20 Jersey Journal – November/December 2012

‘All-round balance’ wins top NSW award

Brian Wilson says his New South Wales supreme champion Shirlinn Icy Eve does have a great frame and general confirmation, with an udder to match.

But he says it’s her all-round balance that enabled her to be the supreme all-breeds champion at this year’s Sydney Royal Easter Show.

Brian thinks that today’s top Jerseys show so much “dairyness” that it’s impossible for judges to go past them in inter-breed competitions.

“She’s a fairly correct sort of cow,” says Brian of his six-year-old champion. “She’s very easy to work with. She’s never any trouble, and she’s a great cow to show.”

The Wilsons plan to take Shirlinn Icy Eve to both International Dairy Week and back to the Sydney Royal next year, and will then consider using her in an embryo-transfer program.

But Shirlinn Icy Eve was herself conceived naturally after the Wilsons leased a bull from Ken and Margaret Atkins’ Kendale Stud on the NSW mid-north coast.

This continues a link between the Wilsons and the Atkins which began more than 90 years ago when Brian’s grandfather began breeding Jerseys at Gloucester near another family of Jersey breeders, the Atkins.

Brian’s father Lindsay moved the operation to Wingham after he married Shirley Atkins, and their Shirlinn stud

chalked up successes including five consecutive years of Sydney Royal Easter Show champions between 1984 and 1989.

But when Brian and his wife Vicki began to manage Shirlinn’s operations ten years ago, they moved the stud from the high-rainfall coastal zone to the drier tablelands climate at Tamworth, where they also began to produce hay and run Holsteins.

However, Shirlinn has now let most of its black-and-whites go after a direct comparison of Holsteins and Jerseys showed that the Jerseys were just more profitable in the Wisons’ faming system.

And the move to Tamworth certainly hasn’t hampered Shirlinn in show rings. It was the most successful exhibitor three years ago at Camden, in the NSW Holstein heartland west of Sydney.

Shirlinn was also the major prize winner at the Sydney royal the following year.

Brian is now also filling a casual vacancy for a NSW breeder on the board of Jersey Australia.

Brian says the move inland has given Shirlinn more options to expand. More nutritious grasses grown with irrigation help calf development and herd productivity.

He says he 2012 champion shows that Jerseys are continually evolving from the champions bred by his father and grandfather.

“She’s a very modern sort of cow,” he says. “She’s probably a little bit bigger than Jerseys were 20 years ago, and she certainly gives a lot more milk – 9000 litres per lactation.

21Jersey Journal – November/December 2012

“One of the pleasing things for me is that the Jersey cows that are winning at the shows are the sort of Jersey cows that are giving a lot of milk at home.

“They are cows that farmers admire when they go to the show for a look. They go home with the impression that the cows they saw at the show are the sort of cows they’d like to milk.

The highly-classified cows and the high-production cows are the same cows that are winning at the shows, and that’s really what we want.”

Brian says it’s hard to to ignore Jerseys in the inter-breed ring: “They are displaying so much dairyness, and it’s hard for the judges to ignore that.”

Shirlinn Icy Eve Exc 93 was sired by Kendale Big Time Ice, who has ancestors including Highland Duncan Lester and Rowantree on Ice.

Ancestors on her dam’s side include Valleystream and Claydon Park Flower Power.

Show-ring success fulfils Silky’s sale-ring potential

Pat Nicholson of Jugiong Jerseys says he could see a lot of potential in Craigielea Avery Silky when he first spotted her at the Northern Lights sale in northern Victoria in 2011. He though she could win a big show one day.

Less than 18 months later Craigielea Avery Silky has brought home the broad ribbon for Melbourne royal show inter-breed supreme champion on her first turn in a competitive show ring.

Pat says the five-year-old who has had three calves including one daughter is a very easy cow to work with who “did everything right” in Melbourne.

“She goes back to an imported cow from New Zealand - Hillock View Sultan Silky - that was very well known in the 70s,” says Pat. “She was bred with semen imported from the US. The dam of her sire was a very well known cow Circus, who was a very successful show champion in the US.”

Pat agrees that Craigielea Avery Silky brings together the best of American and Australasian Jerseys, and is part of the trend for show-ring success for high-producing cows. He says the champion is now producing 40 litres a day, and will easily top 8000 litres this season.

