JLS Takes on TwoYear-Long ProjectsTo further the mission of the Junior League of Springfield, volunteers took on two major year-long projects in 2013-2014. The first “Done In A Year” was the national program,Darkness to Light’s Stewards of Children. The second wasbringing Dr. Ruby Payne to the Ozarks to offer solutions onhow to combat poverty.
Darkness to Light is a community training program to preventchild abuse and neglect. It teaches adults how to prevent, recognize and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. Thetraining is for any parent, teacher, or volunteer interested inthe well-being of children. D2L is the only nationallydistributed, evidence-based program proven to increaseknowledge, improve attitudes and change child protectivebehaviors by telling the stories of real victims. This programwas presented locally with funding and support from JLS.The JLS collaborated with the Ozarks Regional YMCA to trainfacilitators and offer two-hour trainings to the public. The goalfor the end of the JLS year was to have more than 700people in the Ozarks trained on how to spot and preventchild abuse. Remarkably, Junior League volunteers helpedmore than 1,000 people go through the program.
The second “Done In A Year” was a collaborative communityevent to bring an end to poverty. One of the most important
“red flags” affecting our community is the growing rate ofpoverty in the Ozarks. In early 2014, JLS, along with twelveother groups in the Springfield area, partnered to sponsorand host a three-day educational event on impacting poverty. The groups brought noted educator Dr. Ruby Payne, authorof “A Framework for Understanding Poverty” to Springfield fora series of meetings. She met with various community, civic
and faith groups to springboard our efforts to develop a five, ten and twenty year poverty plan. Dozens of JLS volunteersstaffed many of the meetings. More than 2,000 peopleattended sold-out events over the three days. As a result,Springfield’s city manager has now appointed a 33-member“Impacting Poverty Commission” to develop the strategicplan over the next year. As a member of the commission, theJunior League of Springfield will have influence on thiscommunity issue and recognize how our members willcontinue to participate in the years to come.

2013–2014 Executive Committee and Board of Directors
It has been an honor to serve as the 2013-14 President of the Junior League ofSpringfield. I am so proud to be a part ofan organization that truly lives out itsmission: promoting voluntarism, developingthe potential of women and improving thecommunity through the effective action andleadership of trained volunteers.
Getting and staying connected was an areaof concentration this year. Our many training opportunitiesconnected members to new skills and knowledge. Our committeework offered ways to better connect to other members and gainleadership experience. And our two Done In A Year projects,Darkness 2 Light Stewards of Children and the visit by Dr. RubyPayne, effectively connected JLS and the community through ourfocus area of preventing child abuse and neglect.
Creating these connections lays the groundwork for buildingcapacity and community leadership. This can be seen in thenumber of JLS members who serve on boards, lead businesses, guide non-profits and engage in public service. When asked, many of our members state their capacity to do these things is inpart due to the training and opportunities they receive in the JuniorLeague.
Over 630 women currently represent the membership of JLS. Thesuccess achieved in this year would not have been possiblewithout the over 44,000 hours of volunteer time provided by ourmembers through the League and in the community. As ourmembership continues to grow I know we will see the influence ofJLS in our community for years to come.
As exciting as it is to tell of our accomplishments, I know we arenot able to do this alone. I wish to extend special thanks to all ourdonors, supporters and partners for standing with the League tomake it possible for JLS members grow and to connect to thecommunity. We appreciate your generosity and ask for yourcontinued support.
Gratefully,
Susie Turner

The Junior League of Springfield’s mission and projects are inresponse to the “red flags” outlined in bi-annual the CommunityFocus Report (CFR). The report was started in 2003 when leadersfrom JLS, Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce, Springfield-Greene County Library District, Community Foundation of theOzarks and the United Way of the Ozarks pledged to develop acommunity livability report that identifies the “Blue Ribbon”(strengths) and the “Red Flags” (challenges) in eleven differentsectors of our community.
In 2013, this partnership published the sixth edition, “Focus 2013”.It looked at the community’s strengths and weakness over the pastten years of assessments. The report is now recognized as aprimary resource for guiding initiatives and decision-making for theentire community. JLS and CFR partners release the report as partof The Children’s Summit bi-annually. Distinguished speakers, including JLS President Susie Turner, gathered for a panel in the Fallof 2013 to discuss the issues.
This year, the report drew the attention of the Association of JuniorLeagues International. As a result, the Junior League of Springfieldwas given the opportunity to present the CFR at the nationalmeeting in St. Louis in the summer of 2014. JLS was highlightedon the topic of “Collaborative Community Impact”.
The report is one of the reasons JLS choose its signature initiative. The “report card” identified child abuse and neglect in thecommunity at a rate that was almost double the state average. Thisresulted in the decision to design, build and develop a crisis nurseryas a tool to end the cycle of abuse and neglect in families throughearly intervention. That facility, Isabel’s House, the Crisis Nursery ofthe Ozarks, opened its doors to the community in 2007, and, todate, it has served more than 2300 children and 1200 families.

Plaid Door Resale Boutique
Voted as the 2014 Best Resale Shop by 417 Magazine, the
Plaid Door is the Junior League of Springfield’s second
longest running fundraiser. Owned and operated by JLS
since 1976, the boutique resale shop is located at 1920
East Sunshine. JLS members are asked to donate new or
gently used clothing items and accessories to the shop.
It’s also the easiest way for the community to support JLS
by dropping off items and buying things at the shop. JLS
members are also asked to volunteer at the shop for
several hours each year. The Plaid Door uses its own
Facebook page to reach customers and promote new
items at the store. All the proceeds from the shop go to
support League projects, especially the League’s
signature project, Isabel’s House, the Crisis Nursery of
the Ozarks. The Plaid Door has raised more than $2
million for the Springfield community.
Charity BallJunior League of Springfield hosted the 55th annual Charity Ball on April 26, 2014 with a “Jewel of the Nile” theme. Supporters gathered at theRamada Oasis Convention Center for an exotic evening inspired by the beauty of ancient Egypt. Guests enjoyed an elegant dinner, a selection ofdrinks, a live auction and a Maxon’s Diamond Merchants raffle. The 310 attendees danced late into the evening to the music of “Sequel Dose”. JLSwould like to thank all sponsors and attendees, who helped raise more than $74,000 for projects supported by the League.
JLS Fundraising 2013-14
CookbooksStill continuing to be a fundraiser
for JLS are the League’s
cookbooks. More than $350 was
raised by volunteers selling dozens
of the books at several events
throughout the Ozarks in 2013-
2014. There are two cookbooks
the Junior League of Springfield
has crafted. “Sassafras” the
original book and “Women Who
Can Dish It Out”. The women on
the cookbook committee market
these two books, and also sell
cookbooks from other Leagues
around the nation. They trade our
books for theirs and JLS keeps all
the proceeds. These books are
very popular at holiday time and
make wonderful and unique gifts.
