CHAPTER2:HAND TOOL (FILES)
INTRODUCTION
A file is used to reduce the thickness or thin a metal. A file can also be used to shape and smooth a flat, convex and
curved metal surface. Files are available in various types, sizes and shapes based
on the need and applicability to the work. Files comes in 150mm,200mm,250mm and 300mm lengths. Files are named according to the shape of its cross section.
Angle of single cut is 60° and 80° crossed of double cut. Single cut files are used for soft metal and double cut files are
used for slightly hardened metals.
PARTS OF A FILE
Methods of filing
Straight filing
Make sure the file is clean before starting. The file can be easily cleaned with a brush. One trick is to rub chalk into the teeth of a new file to prevent the teeth from clogging. Chalking also helps to prevent pinning (tiny particles of fillings that wedge between the teeth) that can scratch the work.
SAFETY MEASURES
Ensure that the handle of the file is tight Grip the work piece tight to the vice Do not push forward too fast when filing Don’t use a file without a handle