“She’s the sort of cow that other breeds will be looking at,” Pat says. “She’s the sort of cow that will be getting other breeders back into Jerseys.”

Thirty-nine-year-old Pat runs the Jugiong stud at Girgarre in Victoria’s Goulburn Valley with his parents Bill and Evelyn, his uncle Phillip and aunty Amy, and his younger brother Brendon, who is also the chairman of the Jersey Australia classification panel.

Pat is the vice-president of Victoria’s Northern Districts Jersey Breeders Club, and an inter-state show judge. He spoke to Australian Jersey Journal on his mobile between rounds of judging Holsteins in a South Australian show ring.

He agrees that there are good cows in all breeds, and recognises that Jersey breeders have plenty of work ahead of them to keep their cows on top in Australia.

“I think people are now identifying how profitable Jerseys are,” Pat says. “Jerseys also tend to be more fertile, and that’s helping.”

And he says the breed’s better environmental performance - with more efficient outcomes with land, water and carbon – will become increasingly important in the future.

Pat says Craigielea Avery Silky will be joined with American semen.

“If we could breed a herd like her, we’d be happy,” he says.

Craigielea Avery Silky Ex 91 was sired by Family Hill Avery Signature whose ancestors include Pleasant Nook F Price Circus and Highland Duncan Lester.

Her dam was Craigielea Jace Silky 2 VHC 90, whose ancestors also include Highland Duncan Lester, as well as Windy Willow Montana Jace and Craigielea Lesters Silky 3 STP 90.

28 Jersey Journal – November/December 2012

Eclipes-P, probably THE bull that opened the floodgates on polled usage, already has grandsons (sired by Motivation-PP) only days away from receiving their own genomic results for Select Sires Inc.

Here in Australia well credentialed cows such as Wallacedale Jace Melanie 4-ET Ex 92 STP6 are also adding polled sons to their list of achievements.

The latest crop of young sires includes sons of popular genotyped unproven sires such as All Lynns Louie Valentino-ET, as well as high ranking proven sires on JPI (Jersey Performance Index) sire lists such as BW Renegade (#2) and Tollnenaars Impuls Legal 223-ET(#9).

Another young sire-Validate P- will no doubt create a lot of interest as he is a maternal brother to Valentino-ET and has siblings that represent 5 out of the current top 10 JPI bulls in the USA after the August 2012 proof run.

SEMEX have released 4 new geno-typed young sires, declaring their intention to provide a variety of quality polled sires. Russell Gammon said that Semex has made a considerable investment in polled Jersey genetics, and that that was because those genetics were an important part of company’s evolving ‘Genetics for Life ®’ strategy. Russell added, “these four exciting polled bulls are but a part of our evolving strategy to offer the best in polled Jersey genetics”.

Of all the new genomic young sires, Semex’s Orthridge Da Bomb-P-ET with a JPI of 191, is the only polled sire yet to get close to Alta’s Schultz Legal Critic-P’s remarkable JPI of 243.

Both Da Bomb-P and Critic-P are sired by Legal (# 9 on the proven JPI list).Critic-P has been at the top of the polled

charts for well over a year and currently sits at #21 on the Genomically Tested (all Jerseys) Young Sires list by JPI, only 4 places below non polled sire Valentino (#17, JPI 248).

New Semex sire Dutch Hollow Vintage-P-ET is sired by Valentino and comes from the Chittenden bred ‘M’ family in his dam Mirage-P, (93pts with several 20 000lb milk records).

In keeping with proven families Semex’s Covington Milad-P is by Eclipes-P and comes from the well known Maid family. Sun Valley Prevue-P-ET presents an all right handed profile and continues the Impuls influence already established in the Jersey breed.

Russell said Semex had made an effort to provide genetic diversity with the new bulls representing ‘four distinct cow families and ten different sires represented among the twelve spaces in the three generation sire stacks.’

GJPI (Genomic Jersey Performance Index) GJUI (Genomic Jersey udder Index)

PL (productive life) DPR (daughter pregnancy rate)

The four new sires are –

• 200JE00212-Orthridge Da Bomb-P-ET (by Legal X Den-Kel Jace Lovabull-P X Paramount) - GJPI 191, GJUI 2.4, 933lbs milk, 49lbs fat and 40lbs protein, PL 4.6, DPR +0.6.

