Jason Miles: I got the second row mezzanine tosee Jimi Hendrix with the opening act Sly & TheFamily Stone. I had heard some of their stuff, Ihad heard some of their songs. But the albumdidn’t really jump. But then “Dance to the Mu-sic” came out and Sly opened up for Hendrix. They came out everyone was kind of booing.

They didn’t want Sly, they wanted Hendrix. They started playing. I forgot the song. The

place just went “Whoa, wow, these guys arereally good.” Everybody was diggin’ them. Theywere dancing across the stage—Larry Grahamand Freddy. They got an amazing reception and Igot really hooked into them. The followingmonth they played at the Electric Circus and wewent there to see them—the midnight show—and I was really into Sly because they were sofunky. I followed them. They had great songs. Iwas a Sly fan and everything and then the wholething happened all of this stuff. I made the trib-ute album to Grover. People just don’t under-stand, I don’t just grab this stuff out of the hat.

This was stuff that all had an affect on my life.Ivan [Lins] … Miles Davis was going to do thatalbum and he died and I decided to do it becauseMiles wanted me to perform on the album thathe was going to do with Quincy. Weather Re-

port—the most influential group in my life. Zaw-inul was my friend for thirty something years, you know? Marvin Gaye. Herbie Mann. Thesedays, in order to have any chance, you needrecords with a serious hook. You need a really

good marketing hook. If you don’t have thatnobody is going to be interested in you. So whathappened with the Sly album was that one night,I was doing my typical thing, watching a ballgame—the Knicks of course. I put on my head-

phones that I had on my Ipad and I had it onshuffle and “Family Affair” from Sly came up. Iwas like, “Man, I haven’t heard this in so longand I love this, and I started hearing it techni-cally.” I forgot how much I loved it and the nexttune that came up was a tune by Roberta Flack,“Feel Like Making Love.” I thought I should do“Family Affair,” with a Global Noise vibe andget Roberta Flack to sing it. So I called upRoberta the next day, “We’re about doing thisalbum of Sly tunes, like 21st Century.” She said,“I’m in. I’m in, I don’t care, Jason I trust you.You want to do this.” Next thing you know she’slike, bang in the studio with me, she’s singing it,I’m going, “This could work, this could work, oh

yeh, and then I put our singer Falu on it doinglike Indie Rock and stuff in between, with JayRodriguez on sax, really funky. I called up myfriend Steve Wolf, great drummer. He’s playedwith Grover and Annie Lennox and all thesegreat people. He said, “You gotta get Greg Er-rico, the cat that played this stuff.” So I friendedhim on Facebook and the next thing I know, hegets back to me. So I’m at the airport gettingready to go to a gig. The flight was delayed. So Icalled him and spoke with him for an hour andhe said, “everybody has tried this Sly stuff.” So I

said, “I have great respect for you, but if youhave a chance, just Google my name, go to mywebsite, check out what I’m doing.” He says,“OK.” He gets back to me and sasy, “Yeah man.

Nice Jason. I’m sorry I don’t know you. Well, keep me posted on this thing.” So I have allthese ideas and I started recording two moretunes after hooking up with Nona Hendrix again. After a few weeks, I get a phone call from GregErrico. “So you’re really doing this project, thisSly thing. I’d love to hear what you’re doing.”So I play it over the phone. He says, “This isgenius man. You did it. You nailed it man. You’re not Sly and the Family Stone, but you’reyour group — but you’re playing our stuff. What

can I do to help? I’m in, I’m into this.” So heended up playing on four songs, with the othercats like Dave Mathews, Ron Holloway, JayRodriguez on sax, Amanda Ruzza on bass,Adam Dorn on drums. By the way, one night Iwas playing with Miles at his house. I know thissounds crazy but, but I was playing with Miles athis house and we were trying to do differentstuff. I started playing, and Miles grabbed myhands and said, “Don’t play that shit, for me.” I

said, “OK man,” and I cut the number of notesdown a third. When I did that, he picked up hishorn and he started riffing with me. I was like, “Iget it, I get it. Don’t play too much.” Anyway, with the Sly project, I ended up going and talk-ing to people and saying, I’ve got little funding, what do you think? Everybody jumped on boardto help — Roberta, Nona, Falu, Maya Azucena, who has just totally stepped up her game on thisrecord ... Will Bernard, who is a very underratedguitar player. I was able to get the recordinglicensed through the world and we just came outin Japan.

