BEACH BRATZ

Reporter: Babz Maxwell

Beach Bratz wrap-up

Part 1 of 2

Well, Bratz, it’s been an amazing 2 years with the NRC, and our wings, here. I thought I would catch you all up on some of our accomplishments. And it seems only fitting I start with our leader.

After building a palatial mansion, Leslie Schmitt decided to enter the entrepreneurial arena, peddling sparkly baubles to the local ladies. Her dazzling smile and adorable Minn a SO ta accent catapulted her to fame as owner of MOOSETRAX jewelry, and her designs are spotted on cruise ships everywhere. Her husband Jay travels the world with her when he is not busy filming his series THE TARPON STALKER, which airs Tuesday nights on ABC.

Bill Skarnikat rules Trivia in SW Florida. He is now required to quaff tequila shots for every correct answer until he has the IQ of a pool noodle, just to give the rest of us a sporting chance. His wife Pam is on a 10 day SHOP YOUR WAY THROUGH THE CARRIBEAN cruise, and too busy for comment.

Board Treasurer Tom Reiser succumbed to temptation and was last seen in the Maldives, without fear of extradition, after absconding with the NRC funds. He is reportedly rocking a luscious tan, a Rolex on one arm and a hot babe on the other. (FYI, that Rolex looks a LOT like one we picked up at Flea Masters last month….)

After purchasing a Mercedes, a Mini-Cooper, and ginormous riding mower, Tom Driscoll opened up his own dealership on Santa Barbara. He was also a regular on the Saturday night Del Prado dragstrip. Sadly, it all came to an end, when he was caught on his mower with a cooler full of open containers left over from the NRC dance. You can visit him every other Thursday from 2-4 down at County lock up. Sue went on to open her own vegan restaurant, THE TOFU SHANTY, in Naples, featuring her Crispy Sea Grape Salad and a full hummus bar.

Jim and Teri Martin found they loved RV life and started their own travel business, doing guided trips across the US and Canada.

That is, until they were forced to return the RV to its rightful

owner. Teri is also known for her popular cookbook: ‘1001 ways to prepare Mangos’.

Discovering the joys of Mahjongg, Shari Hively and Corrine Larson teamed up to introduce the game to the masses, and are currently the opening act for the World Poker Tour.

Stay tuned next month when I wrap this up and let you know what the other full-timers are up to! Until then, stay FABULOUS!

CORKSCREWERS

Reporter: Leslie Vaughan

Call me crazy, but is that a little cool weather I'm feeling? I think it is. 'Tis Autumn here in Paradise. Sunset Celebration is back in full swing. Our Snowbirds are returning slowly, but surely. All of these are good things. The Corkscrewers continue to be an active and fun group. We've traded the golf outings for Wednesday bowling and lunch. That's something that is being enjoyed by several. I suspect as the weather gets a bit cooler, the golf get-togethers will begin again. Who knows? We may throw caution to the wind and do both! Our ladies tried to have lunch at Time to Eat on Del Prado, but alas, it was closed the day we went. Our bad luck was Anthony's good fortune as we walked over and had a nice meal there. Maybe we'll try Time to Eat again at a later date. We plan to have our monthly celebration dinner at El Tarasco. Several folks from our group have been traveling a bit. There have been Hawaiian cruises, trips to visit grand children, dog sitting for friends, cruises to the Caribbean...you name it! We're up for any and all adventures. It's so hard to believe that most of us have been here for only 2 years. We've really enjoyed making life long new friends and embarking on our retirement. A person could get used to this life! The good life, indeed.

pattern? Hhmm... Several of us regular bocce players have taken the summer off. The weather is starting to shift towards fall, so it might be time to get at it again. We Flip Flop ladies have expanded our bowling group so that we have up to eleven of us sharing lanes every Thursday. We are definitely a rowdy bunch! Ceil Buss arranged an historic tour of the women legends of Ft. Myers for our bowling group. It was a beautiful day for a walking tour and we learned an awful lot about the women who started the first library, school, hospital etc. in Ft. Myers. It just goes to prove that women rule! We have some November birthdays to mention; Annie Fenkell, Matt Heyden, Stuart McDonald, Tony and Cindie Matusicky and Diana Simpson. Have a great November everyone!

The Funseekers are having so much fun and are so busy that they haven’t had time to send news in!! The little bit of news is:

Anne, Rex, Dana and Terry are having fun on their Panama Canal cruise! JoAnne wanted to thank all of the Funseekers for her get well flowers- she hopes that she will be well enough to see everyone soon. Julie is starting the hunt for exterior paint for the house. Unfortunately electric lime has been voted down by Jeff!!