• 200JE00499-Dutch Hollow Vintage-P-ET ( by Valentino X Golden (Boy) X Berretta) - GJPI 175, GJUI 5.5, 816lbs milk, 30lbs fat, 27lbs pro, PL 5.5, DPR +0.4.

• 200JE00195-Covington Milad-P-ET (by Eclipes-P X Centurion X Lemvig)

GJPI 127, GJUI 3.9, 259lbs milk, 59lbs fat, 21lbs pro, PL 2.7, DPR -1.0.

• 200JE00215-Sun Valley Prevue-P-ET (by Eclipes-P X Impuls X Paramount) GJPI 130, GJUI 3.2, 606lbs milk, 59 lbs fat, 28lbs pro, PL 2.9, DPR -1.0. Semex proven polled sire SR Nathan

Pro-P has consolidated his place in the top 40 JPI sires with a JPI of 143, which is equal to that of non polled sire Riches Jace TBone A364. However Pro-P is placed one rank above TBone , having a higher $ figure in all CM,NM,FM catagories than TBone.[ CM (cheese merit), NM (net merit), FM (fluid merit)]

All four Semex sires have a higher DVG (Direct Genomic Value- an animals’ own individual genomic figure) for LPI(Lifetime Profit Index) than their parent average or Official Genomic Evaluation.

The disparity between a sires DVG and its’ parent average (the figure you see in a bull proof) is now being examined increasingly by breeders wanting to use all the figures to their advantage.

A recent assessment by ‘The Bullvine’ co-author Andrew Hunt suggested for example that of the 83 Holstein bulls that dropped after having daughter information included in their August proof, 80 of them had DVGs lower than their parent average.

Of the 33 that improved their proof with daughter information included, 30 of them had DVGs higher than their parent average, based on the Canadian sire proving system.

SELECT SIRES have also declared the same intention to supply dairyfarmers with a variety of quality polled sires. Dairy Sire Analyst for Select Sires Inc. Herby Lutz said ‘Polled is very important to Select and we continue to work to provide several options for breeders to have quality choices.’

However he added DVG’s were not listed in the USA, where research had indicated a combined figure including the dams’ genetic value aswell ,gave

Poll PositionJostling for pole position in the Polled Genetics race has well and truly begun after the

August 2012 proof release. The demand for polled genetics is now unmistakable. Even as Semex Alliance Jersey Program Manager Russell Gammon predicted earlier this year that breeders would see a ‘radical up swing in the quality’, for spectators on the sidelines the speed of genetic gain has been nothing short of spectacular. The Jersey breeds can do attitude is making every post a winner, and dairyfarmers are in a position to take full advantage of polled high index and type sires on offer.

the greatest benefit to their industry. In providing details of Selects’ current young polled offering he said the group of available and scheduled young sires all had a % of genomic value above their traditional parent average for JPI and other traits.

Select Sires will have one the first polled BW Renegade (#2 JPI) sons, Dutch Hollow Gentry-P to join its ranks in 2013.At the same time will also be River Valley Salina Solo-P-ET, sired by Eclipes-P but being a little different with a Jas Artist dam. Scheduled for November 2012 is Dutch Hollow Oliver-P, a Valentino son from one of the Chittendens’ favourite cows Olive (EX91pts and almost 20 000lbs milk), who is sired by one of their own in Dutch Hollow Mik-P.

October Super Sampler is Oomsdale Galen Ecl Garcia-P-ET, from 88% GR Oomsdale Cc Iatola Galen, followed by an EX 91% Country. Current Super Sampler is Her-Man Eclipes Master-P, an Eclipes-P son out of a TBone , that not only has an all right handed profile, but excels in rear udder height and dairy form in particular. ABS have a new polled arrival in All Lynns Eclipes Validate-P-ET, and this bull will generate a lot of interest no doubt. He is sired by Eclipes-P and out of D & E Paramount Violet EX90 (Paramount X Abe), dam of Valentino-ET.

Violet is having outstanding success with not only 5 out of the top 10 JPI daughter proven sires currently being her sons, but 7 of the top 27 are her sons, and include #1 JPI sire Vernon.

These 7 are sired by 4 different sires, and her polled son Validate-P completes sons by 5 different sires in current lists. On an all polled sire GJPI ranking he sits in 6th place himself, with another of her polled sons Vapour-P in 3rd spot. Vapour-P (Semex) is one of 3 sons she also has in the top 50 Young sires GPA (genomic parent average) for LPI August release. She has 59 male and female progeny currently listed. Validate-P also has an all right handed profile, and excels in production and in udder composite and rear udder height.