JI: What was the first break that enabled you toget on this pathway and develop all of theseconnections and productions you’ve done for somany these amazing artists on the Jazz and the

     pop side of things?

JM: Well, you know, there is the musicaand then there is the life break. Which oyou think is more important?

    JI: Both.

JM: Well they are. They both kind of cowith each other. The life break was Janu1984—reconnecting with Michael Breckechael and I hadn’t seen each other for a We met by random at a sushi bar on a night by just accident, and on my wife’s

day. I just had gotten a deal where my l just had gotten me a $1,000 advance on of ours, but it cost me $5,000 to do the deareconnected with Mike and we started about our music. He was totally trying to gMidi synthesizers and everything, and we really hanging out. He was saying, “Youguy Jay, you are the guy, you are doing swas always into the synth-pop thing butinto Jazz also. Coming from New York we did, you understand, we were hybrid g

because there was so much music arounwant rock, you want folk, you want Jazz—all in New York. That was kind of my lMike starting telling all these people abo

and they started calling me. One night I wclub in New York and Lenny White camto me and wanted to do something wiMike was just hanging out one night and into New York but it was for only one nigthe next this I know, like a year later, Lenme, “Hey man, you know Marcus [MAnd I said, of course Marcus is on my f

bum. “We’re starting a new album tomorrohe’s going to call you, bring down you

board.” I said, “Cool.” Well, from that worked with Marcus Miller for ten yearshis basic right hand guy. I went everywhehim—and the big break of courseMiles’ [Davis] TuTu. It was a big  break b

that was so cutting edge. It was in 1986, never heard stuff like that before, nobody.

JI: What kind of discussions did you whaving with Miles when that broke for you

JM: Miles would be talking with MarcMarcus would go, “Yeah, yeah. OK Mileon…. [to Jason] He wants to talk with“Come over for tea or for coffee.” We bgreat friends, really great friends. He was

jor part of our life for like five years. We the sides of him. It was really deep. He lovwife. He just adored Kathy. It was a“Bring Kathy.” Kathy is a lyricist. Steacher but she’s also a terrific lyricist written wonderful songs for great artistsafter, I met Luther Vandross, who was ahuge influence on me … and then ChakaWhitney [Houston] and all these peoplmagic I did with the synthesizer was whme in it. I was at the right place at the rig

     — when everything was starting to pokeyboards and synthesizers. I was one elite guys that understood about it, andhow to do it. So that was a huge break. AI thought I could never get it.

JI: How did you go about getting your stufftogether on synthesizers?

JM: In 1972, Bob Moog came to my school, andwas just on stage with one little keyboard. It wasthe Mini-Moog. He said to me that I could playit during sound check—and I heard the freakingspeakers rattle. I went like, “Whoa, I like this

thing. I was always into the Fender Rhodes.Meeting Joe Zawinul and everything, and watch-ing his set up with the 2600s, and how he had hisRhodes set up with the Phase Shifter — I reallygravitated to that. People would tell me, “You’renot playing the changes man, you’re not playing

bebop and all this other stuff.” That’s not whereI was going. I love bebop. I studied bebop withMike Melillo in New Jersey, who was with PhilWoods at the time. I studied that. I got into BudPowell, and he turned me on to all this amazingmusic that I was just not familiar with — “PocoLoco” and all this great music. I studied thatstuff, and I met the Jersey Jazz guys — HarryLeahy and Phil [Woods]. We’d go out to the

Water Gap all the time with Al Cohn, Zoot Simsand Bill Goodwin. It wasn’t like I didn’t wantthat. It was just that that wasn’t my calling. That[Bebop] was a formation to help me with com-

position and music, and where stuff was goingand everything.

JI: That provided the harmonic sophistication

that you needed in order to be able to do thiskind of stuff.

