ANNUAL CIVIL WAR WEEKEND AND REENACTMENT COMMEMORATE

1864 RAID ON HARFORD COUNTY STORE

Civil War festivities open to public July 11 and 12

Kingsville, Md.-The Friends of Jerusalem Mill announce their 6th Annual Civil War Weekend

Reenactment and Encampment, one of the biggest reenactments of its kind in the Baltimore area,

as well as one of the area’s best-kept secrets. Open to the public and featuring a variety of

activities for adults and children alike, the event commemorates CSA Major Harry W. Gilmor's

1864 raid across Baltimore and Harford Counties and on the General Store (now popularly

known as McCourtney's), located in Jerusalem Mill Village.

Scheduled for Saturday, July 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, July 12 from 11 a.m. to 3

p.m., the event will feature a reenactment of the 1864 raid on the general store at Jerusalem Mill

Village (both Saturday and Sunday), and a concert of Civil War music on Saturday evening at

6:00 p,m. In addition, visitors can interact with costumed interpreters and soldiers inhabiting the

Village and military camps, watch cavalry and artillery demonstrations, and take tours of the

General Store, Village, and Union and Confederate camps. Kids will also have the chance to

participate in military activities specifically designed for them.

The raid being reenacted during the event was part of an overall campaign conducted by Major

Gilmor against the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad during the Civil War in 1864. Major Gilmor and

135 members of the 1st and 2nd Maryland Cavalry passed through Jerusalem Mill on their way to

burn the railroad bridge at Magnolia Station, stopping long enough to steal supplies and horses

from the store and the surrounding area. Although the event was not a turning point in the

conflict, it brought notoriety to the small town and today gives local residents a chance to

commemorate all of those who fought in the Civil War.

The reenactment will feature military reenactment units from across the mid-Atlantic, including

over 50 cavalry riders. A cavalry charge will take place during the reenactment on both days and

is a fairly rare site at reenactments today.

The two-day event serves as a fundraiser to directly support Jerusalem Mill’s history

 programs, preservation, and restoration efforts.

Civil War Weekend and Gilmor’s Raid are sponsored by The Friends of Jerusalem Mill (FOJM)

in cooperation with the staff of Gunpowder Falls State Park and is made possible, in part, by

grants from the Maryland State Arts Council and the Harford County Government through the

Harford County Cultural Arts Board. The Friends of Jerusalem Mill is a nonprofit membership

organization formed in 1985 to restore the gristmill, the most prominent building in the village. In

1987, Jerusalem Mill Village earned a listing on the National Register of Historic Places. Today

the gristmill serves as the Museum and Visitor Center , as well as headquarters of the Gunpowder

Falls State Park. FOJM hosts an amazing range of events and activities that bring history to life

and enable restoration of other surviving structures in one of the most intact mill villages in

Maryland.