Jersey Show comes of ageThe Jersey show at the world’s biggest dairy event, World Dairy Expo (WDE), has come of age, according

to industry commentators who were at the Wisconsin event recently in the United States.

Held at Madison in the heart of the US dairy country the show included 2385 animals shown by 1234 exhibitors. The show’s 68,000 visitors (from 90 countries) included a large contingent of Australians.

Semex’s Jersey Programme Manager Russell Gammon (who has strong ties with Australian producers) was quick with his assessment after daughters of 10 different Semex sires finished in the top-10 in their classes in a Jersey show that included 448 animals.

“The quality in the Jersey show has grown to breath-taking levels – as numerous sharp-eyed Aussie Jersey folks who were ringside will testify,” Russell said.

“WDE now has international status and this evolution makes perfect sense as the Jersey segment of WDE’s dairy breed shows has grown so steadily and profoundly over the last decade.”

The show’s Grand Champion and Reserve Supreme Champion of All Breeds was the four-year-old, Arethusa Response Vivid-ET, owned by Arethusa Farm, of Litchfield, Connecticut.

She was a daughter of former World Dairy Expo Supreme Champion (2006)

and Reserve Supreme Champion (2004), Huronia Centurion Veronica 20J. The Reserve Senior and Reserve Grand Champion was a Bridon Remake COMERICA daughter, Random Luck Ray Helen.

Russell noted that Semex sires had a role in many of the other broad ribbon efforts, including Intermediate and Reserve Intermediate Champion, Reserve Junior Champion, Grand Champion of the Junior Jersey Show and Reserve Grand Champion of the Junior Show.

“We were thrilled that daughters of six of our sires wore championship rosettes in the strong open and junior shows. In fact, the Championship classes were essentially a Semex store window of high level fashions,” Russell said.

“The most exciting was that the daughters of Lencrest BLACKSTONE, Bridon EXCITATION, Select-Scott MINISTER and Bridon Remake COMERICA are all relatively young animals, who appear destined for repeat victories and success.

“Lencrest Blackstone continues his steady climb to all-time classic sire status by siring fancy cattle with a true will to work. It astounds us how high his batting

average is and his biggest fans are those who have already dipped into his enticing gene pool.

“To have Reserve Champions in daughters sired by Blackstone, Comerica and Excitation is a great sign that they will continue to sire champions tomorrow.

“We look forward to more results by daughters of these and other Semex sires in November at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, in Canada, Then it will be time to watch out for International Dairy Week in Australia.”

Travelling the world as Global Director of Corporate Programs

for Alta Genetics, Charlie Perotti advises on dairy profitability, genetic development, personnel development and management, sales and marketing, and large progressive dairy project development. He has access to both emerging and established dairy industries and has witnessed the revolution that is taking place in dairying across the globe.

In Eastern Europe, countries like Ukraine and Kazakhstan have a growing middle-class demanding quality dairy product. They are becoming wealthier through sales of oil and gas to Western Europe.

Russia too has the desire to increase dairy output and India is now looking to move away its traditional, low production system to high tech, high productivity dairying systems.

“We are very involved in China where they are building a quality dairy industry,” he said.

“They are hungry for knowledge but we have to remember they are really first generation dairymen.

“Many of them have come off 10 cow, hand milking farms so they know little about managing a 5000 cow enterprise. But they do want to learn.”

The fast moving global industry that these emerging countries are entering will see them rapidly adopting the technological improvements developed in the West and adopted over several generations.

These newcomers will adopt genomics, synchronisation, sexed semen and other advances and rapidly reap the rewards of genetic gain and high productivity.

Genomics the ‘game changer’ “Genomics is a ‘game changer’,” said

Mr Perotti. “The US and Canada started building the bovine genomic database in 2003 and by 2007 there was an unofficial genomic evaluation on bulls which added about 10% to their general reliability.

“Today, just five years later, the general reliability of a young bull using

genomics alone is 76-82%. The speed of genomic progress has tripled. Today 50% of joinings in the US are to genomic-only bulls. They don’t want to be left behind.

“The Chinese and Russians won’t develop their own genomic databases; they’ll simply adopt the North American database. After all, it’s a global industry; the bovine genome is a global entity which we can all use and contribute to.”