JM: Then another album which totally changedmy life was  Everybody Digs Bill Evans. When Iheard that thing and I heard him play “Night andDay” and I heard how he approached the modalstuff and everything, “Peace Piece” — it justtotally took me. Then I got into Duke Ellingtonand the stuff from the ‘30’s. I used to listen tothat all the time and it’s how he put the stufftogether. I understood where Zawinul was com-

ing from. I met Joe and Wayne [Shorter]. I usedto go see them and we used to hang out. But Iwasn’t one of the guys in the forefront. So JoeZawinul treated me like a kid. Then I got the gigwith Miles and then all of a sudden, he wasreally nice to me.

JM: Suddenly you went from janitor to execu-tive vice president.

JM: Exactly. It was like, “How did you get that, man?” Well Miles had told Joe about me, but JoeZawinul could never give it up to anybody. Hewas too cantankerous. So you see this wholething in front of you and then you see the kind of

records that were being made, and the kinds ofrecords that were being made were the kinds ofrecords that I was needed on—where you had aMarcus Miller, who was a great arranger and

bass player. He was hearing this music in hishead but who was going to help him get it out?You know what I mean? Who was going to helphim get it out, or if he heard this thing as an

orchestra and it only sounded like an acchow could he get it out? How could he mhappen? Well, I was there and I understoohe was trying to do. My way of thinkingthe synthesizer and everything was likdifferent than anybody else’s. If som

bought the most popular thing on the madidn’t buy it. I bought the thing that was ent than everybody—that I had to learn ently to make it. That was how Tutu came

because it was made with very interesting ments, like the PPG Wave 2.3 and the Em

2 and the Matrix 12. These were instrumennot everybody was using, and I was able ate a very unique sound with it. Miles picon that. Tommy LaPuma picked up oMarcus [Miller] just kept on calling me anLuther [Vandross] started calling me anfrom that, it keeps on going. If your wgood, you keep on going. The day thatFinnerty got kicked out of Miles’ bansomething the whole scene was buzzing abAt the  same time, I’m on Miles Davis’ n

bum Tutu, Luther Vandross’ “Give Me thson,” David Sanborn’s, Straight to the HeaPeople don’t want to hear that, But , if I have f’d something up that day in the

when I was doing that, everybody woulknown. That’s the way it goes. Are we rewfor our good work? I don’t think so. IAmerica loves success, but it hates suc

     blessings instead of their own.

JM: That’s so true. No matter how I feel aboutall of my frustrations about where I’m at rightnow, I’m looking around, and many of myfriends are gone—Hiram Bullock, MulgrewMiller, Whitney Houston, George Duke. Imlucky, I’m pretty healthy, I’m in this beautiful

relationship, my wife I love her so much, youknow, we’ve been together for decades. To finda woman who will put up with this shit, is prettyunbelievable. She has hung with this stuffthrough everything. You can just be as good aswhat’s around you. You know, in one week in1989, I made so much money, it was freaking’crazy. I did, this run for like seven weeks whereI went from album to album, two weeks on this, two weeks with the Crusaders. It wound up withme being really tired in the studio working onMiles Davis’ album,  Amandla and so Miles wasin the studio playing. Kathy would come to pickme up. I would stay in the city at the ExcelsiorHotel and she would come in on Friday and pick

and what happened was she came to the studio, was always so happy to see her. Kathy’s not likea real hanger—you know. I’m with Miles andI’d be like, “Kathy what’s going on?” She’d go,“I’m back here, reading my book.” I’d ask her tocome out into the studio and I’d put my head onher lap as Miles was playing, I’d fall asleep. Thenext thing, I open up my eyes and Miles is star-ing at me. He says, “I sounded that good, huh?”I go, I’m so sorry and I think she stuck up for meand said, “He’s really tired.” It never took awayfrom my work. We could have left but we allwanted to stick around and hear Miles, and givehim support.

JI: Where did you go to college?

JM: I went to college at Indiana State Univer-sity. I was trying to go to the Manhattan Collegeof Music and that year my father had a heartattack. My family was really falling apart. Mygrandmother died. I was staying in New York. Itwas a disaster for me so it was really late andthat was a school that I could get into. I just did-n’t want to get drafted that’s all.

JI: You didn’t go out there to study music?

