In the Gospel this Sunday, Jesus reminds us that it is not what enters from the out-side which makes us impure, but what is deeply rooted in our hearts. In the Letter of James we are exhorted to “humbly welcome the word that has been planted in you…” and to be “doers of the word and not hearers only.” God’s word is a message of love, mercy, compassion and freedom to all people. Is that showing in our lives? Are we rooted in that Good News so that it spills over to others?
We are encouraged to pay attention to the ways in which the word of God truly in-fluences how we live our lives. Although we all too often fail to live up to the exam-ple set for us, we are none the less assured of an abundance of gifts, because of God’s infinite love for each and every one.
In the First Reading, Moses explains to the people that it is by obeying the laws giv-en to them in the commandments that they will have life in the land, as promised to them by the Lord.
The importance of actively living our faith is further emphasized in the Second Reading. Here the author exhorts Jewish Christians not just to listen to the word, but to do what the word tells them, by caring for those in need, and living good and hon-est lives. In the Gospel, Jesus describes the lip-service of the Pharisees, who, as foretold in the words of Isaiah, offer ‘worthless worship’. Their adherence to human traditions and values takes their hearts far from God.
This week, we may want to spend some time reflecting, with the Lord’s help, how closely our own lives reflect the ideals described in the Psalm, which speaks of the just dwelling in the presence of the Lord. We can then ask with confidence that the Lord will show us the path that will draw us ever closer to his presence. God of might, giver of every good gift, put in my heart the love of your name.
Lord, who shall dwell on your holy mountain? Those who walk without faults, act with justice and speak the truth from their heart . You must do what the word tells you, not just listen to it and deceive yourself.

Over the past several months, natural, economic and social forces have significantly affected many parts of the world, calling us to place our trust in our Lord Jesus Christ. I ask you to pray with me for the people of Haiti and Afghani-stan who are even now confronting enormous trials, includ-ing the loss of life, home and safety. Here in Texas and across the United States, we are also beset by major challenges. Burdened by social unrest, a lack of respect for life and calls for social justice that may seem to go unheard, it remains our fundamental duty to contribute to the common good and protect the voice of all, especially the most vulnerable. This month as we celebrate the Assumption and Queenship of Mary, among other feasts, let us place ourselves before our most Blessed Mother invoking her intercession as she receives our intentions and carries them to her Son.
You must do what the word tells you God of might, giver of every good gift, put into our hearts the love of your name, so that, by
deepening our sense of reverence, you may nurture in us what is good, and, by your watchful care, keep safe what you have nurtured.
The Lord says “ I will guide you the best pathway for your life. I will advice you and watch over you.” PSALMS 32:8 NLT