SUN RAYS

Reporter– Barb Swann

Ah, the cool, fresh feeling of fall. Mornings have been wonderful! I can always look at pictures of the leaves turning, don’t need to go back north to see them. And we can actually turn off the air conditioning. But Marlene reminds us that fall is also time to get your flu shot!

Jane and Nick hosted a wonderful Potato Potluck. Good spuds, good company. Thanx Jane and Nick. Several Sun Rays hula..ed their way through the dinner dance, enjoying the Pig Roast. Some Sun Rays and friends spent a morning in downtown Ft. Myers, enjoying a walking tour of the historic women in Ft. Myers’ past. Very interesting. Had a nice lunch.

Lots of travel going on this fall: Louise on her River Cruise, Lillian and Gary going to China, Ceil and Marlene heading north to family. I’m sure there’s a lot more going on. Let me know what you are up to.

Watch out for Speedy Neil. He has been out boating, and from his story, it was quite memorable. Ask him about it.

Marlene, Barb, and some other NRC friends enjoyed dinner and dancing at the Moose Club. Good music and dancing also at the Tiki Hut. Hope to see you there. Other Sun Rays enjoyed an evening of Bunco. Thanx Linda and her friend, Barb. Bowling is still quite popular, and some of the girls are actually getting pretty good! Let me know what you have been doing.

HULA HOOTERS

Reporter: Alan Poland

Ok, who gives a hoot? The Hula Hooters do when they are together having fun in the sun. It could be the whole flock at pot luck dinners or sipping on Bloody Marys and Mimosas at Page and Bruce’s recent brunch; or just a few couples hooting it up on the beach. Did you hear the big hoot at the first sunset of the season? That was the Hooters soaking up the last rays of the day. Several Hooters also have been making big noise on the golf greens where there are more holes than on a vacant lot. Hooters love to dance too. They gathered to break bread and drink at the Elks Club to listen to the fine sound of Barbara Dexter. The Lady Hooters continue to have scrumptious luncheons hooting it up without their mates. They also enjoy Bunco and have started a Ladies Book Club to show how serious they are. Don and Sandy Smith invited the flock to a pot luck dinner The theme was to dress or bring a “dish” that represented their home state. And the Hooters continue to celebrate a member’s birthday by somehow flying in overnight a flock of flamingos to decorate their front lawn. It sure is a hoot to wake up to the Pink Flock. All over the Cape Hula Hooters can be heard giving a loud and enthusiastic Hoot, Hoot, Hoot! and shouting “Life is good!”

CORAL CAPERS

Reporter: Kim Garrity

Fall is in the air, you can feel the cooler temperatures and less humidity in the evening and early morning. Our groups has been together for one year now. Time has flown and we have gained a wonderful group of friends. Our last potluck was held at Anne and Ed's home. We had a wonderful evening, enjoyed a lot of wonderful food and drink. Thank you Anne and Ed. The ladies of Coral Capers, BBB monthly luncheon met at The Tarpon Lodge on Pine Island, all enjoyed the trip. Janet and Gary went on the Wicked Dolphin Rum tour, they really enjoyed the tasty samplings and bought a couple bottles. Serena's sister Beth and friend Sandy both have moved to Cape Coral and have joined the NRC. Welcome ladies, you will have lots of fun and make new friends. Sandy and Mark are back from visiting family up north.

NAUTI CRABS

Reporter: Chris Gust

Happy Anniversary Nauti Crabs! It is hard to believe that it has been one year since our first get together. Remember the tension trying to socialize with people you’ve never met. How do you start the conversation? Where to begin? It takes some time to get to know one another. Trying to find a group that fits and likes to do what you enjoy. Not all groups are the same but there are so many activities that NRC provides you can’t go wrong. So many people to meet all in the same boat moving to Florida. And now look at us... so much has happened. We made it through a summer and survived the threat of two hurricanes, one tornado and with luck no zika virus. Potlucks galore, dinner and dances, trip to Key West, bowling, bocce, boat tours, ladies luncheons, men’s breakfast, birthdays, sunsets, and beach days, shopping, golfing, and this is just the first year. We have been blessed. Happy anniversary.

