History of Jharkhand

Geography

● Much of Jharkhand lies on the Chota Nagpur Plateau.

● Many rivers pass through the Chota Nagpur plateau. They are: Damodar,

North Koel, South Koel, Sankh, Brahmani and Subarnarekha rivers.

● Much of the Jharkhand state is still enclosed by forest. Forests sustain the

population of Elephants and tigers.

● It accounts for more than 40% of the mineral resources of India.

● Parasnath: Parasnath Hill is also recognised as Sri Sammed Sikharji.

● Netarhat: Netarhat is a town in Latehar district. Referred to as the "Queen of

Chotanagpur", it is a hill station.

● Rajmahal Hills: These hills are located in Sahibganj and Godda districts of

Eastern part of Jharkhand.

● Recently, Election Commission has announced the schedule of five-phase polls for 81 seats in

Jharkhand State Assembly.

3rd phase on 12th December.

● The fourth phase polling will be held on 16th and fifth phase polling on 20th of December.

● The counting of votes will be held on the 23rd of December.

General Facts

● Jharkhand suffers from what is sometimes termed a resource curse: it accounts for more than 40% of the

mineral resources of India, but 39.1% of its population is below the poverty line and 19.6% of children under

five years of age are malnourished.
