Meet Volunteer David Butter

David ButterFSU Community Ambassador

Why did you choose Second Harvest?I believe that food and water are basic physiological human needs, and without these needs fulfilled it is nearly impossible toaccomplish daily tasks, like running errands or studying. People inour community should not be held back because of an emptystomach or a lack of nutrients. The fight against hunger is anationwide issue we face today, and I'm proud to serve for anorganization that does such a great job in feeding our families.

How long have you been volunteering?Second Harvest has become my second home since I began volunteering for the food bank in2013. I first got involved through the Community Outreach Program at FSU, and once I becameacclimated to the agency I came up with new ways to help. Now I am serving the food bank astheir Community Ambassador, where I educate and recruit student groups to volunteer and join ourcause. How does food insecurity affect the student population?Food insecurity at the collegiate level is an invisible epidemic. Many assume that because astudent can afford to go to college that they have enough money for food, when in reality manystudents are choosing between lunch or textbooks. As much as PEL grants and loans from theUniversity help, college students are still amongst the hungriest of all Americans. Thankfully, FSUhas an on-campus food pantry that helps satisfy the needs of our Seminoles.

Thank you!

A special THANK YOU to some of our key donors of food, funds, and volunteer time during the month of September. We trulyappreciate your support.Woodmen Life Insurance Services, Chapter 2, Tallahassee delivered 366 pounds of non-perishable food raised at their Augustfood drive. They plan to have another drive in October! A specialthanks to Greg Ereckson and Garret Emerson (pictured here with JimCroteau) for presenting $1,000 to Second Harvest in September.

"Project 30" is a targeted program to raise critically needed funds to continue feeding seniors inour community. Big Bend businesses and faith-based congregations are being asked to raise$30,000 in 30 days for the Senior Grocery Program. Since Project 30 began on September 14,multiple organizations and churches have stepped forward to accept the challenge. Their generoussupport has allowed us to reach the halfway point of our goal, and the momentum continues! AARP and AARP Foundation contributed $12,000 to the Senior Grocery program. Through its 2014-2015 Swipe for Schools campaign, Envision Credit Union donated $10,000 tobenefit the Backpack Program.

FSU's Oscar Arias Sanchez Hispanic Honor Society visited ourwarehouse in September and boxed up nearly 3,500 pounds ofmeat. The G.O.B.O.T.'s Fighting Hunger Golf Tournament onSeptember 19 raised $2,000 to support Second Harvest'smission.

The Bradfordville Blues Club hosted an afternoon to dance to the tunes of the Shelter Band of TheKearney Center and participate in a Silent Auction, raising $827 on September 27. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at FSU held its Showcase of Classes on September 9 andattendees visited with OLLI Activity Chairs to learn more about the Institute's programs andservices and brought food donations for Second Harvest.
