Being a poor Black girl in very rural North Carolina I

have experienced things that were considered, “out of

my reach.” Things in my life were made possible

because there were people that believed in me. These

folks loved, pushed, encouraged and didn’t give up on

me. Their tenacity allowed me to do some pretty neat

stuff. But nothing compares to the pleasure it would

have given me to see my Dad’s grin as he saw this

picture of me meeting with the President of the United

States this past July at a reception in McLean, Va.

This one was for you, Daddy!

Where’s Jesse? For the past several months Mr. Jesse Mason,

COO has become acting Project Manager for the RIA, IL location.

As the days go by, we continue to learn and grow on this journey we

call LSS-RIA. Not only has this been and incredible learning

experience but an incredible opportunity for JLMI as well. We do

have high hopes of Jesse’s return soon.

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

As all of you may know, October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Breast cancer is a group of cells (malignant tumor) that starts in the cells of the breast and is the second

leading cause of death among women. Although it is rare, men can also be subjected to this disease; 2,190

men are diagnosed each year.

Most people who develop breast cancer will not be able to pinpoint one specific cause, although scientists

have learned much about risk factors that may indicate a stronger likelihood for cancer. The only fact

known is that cancer is always caused by damage to a cell’s DNA.

Statistics are just that. Some women that are at high risk for breast cancer never develop it and those with

breast cancer have no connection to the controllable risk factors.

Congratulations to our Summer intern, Destiny Chapman, this year for successfully completing the re-

quired amount of hours by the JOBS Program. Destiny did a great job with helping out in many areas this

summer but especially with the tedious task of scanning and emailing files to our data base. Destiny set a

goal for herself while interning with us and that was to answer the office phone at least once before leav-

ing. She exceeded that goal! Destiny brought a smile on her face everyday she was here and stepped up

to learn new things with enthusiasm. JLMI is actively involved in the JOBS Program and we look for-

ward to welcoming next Summer’s intern in June 2013.