PARTY PALMS

Reporter: Ted and Carolyn Clark

Snowbirds, are you excited about the forthcoming winter in Florida? Do you look forward to the lack of snow, cold

winds and icy roads, the flu, monster snowstorms, power outages, waking up in the dark and coming home in the dark?.... wait - forget the last two. In either case, the

Pelicans of Party Palms look forward to the return of our northern members although it would be great if they didn’t bring so many of their friends with them. So Snowbirds, what happened to the Pelicans while you were absent? Charo had surgery to correct a shoulder problem which her husband Bobby claimed was the result of practicing to get into the Chicago Cubs pitching rotation if needed. Patti (the Virginia one) and an honorary Party Palm, is facing a wonderful situation – selling her home in Virginia that is experiencing a bidding war. Bud and Rhonda and Terry and Sherry are taking the ABC boating course offered by the CC Power Squadron to become familiar with SWFL boating regulations. Kathy Conway is back and we’re particularly excited because she promised to host a Thanksgiving dinner for the poor - us! Carolyn and Ted travelled North for their niece’s wedding to (wait for it) ……. Topsail Island, off the coast of North Carolina just ahead of Hurricane Matthew! They’ve lived in FL for a while but had to leave the state to experience a hurricane – scary. Also Ted and Carolyn were delighted by a visit from Ted’s son and granddaughter from Connecticut. Bud and Rhonda are planning a pumpkin carving party and we really look forward to it and Margaret (another honorary Party Palm) hosted a taco party which was delicious and a fun time. Rhonda planned to lead a Ladies October's designer purse bingo event at Fathoms Restaurant & Bar at Cape Harbor but it was rescheduled due to the hurricane. Carolyn was elected to the NRC Board as Hospitality Chair and is busy planning to host the first “newcomers social” for new members. Dale will be stepping down as Hospitality Chair after 6 months and has done a magnificent job. Al will remain as Newsletter Chair and serve for 6 more months. Eve has again designed an outstanding Party Palms centerpiece – it was quite ghoulish. Several of the Party Palms attended another exciting wine tasting adventure at the Waterside Wine Club in Cape Harbor because as they say at the Wine Club “Quiet nights by the pool don’t make memories” and as we say “parties make memories!”

August Pot Luck was held at Nancy and Dave Harmon’s home. There was so much food it was incredible. They have a lovely home and everyone had a good time. Bridgette talked about getting a wine and art party together. Kathie Chaney talked about the Cape Coral Brewing Company where they run 0.0 miles and proceeds go to Rotary. Paint a Picture activities were held in September. Emily and Steven Main went to the Lighthouse and Pincers Crab Shaq for meals, they had great atmosphere and the food was delicious. The next Pot Luck will be at Tammy and Lori’s home for September. Kathie Chaney has been collecting money

for name tags for everyone in the group. Thanks Kathie for doing on the work on nametags. Cape Coral Oktoberfest will be held at the German American Social Club on Pine Island Road October 21-23 and October 28-30. Every year in October the Club organizes Munich In Cape Coral. The Oktoberfest is the largest party of the year in the community. They have many different foods and merchandise for sale at this event. Domestic and German beers are served. Music is on several stages with dancing. You may google Oktoberfest and find a schedule of events. Emily and Steven Main attended last year and saw the famous Clydesdale horses. The ladies luncheon was held at The Bone-Fish restaurant this month and as usual everyone had a wonderful time. I hope everyone had a good month and look forward to seeing you at upcoming NRC events.

This month’s newsletter is an addition to last month because the one I wrote last month was not put in the newsletter. I have been gone for two weeks this month so I do not have a lot of new news. I traveled to the Midwest to see my family and had a great time with grandkids. The weather was fall beautiful and it was a nice break from the heat and humidity. Steven Main, Linda Turner, Don, Dale and others went to Dixie Roadhouse and ate prime rib and had a great time. September’s pot luck was held at Tammy and Lori’s home. Their house is absolutely beautiful and we had lots of great food. We all laughed a lot. I know some of our group went to Cirque du Soleil. That is all I have to report this month. I hope you all are having a great time involved with NRC activities.

Hi Everyone:

A few things the Parrots have done since last newsletter.

Myself and Mike along with Jim and Lil Fitz-Gerald graduated from our CERT classes.

Myself, Jim and Lil also took CPR class with the Fire Department to be certified.

We had a great potluck at Jim and Lil’s house. We had Heather from CERT come and talk to whole group and got more people to sign up for classes. We had a great variety of finger foods and Lil made some of her homemade family Irish Cream.

I am in Philadelphia from 14 to 18th with my hubby Mike. Here for Greek family wedding. Lots of fun seeing family and all. Just can't wait to come back home to Cape Coral.

BAD BUOYS & NAUTI GULLS

Reporter: Michele McKay

WE HAVE OURSELVES A WINNER!!! Anne competed in the Tropical Open Water Swim at Siesta Key in Sarasota and took First Place for swimming the 1k. Awesome job!

We welcome back Stella who spent 6 weeks with family in Italy. We missed you when you were away.