JM: Originally yes. But the music program and Ididn’t kind of mesh together. I was more pro-gressive and they were more traditional. I could-n’t get into Indiana at that point. But as timewent on, my education was me going and takingmy Bar Mitzvah money, and buying a Wurlitzer

piano, and putting it into my little apartment.Well, my thing was this. We were just a fewmiles away from the Columbia Record Club, where Kathy had a part-time job at the ware-house. Every month they would have the Colum-

bia Record Club sale for the employees and shewould get me in there and it was a dollar analbum.

JI: You must have been like a kid in a candy

    store.

JM: You had the rock section, which when thedoors opened up, a lot of people went there. Youhad the Country section, which was packed, andthen you had the Jazz and Folk section. Therewere about three people there. So what did I get?I got Kind of Blue, all the CTI albums and SevenSteps to Heaven, tons and tons of albums,Santana, all of the stuff. I would take themhome.

JI: When I first started listening to Jazz I wentinto Sam Goody’s at the Canarsie Mall. Mymother gave me fifteen dollars and I got, Can-nonball and the Boseria Sextet, Herbie Mann

Live at Newport  with Dave Pike, and Oscar Pe-terson and Sounds of the Trio and The Trio Livein Chicago, 1961—all of which I still listen tothis day. I didn’t even know what I was getting.

JM: Me too. The first album I bought, with myown money was, Boss Guitar by Wes Montgom-ery. I love Wes Montgomery because I used towatch,  Dial M for Jazz  on Channel 2 on Sundayat 4:30 with the Jazz Priest. Coltrane would beon there and Miles and Wes Montgomery and

Monk. All these cats would be on there all thetime. I just went crazy with the organ trio. Istarted studying with this organ cat.

JI: Did you graduate or did you come back to New York?

JM:  No, I came back to New York, in January,1974 and the third night in New York, I foundmyself at Mikell’s,  watching my sister’s boy-friend playing with the band at the club, and mycousin’s boyfriend was Don Grolnick. The bandwas the Joe Beck, David Sandborn, Will Lee,Don Grolnick and I believe, Chris Parker.

JI: That must have been a great night.

JM: Are you kidding me? I walked into the cluband they were playing this tune, “Cactus” andthat stuck with me forever that tune. It was“unbelievable.”

JI: Around that time, Joe Beck did an albumwith Joe Farrell and they did  Penny Arcade  doyou know that one?

JM: I have that album downstairs. Joe Farrell,Joe Beck, Herb Bushler and Jimmy Madison. Iremember that band a lot. I used to go see themall the time as a matter of fact, we were there onenight and Joe Farrell actually came up to me andKathy. I said, “We drove from New York. Welove this band. I’m a keyboard player in NewYork.” I had  Penny Arcade  with me and guesswhat, he signed it for me. The scene was very, very vibrant back then. But it was also an inces-tuous scene too. I had to break out and find myown voice and not live in New York. People saidI would never get sessions together. Luther who really showed me a lot about pop production and pop vocals, especially vocals. Ilearned a freaking world from Luther about re-cording vocals and making comps and all of thatstuff, very deep.

JI: What were your experiences like with Whit-ney Houston and Michael Jackson?

JM: They were kind of quick to be very honestwith you. Whitney was very easy. It really was

because Luther was producing Whitney. We

were putting together the song You’re My BabyTonight , and Whitney came in. In the beginning, she really didn’t sound so hot and everybodywas really nervous. Luther was really nervous.“What’s going on with her she doesn’t soundlike Whitney, Oh my God, what am I going todo?” Then she kept saying, “Let’s try it again.”We’d go back and then all of sudden, I don’tknow why, or how, but out of nowhere, thatfreaking voice just appeared and, it was like,Whoa! Oh my God, you know? Diana Ross wasthe same way [at the beginning of the session]. Itwas like, “Uh this is Diana Ross? Like an hourlater she sounds like freaking Diana Ross,

JI: I guess they needed to warm the pan a little bit.

