M. Baxi (JMB) & Co. The journey, however, met with a lot of reluctance by the British Government. As the world war - 1 continued, the Kotaks continued to act as a sub-agent in many of the Gujarat ports for ship husbanding & agency work. During the time when the monopolized shipping trade in India was dominated by foreign lines, JMB group, made their mark by handling ship husbandry and agency works in the minor ports of Gujarat. Post- Independence, the saga continued with the next generation taking up the company with much more enthusiasm and exploring many business verticals. Today standing one among the 630 companies in India, JMB group has reached a milestone in the year 2016 turning 100 years showing the legacy of resilience and strength the group has inherited. This inspiration is being carried forward by the current Chairman – Shri Krishna B Kotak who joined the family business at the age of 18 and spearheaded with his sons Mr. Dhruv K Kotak and Mr. Vir K Kotak supporting him to enlarge the ship agency business into a diversified and complete shipping company with presence in almost all the verticals of the industry. Being present at such a legendary landmark, the three Kotaks are celebrating the centenary year with all the principals, clients, associates and partners thanking them for the support and belief entrusted with the organization. th th The entire team celebrated centenary year on 26 June, 2016, along with the 13 anniversary of Visakha Container Terminal in the City of Destiny. The year which has shown a growth rate of 17% has set the perfect platform for the entire trade who’ve been using Port City as a gateway to come together and join hands for firm relationship bonding. While addressing the gathering, the Chairman of JMB group mentioned the values that the organisation believes in and how it has been implementing it. He said that “Honesty, Integrity & Innovation are the 3 core values which lead the path of success to JMB group. While the Chairman shared his experiences on the past, Mr. Vir K Kotak mentioned about the present status of the company and a message about the future by Mr. Dhruv K Kotak was shared with the staff, stakeholders and trade. VCT - The Emerging Transhipment HubVCT - The Ideal Gateway on the East Coast of India
Since the time Government of India and Nepal announced using Visakhapatnam as the additional gateway port for the EXIM movements to ICD Birgunj there have been various deliberations made in different forums. Though both Governments signed the dotted lines there are other formalities and process to be established to facilitate the movement. Hence a team from Nepal government headed by Dr. Somlal Subedi, Chief Secretary, Govt. of Nepal, visited
thVisakha Container Terminal on 24 June, 2016. Along with him other higher govt. officials accompanied to discuss the operational modalities, establishment of custom process & SOP but more importantly the commercials in terms of rail / road movements. A 2 day event was organised by VPT for the Nepal Delegates meeting all the stakeholders, Customs officials, Railways Authorities and BOT operators in the process.
On this event, Mr. M.T. Krishna Babu, IAS, Chairman – VPT, Mr. P.L. Haranadh, IRTS, Dy. Chairman, along with the Nepal delegation and other port officials visited VCT. A comprehensive presentation was made to the delegation highlighting the inherent advantages the terminal has and how it is best suited to be the additional gateway for Nepal.
During the discussions, the delegation were requested to look at bilateral movements too from India in addition to the EXIM cargo from third country. There is a lot of potential for the 2 way movements between India and Nepal that would complement the EXIM cargo movements thus facilitating the full rake transportation to ICD Birgunj.
Post the discussion with the terminal and the shipping fraternity, the high profile delegation from Nepal was quite convinced of Visakhapatnam offering their traders a premium service and the ease of doing business here would certainly augment the business further.
VCT with its global connectivity and direct weekly services especially from China & South East Asia, where most of the Nepal imports originate is all set to soon enhance their volumes by way of this ICD traffic.
OOCL a Hong Kong based company strengthened its presence in Visakhapatnam by deploying a ship in the MD2 service partnered with Bengal Tiger Line. The ship, OOCL Kobe with a LOA of 260 m anchored for the first time at Visakha Container Terminal
thon 11 June, 2016. The vessel can carry about 4578 TEUs with a Deadweight of 50,554 MT. The vessels of MD2 service are scheduled to call the terminal weekly every Friday.
To commemorate the maiden voyage of the ship in the service, a small felicitation ceremony was held on board the vessel with the captain, crew, VCT staff, other representatives of the carrier and vessel handling agents.

Frozen food exports from Visakhapatnam are on a rise with world class facilities coming up in the area to export Bovine & Pork Meat.
Andhra Pradesh is already an establishment for 3 pig breeding stations – Vizianagaram, West Godavari and Krishna districts. The export oriented pork project has a capacity to slaughter 100 pigs a day and is being developed under Public Private Partnership (PPP) model within the jurisdiction of Greater Visakha Municipal Corporation (GVMC).An estimate of Rs. 30 Cr is planned for the project. This project would also boost the economic conditions of the pig farmers in the state.
The state of the art container terminal in Port city stood first in terms of dollar value of reefer exports for two consecutive years. The port has well established connectivity to countries like – Sweden, Norway and Geneva where this meat exports are likely to take place.
Bovine meat which is being exported to Oman has now opened new markets for Indian frozen food like UAE, Egypt, Iraq, Iran, China, Vietnam and Russia. The third biggest modern abattoir in the country is set up in Visakhapatnam that would be in lines with the world class infrastructure where the meat is frozen at -40°C. The new facility would generate 90 tonnes of bovine meat in a day which requires about 600 buffaloes. The male bovine would be procured majorly from Odisha, West Bengal and also from North-Coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh.
According to Agriculture and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), India exports nearly 8-10 Lakh tonnes of buffalo meat every year of which 50% is exported to China. As VCT is already a gateway for bovine meat, with these new facilities being established in Vizag, reefer container volumes from VCT is expected to grow significantly.
GSE children’s painting competition 2016 was thorganized at VCT on 11 June, 2016. About 24
children of age group 3-16 years participated in the event along with their parents and guardians. The competition included colouring the sheets for the children below 6 years and drawing / painting on theme “Go Green” for above 6 years category. The participants were very enthusiastic and eagerly waited for the event to start. The dress code for the event was green resembling the theme“Go Green”. We also marked this event to pay tribute to “Chipko Movement”, an organized resistance to the destruction of forests spread throughout India which created a revolution in the 1970s. The name of the movement comes from the word 'embrace', as the villagers hugged the trees, and prevented the contractors from cutting them. The tiny tots from the participants hugged the trees inside the terminal premises and pledged to “Go Green and Save Trees” for a brighter future. Before the end of the programme children used green colours and embossed their palm on a canvas depicting a message “Make Me Green”. Return gifts were also distributed to the children for actively participating in the event.
