Boundaries

● The state shares its border with the states of Bihar to the north, Uttar

History of Jharkhand

● The region was ruled by many empires and dynasties

including Maurya, Gupta, Gauda, Pala, Nagvanshi,

Ramgarh Raj, Raksel and Chero.

Geography

● Much of Jharkhand lies on the Chota Nagpur Plateau.

● Many rivers pass through the Chota Nagpur plateau. They are: Damodar,

North Koel, South Koel, Sankh, Brahmani and Subarnarekha rivers.

● Much of the Jharkhand state is still enclosed by forest. Forests sustain the

population of Elephants and tigers.

● It accounts for more than 40% of the mineral resources of India.

● Parasnath: Parasnath Hill is also recognised as Sri Sammed Sikharji.

● Netarhat: Netarhat is a town in Latehar district. Referred to as the "Queen of

Chotanagpur", it is a hill station.

● Rajmahal Hills: These hills are located in Sahibganj and Godda districts of

Eastern part of Jharkhand.

● The Jharkhand Legislative Assembly election was held in five phases between November 25, and

December 20 2014.

● The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) won the elections defeating The Indian National Congress (INC)

and its major allies.

● This was the first time, since Jharkhand was created, for a single-party majority in the state

assembly.

● Recently, Election Commission has announced the schedule of five-phase polls for 81 seats in

Jharkhand State Assembly.

● The first phase of voting will be held on the 30th of November, the second phase on 7th December,

3rd phase on 12th December.

● The fourth phase polling will be held on 16th and fifth phase polling on 20th of December.

● The counting of votes will be held on the 23rd of December.

Major Dams

● Maithon Dam, Dhanbad: Maithon Dam is constructed on the Barakar river.

● Getalsud Dam, Ranchi: Getalsud Dam near Ranchi is constructed across

the Subarnarekha river.

● Konar Dam: Konar Dam across the Konar river is second multi purpose dam

of Damodar Valley Corporation

● Tilaiya Dam, Koderma: Tilaiya Dam is constructed across the Barakar river.

● Tenughat Dam, Bokaro: Tenughat Dam across the Damodar river in

Bokaro

● Panchet Dam: Panchet Dam across the Damodar river is also part of the

phase of the Damodar Valley Corporation.

General Facts

● Jharkhand suffers from what is sometimes termed a resource curse: it accounts for more than 40% of the

mineral resources of India, but 39.1% of its population is below the poverty line and 19.6% of children under

five years of age are malnourished.

● As per the 2011 census, Hinduism is the majority religion in the state at 67.8%, followed by Islam at 14.5%

and Christianity at 4.3%.

● Birsa Munda Airport (Ranchi) is the largest domestic airport in the state with air connectivity to major