Dave and Martha traveled up north to visit family and friends. Dave has returned but Martha is still busy in New Hampshire playing with Bennett, their grandson, who just turned one.

With the holidays approaching others will be traveling to gather with family. Safe travels to everybody and make sure you come back with stories and pictures for the others who stay behind holding down the fort, here in the Sunshine State.

Oh, we have been very busy. Some BB & NG ladies enjoyed each other’s company for breakfast at the Boat House. Thanks to Jennifer for organizing it. Cape Cabaret brought us together for some laughs and a little dancing for a tribute to the Temptations. How about an evening celebrating Cape Coral’s beautiful sunset with live music and good friends at the Sunset Celebration? And last but surely not least, we enjoyed Pot Luck at Don’s and Regina’s beautiful home. Or was it May’s and Agnes’ house? Regardless, we all had fun!!

Good food, great friends, fun times, laughs, songs, yells, cheers and even a few tears ….

Bad Buoys and Nauti Gulls is an evolving group of individuals who truly enjoy and appreciate each other’s company. Regardless of the venue, we find a way to laugh and enjoy. As time passes we are getting to know

each other more as we open up and share more of ourselves with each other…. the formula for strong and long friendships.

Thank you NRC!

Twisted Turtles

Reporter: Barbara Strand

As one of the newest groups to the NRC, the Twisted Turtles started out with a bang with approximately 50 members. Our New Member Social was held at Dale Ford’s house where we were treated to a variety of appetizers and drinks. Dale and Pat welcomed us to the NRC and explained the program.

Our first potluck was held at David and Suellen’s home. It was kind of like a first date…a little awkward at first, but by the end of the evening we were telling lies and exchanging phone numbers. Maybe it was just the alcohol, but everyone seemed to have a great time! We all voted on our new group name and chose a Group Leader, David Sim, and a Group Reporter, Barbara Strand, who shortly thereafter went into the Witness Protection Program and haven’t been seen since.

Our group Facebook Page was set up by David Sim, the tech wizard that he is, and a majority of our members have signed up. We also designed our group logo and name tags and are working on a team shirt so no one can miss us even if we show up at functions with Groucho Marx glasses and Dolly Parton wigs.

Several of us attended the Pig Roast which was a total blast! The food was fantastic and we danced the night away to Dusk, a terrific band who packed the dance floor. No one can cut a rug like the Twisted Turtles!

Next on the agenda was the Big Blue Brewery tour and Wicked Dolphin Rum tour. And what incredible tours they were ! For those of you who have never attended, it is highly recommended. In fact, my bathtub looks like the perfect spot to brew a batch or two now that I know the secrets. I’ll let you know how it turns out.

Our next get-together will be on October 23rd at the Octoberfest where we will no doubt be doing shooters from the rooftops or at least sharing a beer or two.

NRC MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

November 2016

Gary Eldred

President, Board 99

Greetings NRC Members and NRC Graduates! My name is Gary M. Eldred and I would like to introduce myself as the 99th President of the NRC of Cape Coral. The Board and I look forward to serving you for the next six months. My theme is BE ACTIVE, GIVE BACK, VOLUNTEER! As a brief introduction, I am originally from upstate New York. After graduating from Slippery Rock University near Pittsburgh, I stayed in that area for the next six years. Deciding that winter was no longer something I wanted to endure, I started moving south, first to South Carolina then North Carolina. That is where I met my wife, Marne, fifteen years ago while playing coed, slow-pitch softball, sponsored by a social club similar to the NRC. After a few years in Charlotte we decided to venture out and accept an overseas assignment to Puerto Rico -- a fantastic adventure that awakened the international travel bug in us. So next was Shanghai, China; Charleston, SC; El Jadida, Morroco; and finally London, England. All told, we spent eight years on the road and enjoyed every minute. After a 37-year career, achieving the level of Project Controls Director, I officially retired three times before permanently settling in Cape Coral. I have enjoyed becoming very active in our Cape Coral community. I volunteer at Lee Memorial Hospital, Meals on Wheels, and attend Cape Coral City Council Meetings. Most recently I enrolled in the twelve-week course (one day a week) called Citizens Academy, which gives you in-depth knowledge of how all City Departments operate. This is a free course and I encourage you to look into it if interested. My other interests include golfing, boating, working around the yard along with supporting and fostering the Pug Rescue of FL. Although, one of my favorite activities are social get-togethers with the NRC and our group (Hula Hooters). I welcome all input from NRC members. This is YOUR club. It does not operate cohesively without the support of ALL its members. To Friends, Fun and Laughter! Gary Eldred NRC President, Board 99