China’s untapped potential The Chinese dairy industry has huge

untapped potential for Australian dairy farmers, according to Mr Perotti.

“Here is a country of almost one and a half billion people with a growing demand for dairy protein. China is not going away, not for a long time,” he said.

“Too many Australian dairy farmers I meet think of China as a short term market.

“It’s not, it’s a business opportunity and you guys have that opportunity.

“We in the US don’t, because current export protocols don’t allow us to sell live cattle to the Chinese.”

He compares the massive scale of the Chinese market with the Saudi dairy industry back in the 1970s. The Saudis imported US and Australian genetics and built an industry from nothing. Now they supply most of their domestic needs and export to other countries in the Middle East. Saudi Arabia has a population of 25 million, about 60 times smaller than China.

The opportunities in the Chinese market alone should be enough to convince Australian dairy farmers of the need to maximise their reproduction programs because, as Mr Perotti observes, each Australian straight bred cow is a potential profit unit for both milk and for producing saleable offspring.

“I often come across dairy farmers saying “if she’s not pregnant we’ll carry her over” but this is not profitable. Reproduction drives profit through average milk per cow per day. Growth

Global dairy expansion a major business opportunity for Australian farmers

If you think the changes we have experienced in the Australian dairy industry over the past 20 years have been big and fast, Alta Genetics’ Charlie Perotti might reply: “you haven’t seen anything yet!” Mr Perotti, who has been a regular visitor to Australia for the past four years, travels the world advising on dairy management and reproduction efficiency. He sees rapidly growing demand for dairy products and new high tech dairy industries popping up like mushrooms all over the world. All this means more opportunities for established dairying countries like Australia if they are prepared to grasp them.

Maximising reproduction drives profit through average milk per cow per day and growth in livestock inventory says Charlie Perotti, Global Director of Corporate Programs for Alta Genetics.

Page 16: jj1212b

33Jersey Journal – November/December 2012

in livestock inventory comes as an added bonus. In the US bankers ask me ‘how many peaks will this farm have per month?’ A cow will only hit her maximum peak milk after having another calf. The number of cows coming into full production each month drives milk volume per cow per day.”

Maximising the number of pregnancies

Advanced synchronisation programs now offer dairy farmers the opportunity to create the maximum number of pregnancies in a six week joining period.

“There’s no heat detection, no palpating cows and no need for induction. With three opportunities to get them in calf you should expect a 70%+ in calf rate,” Mr Perotti said. “The first time you run a synch program it seems like hard work but when you’ve done it once you find you’re running the dairy operation differently – more efficiently and more profitably.

“If you’re running your dairy as a business you have to have an aggressive

reproduction program with a minimum number of carryover cows. Then you can cull on profitability and select which animals to sell and which to keep on their true performance.”

Culling on profitability rather than because a cow is empty ensures the best cows are retained in the herd and genetic gain is maximised. While genetics drives profitability, a carryover cow is an unjustifiable cost.

“By six months a carryover cow is almost 200 days in milk. Her reproductive potential doesn’t get any better the longer she’s left. In fact, the quality of her eggs deteriorates the longer she’s left,” Mr Perotti said. “More peaks, more calves, no carryovers – that should be our aim. I tell my clients to get serious about reproduction – it drives your profit.”

Making a call on non-performing bullsSelecting, rearing and progeny testing

bulls is a major business activity for genetics companies and bull fertility and management has been a special challenge as competition increases and margins

become tighter. Recently, Alta Genetics changed its approach to bull management to meet these new challenges. Using data gathered from a number of core partner herds, the company concluded that bulls that didn’t produce quality semen by 16 months of age were not going to improve.

“In the past we kept a bull on, based on his parentage and our expectations of him, in the belief he would eventually provide good quality semen,” said Mr Perotti. “But what the partner herd data told us quite clearly was that this was not so. If they didn’t perform by 16 months they weren’t going to improve.”

Managing bull fertility is another key driver in the global dairy revolution, according to Mr Perotti. Using a synch program results in an incremental increase in the in calf rate at each joining. Using sexed semen on virgin heifers produces a higher percentage of heifer calves. Genomics brings forward genetic gain. Utilising the full suite of advanced breeding technologies has a compounding effect which adds significantly to dairy farm profitability.

The world’s most profitable cow just got even better.