JM: Whitney came in and she didn’t know meso I introduced myself. We were talking andlaughing a little bit and then Luther came walk-ing in. Of course, he said, “Whitney, is he both-ering you? Is he bothering you? Jase are you

bothering Whitney?” I’m like, “I don’t think so.”She says, “We’re having a good time.” He says,“One thing out of you man, I’m going to exileyou to the lounge.” “We’re cool,” she said, andhe said, “This is Jason. When you’re hearing thetracks, that’s all the stuff he does.” Whitney waslike, “Fantastic.” I told her I was thrilled to be on

her record. She was cool. This was young Whit-ney, pre-Bobby Brown. The Michael Jacksonthing was very interesting. I was really kind ofdone doing studio work. I just had done the US50th Anniversary album,  People  an animatedmovie, an album with all these big stars on it. Itwas my first major, major production that was

put in my hands and I got an Emmy nominationfor the theme song on it, “Children of theWorld.” It was really very cool. I was trying to

build myself up as a producer. One night I wasworking with this famous Greek singer and I geta call from the Hit Factory, “Hey Jason, myname is Brad Buckner, I’m Michael Jackson’smusical director. I got a thing that I heard that Igot to call you. We have a part in it too that isvery difficult. Nobody can get it and it reallyrequires some really specialized man to reallymake something great.” I said, I’ll be happy togive it a shot. He asked me to come in an hourand I said I had an artist on their way to myhouse that just came in from Switzerland, and Ihad to go and do this. So he says, “Just tell themyou can’t do it because you’re working withMichael Jackson. “I’m like, that’s not the way itgoes, c’mon. They are paying me to produce. Ican’t have them come up here and tell them onmy drive to New York that I can’t make it be-cause I’m working with Michael Jackson. I ap-

preciate the opportunity but I’m just gohave to decline tonight, I’m really sorry.”says, “That’s OK because I’m going to and so to do it.” And, I said, “You don’t htell me who you’re going to get Brad. Ymore than welcome to get somebody, of I feel terrible, because who wouldn’t wanon a Michael Jackson record. But whatsupposed to do, I have to have some integlife, and I can’t do that. He said, “OK, welgood luck, nice talking to you.” Well the he told me who he was going to call, I th

“If this is a specialized thing, he ain’t gonit from this guy. It will be impossible. Th

jingle guy. It’s not going to happen.” So anthe next day around noon the phone ringit’s Brad Buckner asking me when am I g

be available. So, I said, “I’m available. do anything until next Thursday. So he askto come in the next day. The night beforhave been a disaster because this guy just there. I brought some gear. I went into thdio, the Hit Factory. Every room was taMichael Jackson. The dressing room wawith jars and jars of candy, Haagen-Dcream. It was crazy. There were fifty syners in all the rooms. I set up my stuff to

and they played this tune for me, “TheyReally Care About Us.” They were havin

ble with the middle part, with the speed seing and all the ambiance they wanted aroMichael had said he wanted stuff that nhad ever heard before, “I’ve got to have thing that is just going to blow your mind

just started to slowly working in how I wa build it up – you’ve got to start builground work with synthesizers, what’s go

be on the top end, what’s going to be  bottom end, what’s your idea to doing whwant to do. I worked for about four houthe next thing I called upstairs and Braddownstairs, and they had these spinal ta

dium speakers up there that they craneleven. I left the room but it was really loI heard my stuff. I was like, Damn, I did

job. The next thing they call me in frolounge and said, “Jason, I think you gotthing here, man.” I was feeling the sameSo, I went into the lounge and I heard theing up Michael and, they told him it was “So then, a number of months later I went iHit Factor and I was working on Luthedross’ Christmas album and somebody me, “Jason Miles on Michael Jackson’s get down.” I asked what they were talkingand they said, “I was at the mix of ‘TheyCare About Us’” They were trying all theent people that they used on the song OK, of a sudden, Michael asked, “Who’s that?they tell him, “It’s Jason Miles.” And h“That’s good, I like that.” And, they endusing my stuff. And then a year later, I up my door downstairs, and there was a thI opened it up and it was a 10 Million pldisc that they sent me. I got it hanging up stairs. I’ve got a lot of them, and I’ve got athem that people owe me. Luther always sstuff. I keep the original ones that were j

platinum ones that means that I was on thwave.
