with Featured Content - For sections with content that changes frequently or has

featured content, a portion of the rollover can feature content. Reports, Initiatives, Blogs and Events can all utilize a 2 column approach within the space.

- See All Publications can be listed before or after the featured content item.

4. Rollover w/ Latest Content - Similar to feature 3 but instead of having Featured Content,

the site automatically lists the most recent post or piece of content.

Just over a week ago, I had the pleasure of assisting members of the Cooney Center staff in a two-day research study at the New York Hall of Science(NYSCI) in Queens, NY. The study, conducted in corroboration with NYSCI, focused on the interaction between children (ages 3-5) and their caregivers when reading two different science books: one regular book and one on the iPad. Would the iPad serve as a distraction to children or would it actually promote as much parent-child conversation and interaction as the print book? In order to answer this important question, the children and their caregivers were asked a series of questions after each book was finished as well as at the end of the session.

I always love going to the Games, Learning and Society (GLS) conference in Madison, Wisconsin. Where else are you guaranteed access to a lakeside terrace, local microbrews, and warm Midwestern hospitality? In addition to these welcome amenities, GLS is also a place where games are taken quite seriously, albeit in a playful way. This year was no exception. I attended the conference to present some of the early findings from my own research. With my collaborator LeAnne Wagner, I am a Co-Principal Investigator of a National Science Foundation grant entitled "Urban Game Design as a Tool for Creativity, Collaboration, and Learning Among Youth."

2. Billboard - Recreate a new HTML4 or 5 Rotating billboard such that the

page will properly render on mobile browsers- Images, text and links should all be managed via console in

CMS.

3. Blog - As blogs will most likely be the most frequently updated

content stream on the site, I placed greater emphasis on the blog, on the homepage itself. One option can be to make the homepage the primary point of access to the blog itself (thus removing blog subsection from the site and navigation).

- [not shown] Key attributes such as Feature, Report, Initiative, Press Release, etc can serve as search terms/quick navigational filters for displaying specific content from the blog stream.

- See more link at the bottom of the blog stream can either take you to the blog landing page, OR it can load additional blog entries directly on this page.

4. Link back to Sesame Workshop - I moved this from the bottom of the site footer up to the top

of the site as part of the global header. Color fidelity to match the Sesame site refresh can bring the site inline to the parent organization. I left it grey and black on purpose.

5. Social Links - Added RSS functionality to this series of social links. This

unifies all syndication/social functions. - I would also recommend merging all syndication feeds

moving forward into a single stream.

6. "Widgets" of content from other various content areas of the siteColor coded to the other various subsections, these widgets would always pull the most recent content threads for each sub-section.

7. Find us on Facebook Standard widget from Facebook.

8. Founding Sponsors - This "widget" can highlight partners, sponsors or any other

group you'd like to present on the homepage. - [not shown] the other option would be to randomly or

purposefully highlight a single sponsor or partner and be titled Feature Sponsor/Partner

1. Sub-Section Features - The homepage can feature a specific piece of content on

the homepage for any given section. The current layout displays "Featured" where the site admin can control the specific piece of content featured, but this could easy be "Most Recent" where the site will take the most recent entry and automatically update the site homepage.

- Featuring content can either be rules based (most recent featured article is featured on homepage) or manually set (when entering content, an option appears where a specific content item is featured. I rule would need to be established that allows for only one type of content to be featured on the homepage at any given time).

1. List All Publications - Currently, I've drafted the pagination to behave similarly to

how the current site behaves with the exception of a view all option which would reload the page, listing all reports on a single page.

2. Filtering posts - The ability to filter will depend on the attributes decided

upon for each post. Publications, research, events, and blogs can each have their own attributes or all posts can share from the same pool of attributes. Once the rules and the specific attributes are determined, these options are just resorting the listing of posts by those attributes (and probably by date as well). Alphabetical is a sort option already on the site.

research posts in that they do not have an "author" nor do they need to display one.

2. Filtering Events - Filtering options listed hère mimic the options shown by the

calendar key. This does not have to be the options nor does the ability to filter at all need to appear unless the Center requests the function.

3. Calendar - Specific days with events taking place on that day will show

the respective color key. NOTE: how does the current calendar show days with multiple events? We should consider how plugins/extensions we ultimately select handle this function.
